The Sandworm appears in Pikmin 3: The Progg Wars, much resembling its Pikmin: The After Years incarnation, although as a robot rather than a living organism. Its fuel source is nectar, which it repeatedly drinks from the flowers in its territory and spits at Pikmin and leaders to smother them in it. Destroying the flowers leaves the Sandworm without fuel, eventually forcing it to shut down.

In Pikmin 4 (BallsAngus version), the Sandworm is never encountered, only mentioned for Olimar's notes on the Acidic Drenchworm. However, its scientific name, Skolex amathos, and family, drenchworm are mentioned.

The Sandworm appears in Pikmin: The After Years, where it is fought first on the final sublevel of the Carnivorous Cave and later again in the Remembrance Ravine. It is a giant beige worm that has glaring red eyes and sharp bloodstained teeth and is about twice the size of the Emperor Bulblax fought in Pikmin 1. The Sandworm regularly feeds on other creatures, typically Coconut Jellyfloats.
Upon first encountering the Sandworm, the ship warns the leaders that the beast, preferring meat over plant matter, will eat them rather than Pikmin unless it must. It attacks by lunging out of the ground at leaders in an attempt to eat or crush them, but no matter whether or not it misses, it burrows underground to try again. Contrary to the appearance of its skin, the Sandworm can be harmed only by attacking its tongue, which is possible after tricking the creature into eating a bomb rock, which there are plenty of nearby. Doing so causes it to fall to the ground, dazed, with its tongue sticking out of its mouth. Once it recovers, the Sandworm pulls its tongue back into its mouth, eating any Pikmin still latched on at the time, and returns to its usual behaviors. Upon death, the Sandworm explodes gruesomely, leaving only its head to be carried back to the Research Pod.
The Sandworm also has a dark matter-infused variant, which is known as the "Dark Sandworm". The Dark Sandworm appears only in the Galactic Warpzone, the final cave, and it is a much stronger version of the Sandworm that has much more health, faster and deadlier attacks, and the ability to use a new, unique attack in addition to its existing ones.
