Scientific name Parasitus pseudofungi elasticis hostus
Family Breadbug (unofficial)

The Dwarf Moldy Bulborb is a dwarf bulborb under the control of a parasitic Toxstool. It acts much like a typical dwarf bulborb but differs as it is abnormally aggressive, and passively expels poisonous gas from its back, posing a threat to all but White Pikmin. Additionally, landing a Pikmin on its back won't instantly kill it. only stagger it, inflict a bit of damage, and cause it to spew toxic spores. If killed, they can be revived by the Toxstool.

The Dwarf Moldy Bulborb is an unfortunate grub-dog in Pikmin Evolution infected by a parasitic mold originating from a sporovid. It appears slightly different, taking on a more sickly gray tint to match the grayish-blue color of mold. They retain the behaviors of their non-infected members, attempting to eat anything that enters their territory. However, it is noticeably more aggressive than its non-infected members, being more alert to anything in its range. The Dwarf Moldy Bulborb is also more ravenous, eating faster than the other types of dwarf bulborbs. However, this is all caused by the clump of mold on its back, which has taken the Dwarf Moldy Bulborb's body over and is now controlling it. The mold releases a poison gas when directly struck, meaning only Roach Pikmin can attack that part of its body. The rest of its body is vulnerable to other Pikmin, though its increased appetite may prove dangerous to them. The mold on its back gives it mild protection from Pikmin landing on top of it, though not much, as only around three thrown Roach Pikmin can get the job done. One new characteristic of the Dwarf Moldy Bulborb is that, after some time, the mold on its back may burst open, killing the host and causing them to disintegrate, but revealing a Toxcap, which can spread even more mold around the local area. Killing Moldy Dwarf Bulborbs is a top priority for maintaining balance in the ecosystem. One way to help deal with Dwarf Moldy Bulborbs is to splash water on it, washing the mold off and leaving the Dwarf Moldy Bulborb in a very weakened state. However, acid instantly kills any Dwarf Moldy Bulborb on contact, making it the best way to deal with those creatures. The creature is a minor nuisance overall, but one that can quickly soil an environment if left to its own devices.

The Dwarf Moldy Bulborb appears in Pikmin: Interstellar Cryptid. It looks like most standard Dwarf Bulborbs but is a sickly turquoise color and has a clump of Toxstool mold on its back. It acts like other breadbug mimics, but periodically releases poison from the mold clump on its back. It can also resist direct throws to its back due to the fortified clump on its back.

Notes

Olimar's notes

This unfortunate juvenile grub-dog has become an unwitting host to a fungiculture of toxstool spores. Although still technically "living", the bulborb might not even be alive at this point. The clump of developing toxstool mold will slowly sap the life from its host until it perishes from the lack of nutrients. Even after this point, the hyphae of the fungus is still capable of moving the muscles of the host after their death, leaving it nothing more than a mindless, nutrient-seeking automaton controlled by the fungal host.

Louie's notes

Against all odds, this morsel just so happens to be fresh! Clean it of its mold and prepare a steak from it, as the meat tastes as if it were dry-aged. The flavor is most prevalent if eaten right before spoilage.

Bentley's notes

Whenever I'm fighting one of these saps, I feel as if I'm fighting the fungus itself, rather than the host. It's as if we're trying to save them even! Unfortunately, all specimens die after I have a go at them, so I guess I'm not a hero after all...

Eloise's notes

I wish the fungus could just be friends with this tot; they could do so much good together if they just joined forces. Oh well...
