The Waterwraith is a returning boss appearing in Pikmin 2... Again?. It resembles its previous incarnations, resembling a featureless, transparent, and humanoid entity, its body made out of a water-like unknown substance, having two stone rollers. The Waterwraith appears in the similarly-named Flooded Castle. It'll not appear at first, however, after 3 minutes, more or less depending on the sublevel's size, a cutscene will play of two stone rollers falling from above, followed by the Waterwraith, which will smash the ground with its stone rollers. This cutscene plays only the first time the creature appears. The Waterwraith will ride throughout the sublevel, crushing any Pikmin and leaders it runs over, and even enemies will be instantly defeated from this. Collecting treasures in the Waterwraith's presence is dangerous, but the Waterwraith is inefficient at turning around, and so can usually only travel in one direction. Due to the cave not allowing Pikmin types not resistant to water, the Waterwraith becomes even more dangerous as it can not be harmed without the proper Pikmin. The only candypop buds present in the cave, allowing access to types other than Blue Pikmin, are Ivory and Glitter Candypop Buds. Even the Final Challenge, which Rock Pikmin and Purple Pikmin can be brought into, has a laser barrier that doesn't allow either type.
In the Flooded Castle's final sublevel, the track Rest plays, lulling the leaders into a false sense of security. There are three Violet Candypop Buds in the sublevel, and where the Purple Pikmin is discovered with, and in first place being needed to, but one is in the middle of the arena, unlike the two other Violet Candypop Buds. When close enough to the outlying candypop, the Waterwraith will appear. It passes over the Violet Candypop Bud, making it wilt and disappear. The fight then begins, and the Waterwraith will start by moving toward the Pikmin and leaders, boulders constantly falling. When a Purple Pikmin is thrown on the Waterwraith, or at least its shockwave hits the creature, it'll turn black like oil, a state in which all Pikmin are able to attack it. After shaking them off, it'll hit the ground with its stone rollers, creating a shockwave and causing many boulders to fall before it continues moving. Once enough damage is dealt, instead of it dying, its stone rollers will break, and it'll look frantically, realizing its stone rollers are gone. In its second phase, it becomes harmless, trying to flee. Once defeated, the Waterwraith disappear.

Phandy is the Waterwraith that appears in Pikmin: Antarctic Survival. Phandy is a child of the Plasm Wraith, and their parent does not appear in Antarctic Survival but is frequently mentioned nonetheless. Phandy is one of the wandering creatures of the Antarctic, and is uniquely able to be encountered as soon as day 2, though only in the form of brief sightings during exploration missions, which are initially just brushed off as some sort of mirages. After the Diamond Settlement residents catch a sighting of Phandy on three separate occasions, which is a rare event that can happen during a search mission, Phandy will then be found standing still and silently watching the search party. Phandy will remain motionless until the creatures of the party approach them, at which point they will turn and run away from the creatures and disappear into the Antarctic. Starting after this point, Phandy can be encountered in various locations throughout the Antarctic, which they will travel through in the same way as the other wandering creatures.
At no point while Phandy is a wandering creature will they ever be encountered with the Waterwraith's characteristic stone rollers. Instead, Phandy is always encountered on foot, and as such they have no way to cause any damage to other creatures, only being able to push others aside while moving. Phandy is able to use stone rollers, but in order for them to be given rollers, the rollers need to be constructed in the Diamond Settlement from a combination of raw material and some heavium as their core. Phandy cannot maintain a good grip on most physical objects due to their own multidimensional nature, as their body is entirely frictionless. As such, Phandy must make use of heavium's unique properties, as heavium is so dense that it transcends dimensions and thus allows Phandy and other Waterwraiths to hold onto it. Phandy is actually incredibly strong, with a carry strength of 40, and this strength is necessary in order for Phandy to move the incredibly heavy rollers around. It is important to keep in mind that if Phandy is currently on rollers, they cannot carry anything, due to the rollers requiring all of their strength to move. For this reason, Phandy should only join a search team geared up for combat when on rollers, to provide defense against hostile creatures.
Despite their lack of offensive capabilities prior to Awakening, Phandy is incredibly difficult to Awaken and recruit, due to their body being anchored in another dimension and rendering them immune to any harm. The only way to bring Phandy's body into this dimension and thus infuse them with Awakening Essence is via the use of gravitational waves. The main source of these gravitational waves is the shockwave produced by an Awakened Purple Pikmin, which is as always the primary means of handling a Waterwraith, but a gravitational burst created by Dr. Bruce is equally effective. Once Phandy is anchored via gravitational waves, they are quite easy to Awaken, as they have low health and no defense measures.
Once Phandy is Awakened, it becomes possible for them and the other Awakened creatures to understand each other, though it changes little else about Phandy's nature since as a wraith they are already sapient and quite intelligent. At this point, Phandy's personality and nature become clear. Phandy seems to actually be quite young, as Antarctic Survival lore follows the theory that Waterwraiths are a larval form of the Plasm Wraith. Phandy is curious, lively, and playful, though they can also become scared quite easily. Phandy misses their parent, the Plasm Wraith, very much, and often becomes homesick and wants to find their way back to their home and their parent again.
In an attempt to get back to their parent, if The Portal DLC pack is in use, Phandy will suggest that the creatures of the Diamond Settlement build the Portal structure there, hoping that they will be able to go through it and find their way back to their own world. Once the Portal building has been constructed, Phandy passes through it, only to find that it doesn't connect to the dimensional mainland that Phandy arrived through, but instead to the distant island of The Portal.
Phandy doesn't like Pikmin at all, thinking that they are gross and creepy-looking, and they are especially terrified of Purple Pikmin due to them being some of the few creatures that can actually hurt them. Phandy is observed to have something of a cruel side which mainly becomes visible when dealing with Pikmin, as they seem to enjoy frightening and chasing Pikmin, though Phandy's fear of Pikmin means that they are just as likely to end up being chased themself. Phandy tries to justify themself when called out on their cruelty toward Pikmin, saying that Pikmin are "yucky" and weird pests. Phandy eventually stops harassing and scaring the Awakened Pikmin of the Diamond Settlement, though they only stop because it upsets the other Diamond Settlement residents and makes the others mad at them.
As shown in the The Portal DLC pack, Phandy is absolutely terrified of Haunts, as even hearing the sounds of their groans and shrieks can cause Phandy to exhibit symptoms of post-traumatic stress.
Phandy mentions their past and how they ended up in the Antarctic soon after being Awakened. Apparently, Phandy lived with their parent for a long time, but the two of them ended up becoming separated across dimensions due to some sort of "dimensional anomaly". Phandy has always looked for their parent since the anomaly, but even after years has been unable to find the way back to their parent's dimension. Phandy explains that they ended up in the Antarctic when traveling between dimensions in search of their parent, only to accidentally become pulled into a bright white and highly unstable rift which dropped them off in the Antarctic. Since arriving in the Antarctic, Phandy's abilities to shift from one dimension to another have completely stopped working, leaving them stranded in the Antarctic despite their attempts to escape back into other universes. After this point, Phandy spent a while roaming the frozen wastes, trying to find a way out, and eventually stumbling across the group of Awakened creatures. Phandy could tell that there was something supernatural and abnormal about these creatures, and they even seemed to have some similar properties to supernatura, so Phandy started following the creatures around and constantly watching them from the distance, trying to figure out what was up with them and their strange properties. Despite their curiosity, Phandy was much too frightened of the Awakened creatures to investigate up close, which is why they only can be seen in the distance by the traveling search party, and flee out of view if the creatures ever approach them.
Phandy's description of a "bright and unstable rift" being the cause of their being taken to the Antarctic is the same story described by many other Awakened creatures of the Antarctic, such as Mamuselah, all of whom also describe similar bright white holes in reality which pulled them in and left them trapped in the Antarctic. This, combined with Phandy's claimed ability to create rifts between dimensions, leads several other residents of the Diamond Settlement to accuse Phandy of being the cause of the portals that have left everyone trapped there. Phandy vehemently denies these accusations, saying that they couldn't create rifts "like that", and they were just as confused about them as everyone else. Phandy states that their curiosity about the rift's strange and unstable nature led them to come closer to investigate the strange phenomenon, at which point Phandy became trapped in the rift's pull and was unable to escape as they were dragged into the Antarctic. Though Phandy is quite knowledgeable about dimensional travel, they are completely at a loss to explain the bright white rifts that all seem to lead to the Antarctic.
Phandy really likes candy and sweets, which likely relates to the high number of these sorts of treasures present in the Submerged Castle in p2. They also enjoy collecting "little discs" such as small lids and bottlecaps, and get upset if someone touches their collection of items without asking.
Phandy's personality and backstory shed some light on the origins and actions of the Waterwraiths and Plasm Wraith across the different Pikmin games, at least as these games play out in the Antarctic Survival timeline. Assuming that the Waterwraiths encountered in the Pikmin games are the same as Phandy, it seems that these creatures are all playful but destructive children, which are able to interact with the physical world through the pure heavium present in the cores of Waterwraith rollers, which they use to crush small creatures that get in their way or try to take their things. It is also possible that the Waterwraiths are looking for their parent, similar to how Phandy is in Antarctic Survival. This also explains the sudden cowardice of Waterwraiths upon loss of their rollers, as they are ultimately scared children who back down when faced with any real danger. Furthermore, this may shed light on the behaviors of the Plasm Wraith in p3. Seemingly, the creature displays parental instinct in its obsessive protection of Olimar, doting over him and attacking any creatures who try to take Olimar away from it. It seems that for whatever reason, Olimar reminds the Plasm Wraith of its lost children. As the Plasm Wraith has already been separated from all of its children due to the "dimensional anomaly", this explains why it is so protective of Olimar, being terrified of losing yet another child.
Crafting a pair of rollers for Phandy to use has a resource cost of twenty raw material and two heavium ingots, and can only be attempted by a creature with a build level of five or more. The base requirement to successfully create the rollers is a success tier of 25, but this goes down by two per build level, meaning that the actual success requirement is anywhere from five to fifteen. The rollers cannot regenerate HP or be healed, and if they are destroyed, a new pair of rollers needs to be constructed for Phandy.
Phandy's name is based on the word "phantom", which has a similar meaning to "wraith".

The Water Wraith is a supernatura appearing in Pikmin: Wide World. Encountered only underground in specific caves, the Water Wraith does not appear until five real-time minutes have elapsed since entering a sublevel, although it can appear sooner depending on the cave. Until it appears, the Water Wraith's periodic growls and roars reverberate faintly through the current sublevel and steadily become louder, clearer, and more frequent with time, with a distinct, eerie silence up to 30 seconds before it appears. As well, ghostly silhouettes of it will occasionally appear in the leaders' peripheral vision, disappearing when they turn to see more of it. When the time comes, a pair of stone rollers will suddenly fall side-by-side from above in a random location, the Water Wraith itself landing on and mounting them shortly thereafter. The Water Wraith will then lift up its front roller while roaring furiously, then forcefully slam it down before briefly looking around and grumbling. Notably, neither the Water Wraith nor its apparitions can be seen through the Hocopad's camera, and while the Dolphin Lander can sense the Water Wraith on her radar, she can not visually perceive it.
After its eventful entrance, the Water Wraith will begin aimlessly roaming the area by rotating its rollers akin to wheels on an automobile. It is completely ignorant of anything around it, not even going out of its way to target Pikmin or leaders, but will brutally crush or otherwise destroy almost anything it happens to slam its rollers on or roll over. Therefore, buried Pikmin, Rock Pikmin on soft surfaces, and airborne or completely buried enemies are exempt from the Water Wraith's reign of terror. However, it will simply pass through static objects, be they corpses, treasures, or even obstacles, in its path as if they didn't exist. Alert enemies in the Water Wraith's path will rapidly flee from it as it approaches. The Water Wraith will refuse to venture into passages that are too narrow for it to enter, as well as dead ends, instead preferring to always travel in a single direction unless it has sufficient room to turn around.
The Water Wraith is a medium-sized humanoid figure made entirely of what appears to be vaguely iridescent water, giving the creature its name. It has a round, featureless head and a plump midsection, and each of its four limbs has a rounded tip. Its arms are remarkably long, and its legs are comparatively short. The most signature component of its appearance, however, is the two large, cylindrical, stone rollers it rides on. These stone rollers typically herald the Water Wraith's imminent arrival, in both presence and sound.
Only one strategy is viable against the Water Wraith initially, and it is to flee. The Water Wraith is unique from every other enemy in that no attack will deter its advance, let alone harm it, until exposed to its sole weakness: Purple Pikmin, which are often unavailable to use against it at first, or at all in some cases. A Purple Pikmin pound directed anywhere near or even on the Water Wraith itself will cause it to turn purple and assume a fetal position while it begins quivering. In this state, it will be vulnerable to all Pikmin attacks as well as bomb rocks, rocks, and so on, which would otherwise bounce harmlessly off the creature with a distinct otherworldly drip sound, though it will regularly flail to keep Pikmin off of itself. No matter how many Purple Pikmin pounds the Water Wraith is subjected to, it will eventually break free with time and as it is hurt, necessitating pinning it down again. It shakes its attackers off immediately upon freeing itself, following up by performing a quick acceleration before returning to normal speed. Pikmin that are swarmed at it while it is vulnerable will instinctively climb or jump up on it to attack it rather than its rollers, and its rollers can not be damaged even by explosions. Despite its name, any Pikmin type can touch the Water Wraith without any danger of them drowning.
Once half of its health is depleted, the Water Wraith will cry out as its rollers abruptly crumble to dust, forcing the creature to travel on foot. Following this, the Water Wraith will scramble wildly to escape the leaders and Pikmin, waddling as fast as it can away from them. However, since its body is not made for this type of activity, it often trips, stumbles, or falls, and must stop to catch its breath after running for more than a few moments. Keep it pinned with Purple Pikmin pounds, but this time without fear of it being able to crush Pikmin. At this rate, the only harm it can do is harmlessly scattering them aside upon running into them. Upon death, the Water Wraith makes a scene as brief and grandiose as its entrance; still in a fetal position, it begins bubbling and foaming, groaning and murmuring all the while, for a few moments before it seems to shed its purple coating, its translucent body evaporating into nothingness in an upward direction while the bubbling purple skin seeps into the ground with a harsh gurgle, leaving behind nothing except any treasure it may have had.
In ultra-spicy difficulty, the sheer presence of the Water Wraith will make nearby Pikmin and leaders panic. As always, Purple Pikmin are not affected, and other Pikmin will not panic so long as the Water Wraith is in its vulnerable state. Additionally, the Water Wraith will produce several bubbles from its back whenever it shakes Pikmin off in its vulnerable state.

{{notes|image=PWW Captain Olimar icon.png|Olimar's comments|Contrary to popular scientific belief, the water wraith may not be a psychological phenomenon described as fear incarnate, but a lifeform with a physical form anchored in another dimension. The Waterwraith is a supernatural creature that has a humanoid shape and a translucent green-gray body. It is extremely dangerous, as it can instantly kill Pikmin by merely rolling over them, and can not be deterred or defeated until Purple Pikmin are used against it, as only they can stop it in its tracks and make it vulnerable to attack. Once it suffers enough damage, its rollers crumble and it runs about the area on foot, now harmless.

Notes
Olimar's observations
- “The Waterwraith. The monster that makes me more scared than any other beast. Even though it's easy to know when it is near, the feeling of knowing that it is near is unable to be described. What is this thing? Is it even from this planet? Is it from any planet? Does it even exist? Is it all a figment of our imagination? No, surely not...”
Cookin' with Louie
- “Inedible. Known to cause mass hysteria, followed by leg spasms and internal thunderings.”

In Pikmin: The After Years, the Waterwraith is much stronger and appears alongside the Firewraith, Electrowraith, and Magneticwraith, and the newly-discovered Acidwraith and Clambering Wraith.
The Waterwraith also has a dark matter-infused variant, which is known as the "Dark Waterwraith". The Dark Waterwraith appears only in the Galactic Warpzone, the final cave, and it is a much stronger version of the Waterwraith that has much more health, faster and deadlier attacks, and the ability to use a new, unique attack in addition to its existing ones.
In Pikmin: Antarctic Survival
This article or section presents information pertaining to Pikmin: Antarctic Survival, a fanon game created by A Friendly Amprat. |
Phandy seems to actually be quite young, as Antarctic Survival's lore follows the theory that Waterwraiths are a larval form of the Plasm Wraith.
Phandy really likes candy and sweets, which likely relates to the high number of these sorts of treasures present in the Submerged Castle in Pikmin 2.
Furthermore, this may shed light on the behaviors of the Plasm Wraith in Pikmin 3.

Notes
Sagittarius' notes
- “This creature's horrific, ghostly visage and stone rollers mean it should probably be kept as far from civilization as possible.”
Libra's notes
- “This being is so evil, it doesn't even have the courtesy to leave behind anything to make clothes out of. Then again, I'm not sure I want anyone to wear... whatever this thing is made of.”
Charlie's notes
- “Only Purple Pikmin seem to be able to pierce this beast's otherworldly defenses. Throw one and the wraith will be left cowering in this dimension and vulnerable to other attackers. If all else fails, don't be afraid to run. I fear no monster, but this... thing... it scares me.”
Derrick's notes
- “Draw a teardrop in a circle onto the ground, and place a basin of fine brass in the center of the rounded part of the teardrop. Fill the basin to the brim with water, taking care not to let any spill just yet. Now, you must find a sacrifice, an animal or person with a pure heart or an innocent mind. Take them to the basin and drown them in it, keeping their face submerged until their skin grows cold, all the while chanting the ancient words of Lord Plasm. If done correctly, a Waterwraith should take its form from the spilled water, ready to wreak havoc on the world. Furnish it with weapons and equipment of your choice; I prefer the classic rollers carved from dense mountain rock.”

Notes
- Data file #1 (all difficulties): Don't spend too long in the Water Wraith's territory. Hurry along as often as possible.
- Data file #2 (all difficulties): Stay out of the Water Wraith's way. It often makes examples of oblivious creatures.
- Data file #3 (all difficulties): Until you find its weakness, focus on where the Water Wraith is rather than how to attack it.
- Data file #4 (all difficulties): Purple Pikmin pounds will temporarily make the Water Wraith vulnerable to all attacks.
- Data file #5 (all difficulties): When the Water Wraith loses its only means of offense, it will try its best to get away.
- Data file #6 (ultra-spicy difficulty only): The Water Wraith is a terrifying beast. It will scare all nearby Pikmin and leaders into a panic.
- Data file #7 (ultra-spicy difficulty only): Be careful to not let Pikmin be trapped in the bubbles the Water Wraith makes while defending itself.
Olimar's comments
- “Contrary to popular scientific belief, the water wraith may not be a psychological phenomenon described as fear incarnate, but a lifeform with a physical form anchored in another dimension. How this is possible is left unexplained, as no theories have emerged to support it. It has a remarkable reaction to shockwaves, the exposure to which forces it into a prone state. Another hypothesis is that the water wraith is merely an illusion representing a life form none other can perceive.”
Shacho's comments
- “My poor old heart can only handle so much pressure... When I see this... this... thing, I start to sweat profusely and my heart starts to race. It's like the rush I get when I strike it rich at the casino! Except, the other way around.”
Marie's comments
- “No.”
Louie's comments
- “Inedible. Consumption results in an i\ nde ind- - indisin de-^v- ini--n---^\__”
Dolphin Lander's comments
- “I'm not sure if it's because I can't see it, or because my artificial emotions are limited, but I sure feel like I'm out of the loop here! The crew seems so afraid of whatever this "bottle brace" or "sodder taste" is, and here I am. Well, maybe I should be glad I am the way I am. Addendum: the crew had to keep Louie restrained for a few hours until he settled down; remind Louie to think before eating everything he comes across.”
