Dark Olimar appears as an important boss in Pikmin 3: The Dweevil's Revenge. It may only be fought after a grueling battle against the Greater Bulblax and the Shadow, and although the cave it is in may be exited afterward, Dark Olimar's defeat results in the completion of the main story. It resembles a black silhouette of Captain Olimar shrouded completely in darkness, and it has gleaming yellow eyes and gray hair. What appears to be its suit has gray gloves and accents, and on its front is a red symbol that resembles fire.

Dark Olimar is encountered in an expansive, barren, circular chamber. Upon entering it, Dark Olimar blows Louie away, knocking him unconscious, unreachable, and unusable until the end of the battle. Dark Olimar will then rise out of Olimar's shadow alongside a number of Darkmin mirroring the amount of each of the Pikmin Olimar has with him at the moment. Dark Olimar takes damage in the same way as other enemies do, meaning no special means of killing it is necessary. It has an incredibly large health pool and can deliver very high-damaging punches that can only kill one Pikmin at a time, resulting in the deaths of its own Pikmin in the process. Dark Olimar also has the ability to summon Darklings, which are merely a distraction. When Dark Olimar is defeated, it bursts in harmless flames and becomes a harmless pile of ash that soon blows away in the wind afterward, also dropping the Universal Communicator and the Shadow Keeper.

Dark Olimar is an important boss character appearing in Pikmin: The After Years. After Captain Olimar and his wife landed on the Planet of the Pikmin, they noticed that it had become a barren wasteland, and so they went on a mission to stop the cause of the cause on the planet. After defeating the Bloodbath, Olimar noticed some dark matter had gotten onto his favorite suit. He gently wiped it off and exited the cave. However, soon afterward, the dark matter soon transformed into Dark Olimar, using some of the captain's genetic coding to assume his form. It is completely shrouded in shadows except for his two gleaming eyes and the outline of his nose. Dark Olimar also has claws instead of fingers and its helmet light is purple. Dark Olimar began to stalk the captain and his wife, usually hiding out of view. Dark Olimar told Olimar in his dreams that he is too late to stop the destruction and to turn back or else consequences will be measured.

Dark Olimar mirrors Olimar's movements and has Darkmin at its disposal. It attacks the same way Olimar does, except it throws Pikmin much faster and runs quicker. The only way to hurt Dark Olimar is by luring it into its own attacks, which may be accomplished by getting a running start and throwing a Pikmin. This will cause Dark Olimar to throw one of its Darkmin while running forward, and with luck its Darkmin will land directly on top of it, inflicting damage. Since Dark Olimar runs slightly faster than Olimar, this could be hard to accomplish. Dark Olimar doesn't have much health, but ridding of it can be a chore. White Darkmin cause the least amount of damage while Purple Darkmin cause the most.
