Purple Pikmin are a type of Pikmin whose most noteworthy characteristics are their incredible weight and carrying strength, ten times those of other Pikmin. They are also slower than average-size Pikmin and have a unique way of attacking enemies through a pound. Their defining physical characteristics are their purple color, as the name would imply, as well as their bulbous physique when compared to other Pikmin, and their magenta buds and flowers, in addition to the straight trichomes atop their heads.

Purple Pikmin are a returning Pikmin appearing in Pikmin 2... Again?. They are first discovered in the Flooded Castle. The Purple Pikmin is a fat, purple Pikmin, wider than most others and having six hair-like trichomes. Purple Pikmin are ten times heavier and stronger than the average Pikmin types, allowing even a single Purple Pikmin to carry a Red Bulborb corpse. However, due to their weight, Purple Pikmin are slower and are thrown in a low arc. They inflict 20 damage with each strike of their stem, the highest damage of all Pikmin if not for the Rock Pikmin's and Dart Pikmin's unique attacks. When thrown to its maximum distance, a Purple Pikmin will perform a pound, which, upon collision with the ground, will cause a shockwave around it. The shockwave will damage enemies it hits, though not nearly as much as a stem strike would, but can affect multiple enemies in range of the pound. Additionally, enemies in the pound's range can be briefly stunned, as indicated by them bouncing up a short distance and halting their movement for a few precious moments. Additionally, Purple Pikmin are needed to defeat the Waterwraith, as the pound turns the Waterwraith black like oil, a state in which it is vulnerable to attack. According to the explorer files, Purple Pikmin are fearless, and indeed they are, being resistant to panic. Their particular resistance and pound ability make them effective against Mitites, which cause Pikmin around them to panic, as a Purple Pikmin's pound alone is sufficient to kill the small creatures. Purple Pikmin are also resistant to wind, their heavy weight preventing it from pushing them around or down, although they can still be affected by the depetaling breath of a Withering Blowhog and freezing effect of the Frosthop Blowhog. The Purple Pikmin's previous resistance to knockback is instead possessed by the Slime Pikmin.

A Purple Pikmin's pound not only stuns enemies but can also break up loose ground, revealing shortcuts or helping dig through mounds of dirt.

In Pikmin Kart, Purple Pikmin are items that are uncommonly found from item boxes and have a short throw range. After being thrown or dropped somewhere onto the course, Purple Pikmin latch onto the first kart they can get close enough to, slowing the kart far more than other Pikmin items for as long as they hang on. Additionally, upon landing from being thrown or latching onto a kart, a Purple Pikmin produces a shockwave that spins out any kart in its wide circular range. Swerving the kart forces the Purple Pikmin off, and doing so is usually easy because they can not hang on for long. As with all Pikmin items, the Whistle item not only protects a kart from Pikmin attacks but also allows the Whistle's user to take a Pikmin item for themselves to use.

Purple Pikmin appear in Pikmin V's Story Mode and also have an Onion; in fact, a Violet Candypop Bud turns into a Purple Onion right in front of the leaders in the entrance to Sealed Valley, where they are found. It has regained most of its abilities from Pikmin 2, though they are reduced in power. It will only perform a ground pound if it's high enough above the ground after a certain time; changes in throwing physics meaning it will fail that condition at roughly half of its throw range, which is reduced overall and follows the same arc as other types rather than a diagonal line. The ground pound does not deal extra damage, nor does it produce a shockwave that allows it to hit anything but a target underneath. The base stun time has been reduced from five seconds to one, and it scales based entirely on size: small enemies like Ravenous Whiskerpillars may be stunned for up to two seconds, but big enemies and every boss will be immune. Additionally, is no longer immune to getting knocked down by strong winds (but still won't be pushed away), and it regains its immunity to fear induced by attacks like the Emperor Bulblax's roar. Aesthetically, it has a much deeper voice than even Pikmin 4's, and its limbs have been enlarged.

Rare Purple Pikmin, also called Light Purple Pikmin, are a rare variation of Purple Pikmin appearing in Pikmin: A New Journey. They have a minimal chance of being ejected from a Violet Candypop Bud when Pikmin are thrown in, but Blue Pikmin that are thrown in have a slightly higher chance of becoming a Rare Purple Pikmin. These Pikmin are a lighter shade of purple than ordinary Purple Pikmin and have red petals, and are one of few species of Pikmin to have wings. This allows them to have fantastic mobility and throw length, but an average throw height. They also have cat-like ears, and as such, can hear approaching enemies, and will warn of their presence by making a meow-like noise.

Notes

Olimar's note

What? That's not an ordinary Purple Pikmin. It appears to have wings. I should use this to my advantage.

Purple Pikmin, in certain circumstances, can also pound on and demolish reinforced gates, specifically the one in the Hidden Territory, which guards the Bulbmin and their respective Onion. Thus, Bulbmin can not be obtained until after Purple Pikmin are.

Once Olimar collects the Warsong, he can spark fury within his Pikmin to double their strength and speed, making Purple Pikmin viable for killing larger, stronger enemies and bosses efficiently. Before the boss battle with Possessed Lord Bowser in the Mushroom World, Louie plants two fast-growing violet Queen Candypop Buds for Olimar and does so for the duration of the battle as the boss can only be harmed by either Purple Pikmin, or Red Pikmin with Prometheus' Gift. With the Hulker Bulker, Purple Pikmin are a clear choice for the grueling end-of-world bosses.

Purple Pikmin are the last type of Pikmin encountered in Pikmin: Return to the Distant Planet, being found at the Giant's Workshop. These Pikmin have three hair-like trichomes on either side of their stem and are much larger and bulkier than other types of Pikmin. They have a much stronger attack power, dealing more damage to enemies per hit, but their attacks take longer to wind up. Their weight can also be used to weigh down enemies and obstacles more effectively. Although they're the slowest Pikmin type even at flower-stage maturity, they're also the strongest physically, being able to pick up ten times their own body weight. Purple Pikmin are extremely useful when carrying objects, especially when used in conjunction with White Pikmin, since Purple Pikmin can't slow down a haul but White Pikmin can speed one up. Purple Pikmin also can not be pushed or knocked down by wind or have panic-inducing fear instilled in them by intimidation such as that caused by enemy roars. The Purple Onion consumes more energy in creating them, only ejecting around half as many seeds compared to other Onions.

In Pikmin: Treasure Colonization, Purple Pikmin are the fifth Pikmin type discovered and have pink petals. Their superior strength and weight greatly reduce the range of their throw arc, making them the least useful in collecting treasures perched on ledges unless there is a more direct route to them. Their latch-on attack's damage output is only just above average, but the thud they make upon landing deals a good amount of damage and has a low chance of stunning enemies for two to three real-world seconds. Purple Pikmin have a height of thirty-three millimeters, and a carrying capacity of twenty while under the effects of ultra-sour spray.

Notes

Olimar's notes

One of the two Pikmin types that I discovered underground. Their strength is 10 times more than other types. The downside to them is their sluggish movement and their weight working against them while being thrown. I'm still in wonder if their onion exists, or if the violet candypop bud is a mutation of the other candypop buds, evolved to live underground...

Tang's notes

When I was first introduced to this Pikmin species, I was in awe of such a species existing. It is perfect for combat, and when backing it up with Red Pikmin and Rock Pikmin you have an amazing combination storm of damage!

Robin's notes

Quite sluggish, yet its carrying strength is astonishing. It's weird to think that these Pikmin don't have an Onion, however. I started working on a contraption that will connect to the ship itself and can hold onto these lil' guys to make it more comfortable for them.

Purple Pikmin are the third and final main Pikmin species discovered at Ancient Metalworks, specifically in the Hidden Scrapyard, in Pikmin: Wide World. They are resistant to panic and wind, and have the strength of ten Pikmin. They have an above-average attack power, low mobility, low throw range, and average digging speed. They are by far the slowest Pikmin, even at flower maturity. The defining features of a Purple Pikmin are its larger frame, six hairs on its head, and pink petals. The voice of a Purple Pikmin is deeper and more masculine than that of other Pikmin. Purple Pikmin initially can only be made by throwing other Pikmin into a Violet Candypop, the method by which they are first discovered. Their Onion is located by Marie's crash site in Ancient Metalworks, but they can be stored in the PikHold until it is found. Purple Pikmin are one of the two most damaging Pikmin types, the other being Rock Pikmin.

When landing from a throw, a Purple Pikmin will pound onto the ground or anything under it with all its weight. Purple Pikmin pounds have a variety of offensive and destructive uses, including briefly stunning most nearby enemies. When able to pound an enemy, Purple Pikmin can cause extreme damage to it even if they do not stun it. Some obstacles can only be cleared by the weight and strength of a Purple Pikmin, but they can be equally useful in clearing other obstacles they aren't required for.

Olimar's comments

PWW Captain Olimar icon.png The bulky purple pikmin may be slow, but what it lacks in speed it makes up for in strength. When landing from a throw or a high ledge, the purple pikmin can intelligently use its weight to gain the upper hand against its foes, and can often handle the heavy remains all by itself.
