The Tantalizing Flatfrog is an enemy that appears in the Pikmin: Interstellar Cryptid DLC, Operation: Rubber Ducky Overboard. It resembles a brown toad with numerous grey streaks running down its body. It has black eyes with red pupils. It clings to walls in dark areas, perfectly blending in with the trees of the Undergrowth Crossroads it is endemic to. When approached, its body will glow blue with numerous pink, neuron-shaped patterns that flow across its body. It will also make a buzzing drone noise akin to an electronically distorted sitar sound. The Pikmin will be entranced by it and approach the frog, causing it to reveal its long, faint purple tongue and ensnare all the Pikmin to eat. The Pikmin can be whistled to save them from the frog. It can only display its tantalizing colors for a measly three seconds, turning off afterward. Olimar states in his notes that this may be to prevent unwanted attention from predator species.

Notes

Olimar's notes

A creature that straddles the line between camouflage and angler tendencies, the tantalizing flatfrog lives on the lower levels of the rainforest floor. Clasping onto trees, the pigmentation of its skin has the uncanny ability to display patterns, colors, and even lights that prove to be hypnotic to small insects. I'll admit to finding it quite pretty as well, but not to the point of hypnotic allure. The amphibian appears to only activate this strategy for seconds at a time so as to not catch the attention of predator species.

Louie's notes

Cut the body into pieces just small enough for a frying pan, bread resulting morsels, fill pan with corn oil, and fry until batter turns a dark drown. Serve with a selection of sauces and some broccoli quinoa on the side.

Alph's comments

Structural flaw: low defense
Weight: 9

The intricate patterns it displays to ensnare prey almost look as if they were designed by a digital animator, compared to the, well, comparatively mundane displays of creatures like cuttlefish and chameleons. If we could find out how to apply those projections onto spacecraft... I actually don't know how it could be useful.

Brittany's comments

It just looks so pretty! Well, unless it isn't trying to kill you... it's rather ugly otherwise. I wish it could display these colors outside of the darkness, but no.

Charlie's comments

In the veil of darkness, do not approach any conspicuous trees you see. It could be entirely possible this fiend is in wait, and it can pick off your platoon at a moment's notice.
