The Tough-legged Kettlebug is a larger relative of the Antenna Beetle in Pikmin X: Deep Freeze. It is native to the Vengeful Thicket and is so named for its bulky limbs which allow it to balance unharmed on the thick bramble patches bordering many pathways in the region. While this enemy is incapable of harming Pikmin on its own, it will sound a whistle in front of itself when they approach, hypnotizing Pikmin into following it. Since the Tough-legged Kettlebug always stands atop brambles, this invariably leads the Pikmin to walk right into the thorny plants and end up stunned and at the mercy of more dangerous enemies. This creature will also occasionally leap from one spot to another to avoid Pikmin; generally, this is atop brambles on the other side of the path. Beating this enemy is actually rather simple; just watch its movements and wait for it to stop whistling, then toss Pikmin onto it to force it onto the ground.

This bug's legs look strong... perhaps we should aim somewhere else? – The ship, upon discovering the Tough-Legged Kettlebug

The Tough-Legged Kettlebug is a new enemy that appears in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The enemy can mainly be found inside caves, rarely showing itself above ground. The creature takes on the physical stature of most Kettlebugs, like the Antenna Beetle, and has a tough, red abdomen with points on several ends of it. Attached to the front is an elongated, red head with beady, violet eyes and a pale mouth. The creature also has light pink wings on its back and two long, maroon antennae. The most notable feature of this creature is its massive, bi-clawed legs attached to their bodies. These legs are covered in extremely thick armor.

The Tough-Legged Kettlebug will periodically fall from above, smashing into the ground with an audible thump. This thump may awaken any nearby sleeping creatures, like Bulborbs, if the creature is close enough to them. Once the creature lands, it will skitter around slowly, unlike the extremely fast speed of the Antenna Beetle. If the Kettlebug spots Pikmin, it will charge over to them, suddenly launching towards them with a violent kick. This kick will cause the beetle to fall flat on its face, and any Pikmin hit by the attack to be sent flying back. The kick has a chance to kill Pikmin, but it mainly depetals them. After this attack has been performed, the creature will scramble to its feet and jump back into the air, falling back down after a bit to repeat the process.

Attacking a Tough-Legged Kettlebug can be tricky due to its legs. Most Pikmin that attack the creature will swarm its legs, but due to its armor, the creature will take very little damage. The only way to do sizable damage is by throwing Pikmin onto its abdomen or head. Rock Pikmin and Purple Pikmin are highly recommended, as they deliver an extreme impact when thrown. Using a bomb rock can work, but it doesn’t kill the Kettlebug instantly.

In Overlord mode, the Tough-Legged Kettlebug has much more health. Along with this, the creature gains the ability to hypnotize Pikmin like an Antenna Beetle, along with its kicking attack, which it will execute on those Pikmin.

Notes

  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #1: The Tough-Legged Kettlebug’s legs are dangerous and tough... aim somewhere else to do maximum damage.
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #2 (Overlord mode): The Tough-Legged Kettlebug has not lost the ability to hypnotize Pikmin!

Olimar's notes

Although the creature still has the ability to hypnotize its attackers, the Kettlebug will hunt for insects and other creatures by kicking them with its extremely dense legs. These legs have become so strong due to the Kettlebug's strange, regenerative properties. After sustaining a major injury, the Tough-Legged Kettlebug will end up healing a day later, growing dozens of layers of chitin over its wounds. Since most attackers aim for its legs... well, you get the point.

Louie's notes

Make sure to remove the tough and chewy legs. That way, you can enjoy your skewered and broiled bug in peace!

President’s notes

This species of insect has massive regenerative properties...! Maybe I’ll turn this compound into a hair cream... and maybe...

Overlord’s thoughts

Hey, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. No wonder these species managed to survive for so long; every time you beat them down, they keep getting back up!
