Attacks Eats Pikmin

The Sleepy Bulbear is a particularly lethargic bulbear appearing in Pikmin: Wide World. Exclusive to Arid Oasis and its caves, the Sleepy Bulbear is a close relative of the Spotty Bulbear, though no dwarf counterpart of it is encountered. Sleepy Bulbears, needless to say, sleep, on land, alone or with another Sleepy Bulbear, sometimes accompanied by Dwarf Spotty Bulbears. They awaken upon being touched or injured, or hearing a sound loud enough to rouse them from slumber. While awake, it will chase down any leaders and Pikmin in its territory to eat them. Unlike other bulbears, which fling Pikmin into the air before gobbling them up, the Sleepy Bulbear eats Pikmin much like a bulborb would. Any leader a Sleepy Bulbear bites down on will be chewed up, and then spat out alongside any Pikmin in the creature's mouth at the time. Once alone, the Sleepy Bulbear will seek a spot near its original resting position to resume its slumber there.

Sleepy Bulbears strongly resemble Spotty Bulbears in appearance. However, they differ slightly in that they have lighter skin, pinker lips, and most notably, bloodshot eyes and red irises. Otherwise, they retain the typical features of a wide, stocky figure, pronounced lips and nostrils, a black, red-spotted backside, and black, clawed feet.

Not much strategy goes into defeating a Sleepy Bulbear since its behaviors are so basic. With a sizeable group of Pikmin, simply sneak up behind it as it slumbers and then charge them into its backside. This technique often critically wounds a Sleepy Bulbear, if not outright kill it, before it can retaliate. If caught off-guard and a head-on conflict happens, throwing Pikmin at its eyes will inflict minor damage, make it flinch, and cause it to release any Pikmin in its mouth. Upon defeat, a Sleepy Bulbear will cry out and fall forward, dead.

In ultra-spicy difficulty, the Sleepy Bulbear can incite nearby Dwarf Spotty Bulbears to attack Pikmin and leaders when awake. Additionally, after biting Pikmin and leaders, it will bite again immediately after to catch more of them in its mouth if more remain in front of it.

Notes

  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #1 (all difficulties): Because of its above-average vitality, a Sleepy Bulbear should only be disturbed if absolutely necessary.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #2 (ultra-spicy difficulty only): The Sleepy Bulbear can sic Dwarf Bulbears on prey while awake, and will take another bite if it can while attacking.

Olimar's comments

PWW Captain Olimar icon.png The sleepy bulbear is a species of bulbear I discovered during my initial visit to PNF-404 and have not encountered since. It sleeps peacefully until disturbed, where it relentlessly chases down and devours whatever poor creature woke it up. The fact that this species of bulbear has reemerged is a thrilling discovery, and I'm happy to see its return!

Shacho's comments

PWW President icon.png Some nights my eyes are as bloodshot as this beast's. Being the company president of Hocotate Freight isn't all it's cracked up to be, especially when it's undergone as many debts as it has...

Marie's comments

PWW Marie icon.png Although it may appear to be ill at first glance, the sleepy bulbear naturally appears the way it does, so there's no need to worry about scheduling veterinarian appointments! At least, not unless it actually is sick. Whether its eyes are colored the way they are is natural or a result of a lack of sleep is beyond me... Maybe I'll have to ask Olimar about it sometime. Sleepy bulbears are arguably the friendliest bulbear species to have, and any owner who is experienced in taking care of bulborbs will be quite comfortable having one of these as a pet.

Louie's comments

PWW Louie icon.png A higher fat concentration is present in the creature, requiring cutting out more of it to reach the delectable meat. The meat is soft and, if cooked perfectly, falls right off the bone! Be sure to save the bones to make a wonderful stock to make soups with!

Dolphin Lander's comments

PWW Dolphin Lander icon.png As ferocious as I've known bulbears to be, this one seems quite lax. That said, however, it's still very unforgiving when someone or something disturbs it from its slumber.
