It’s coming right for us!! – The ship, upon discovering the Sprinting Dirigibug

The Sprinting Dirigibug is a returning enemy that appears in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. This creature is mainly found in the deeper parts of caves. The Sprinting Dirigibug has the same physical composition as most Dirigibugs, having a large, abnormally-shaped body with dark red skin, front padding, and four black legs with sharp claws. They also have a small tail at the end of their body, but it doesn’t move or seem to do anything. The creature also has two eyes with white, glowing sclera and sharp, black pupils.

Sprinting Dirigibugs can be found wandering around in a small area. However, once approached, they will let out a gargley scream before charging at Pikmin. As it charges into the group, it will fling away Pikmin, depetaling them, as well as grabbing up to five of them. They will then stop and eat the Pikmin they snatched up before repeating the process. If attacked, the creature will suddenly screech and run off at high speeds. While fleeing, it will stumble around, having a chance to accidentally trip and fall. It will only stop once it runs out of breath, or Pikmin leave its range. If the latter happens, they will return to their territory. The most notable characteristic of Sprinting Dirigibugs is their ability to adapt to elements; if the creature touches any element like fire or poison, it will suddenly be covered in that element, and it will change its skin tone based on the element of that color. Any Pikmin that aren’t immune to the element that the Sprinting Dirigibug had picked up won’t be able to do any damage. Along with this, the creature will create an elemental trail wherever it runs.

Sprinting Dirigibugs can be very dangerous to take on due to their speeds. If they pick up an element, use the respective Pikmin type to kill the creature. If the Dirigibug has no element on them, White Pikmin are recommended for fighting the Dirigibug, as they can match the speed of the creature running. If keeping pace with a Dirigibug isn't possible, cornering it against a wall or in dead end can be effective. Using Ice Pikmin to freeze or slow down the creature is also a good option.

In Overlord mode, the Sprinting Dirigibug will spit out spheres of elements that it has on at the time and throw them at the Pikmin as it runs away. It will also do it if they spot Pikmin from afar.

Notes

  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #1: Sprinting Dirigibugs can be extremely dangerous when they pick up elements!
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #2: Use fast-moving Pikmin to match the creature’s speed.
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #3 (Overlord mode): Sprinting Dirigibugs will fire out balls of their respective elements to protect themselves as they run!

Olimar's notes

This strange species of Dirigibug has lost its iconic hydrogen sacs it uses for flight. It instead uses its four strong legs to run at top speeds to ambush prey. Along with this, the creature also has an amazing adaption to the elements. They can easily take on virtually any hazard that comes in contact with them, using it as protection or to hunt.

Louie's notes

Dip this bug in fire and let it cook itself. Once you’re done, make thin slices into the meat before adding clovers and garlic powder. Make sure to extinguish it before you eat.

President’s notes

I need an employee who can easily adapt to any situation, move at a fast pace, and is a hard worker. This guy fits the script perfectly! Looks like Olimar should take some notes…

Overlord’s thoughts

The Sprinting Dirigibug, such a fascinating insect. To think this is the only species I’ve found that hasn’t used their little balloons to fly. I tried to give a Dirigibug a balloon once, and it threw a bomb at me. Maybe it’s best if I leave them to their own doings.

The Sprinting Dirigibug is a dirigibug in Pikmin: Distant Planet that is land-based, unlike most of its relatives. It quickly scurries around an area, jumping over most obstacles and enemies in its path, sometimes even accidentally triggering traps. They occasionally trip, which sends them sliding along the ground until naturally slowing down or hitting an obstacle such as a wall or an enemy, recovering and resuming their run shortly thereafter. The Sprinting Dirigibug kills Pikmin one at a time by skewering them on its front legs and then stuffing them into its mouth.

Although any Pikmin type can harm the Sprinting Dirigibug, White Pikmin are most recommended because they can keep up with the creature. Purple Pikmin can also be thrown towards the Sprinting Dirigibug to make their shockwaves trip the creature, making it easier to hit. Managing to land a Pikmin on the creature will stop it in its tracks until it can shake them off and attempt to flee. Leaders can also punch the Sprinting Dirigibug, but the creature's sheer speed can make it difficult to hit. When defeated, a Sprinting Dirigibug will fall on its side, not unlike a Yellow Wollywog, allowing it to be carried.
