The Fungal Bloyster is a species of mollusking appearing in Pikmin Evolution. It is a bloyster that has formed a symbiotic relationship with the mold produced by members of the sporovid family, and coincidentally has a color scheme reminiscent of the Puffstool's, having a red body, and a yellow bulb-like tail resembling a mushroom cap. The bloyster is able to survive outside of moist locations due to the mold, and the mold has gained a resistance to water, its usual weakness. The Fungal Bloyster dwells in dry areas, using its fungal abilities to spit balls of spores that cause mold to grow where they land and convert Pikmin into Puffmin. Immediately upon transformation, the Puffmin will swarm the Fungal Bloyster and act as a barrier for it, the Puffmin also gathering nearby corpses for it to eat.

When attacked directly, the Fungal Bloyster will attack with its tentacle-filled mouth to eat up to a dozen Pikmin at a time and release a moldy green ink, poisoning anything that inhales its fumes and leaving behind a residue of sticky mold as well. The Fungal Bloyster can also shake poison dust off of its tail when attacked. Any Puffmin surrounding the Fungal Bloyster will only help defend it by swarming and attacking leaders and healthy Pikmin. Due to the sheer amount of contaminants involved, Roach Pikmin are the best Pikmin type to defeat the creature as their immunity to poison and spores will make the Fungal Bloyster as threatening as the Toady Bloyster. However, starting once it reaches half-health, the Fungal Bloyster may roar, sending Pikmin into a panic, and release a purple ink that creates Puffmin without needing to convert healthy Pikmin, making it more dangerous to a squad of Roach Pikmin. However, the hybrid nature of the Fungal Bloyster may prove to be its undoing with its weakness to cold; the fact that one creature is aquatic and one hydrophobic means freezing them together will cripple both. By using a cyan syrup, the Fungal Bloyster will shrivel to half its usual size, making it slower and weaker as well as unable to use spores and poison, only mold. Afterward, beat on it until it dies, helpless to do anything without help from the mold.

Attacks Eats Pikmin, generates mold

The Fungal Bloyster is a species of mollusking in Pikmin: Other Frontier. They are recognizable for their pale orange-colored skin and brown, almost wilted-looking, gill bulb. It passively emits a cloud of orange vapor, signifying that it carries toxic matter. Fungal Bloysters attack in the same way as regular Toady Bloysters, by thrusting a multipronged tongue to ensnare Pikmin; however, they also secrete a moldy mucus that contaminates any moisture it touches and converts it to mold. This is best exemplified in the Rust Labyrinth, where a Fungal Bloyster's contaminated mucus causes the entrance to a cave to be blocked with toxic mold. This can happen in caves as well but in limited areas. As Fungal Bloysters regularly release mold in an unavoidable territory, only Cleaner Pikmin can defeat them.

Notes

Olimar's notes

This member of the mollusking family regularly ingests toxic matter so they can secret carcinogenic mucus from their bodies, giving them a natural territory and allowing for easy eating of prey.

Louie's notes

As long as the bulb-like protrusion is fresh, it can make for a richly flavored meat roast for one, otherwise highly inedible.
