Hazard

Wither is a hazard taking the form of a gas that weakens Pikmin, the effects worsening the longer they are exposed to it, and may even kill them. Affected Pikmin appear more feeble, slouched with dangling stems, and with less saturation, worse attack power and movement speed, and a greater chance of tripping and falling. Prolonged exposure doubles the effects, even rendering affected Pikmin vulnerable to the hazard they were once immune to and all other hazards instantly lethal to them. Withered Pikmin gradually recover from their condition as time passes, but Pikmin that drink nectar will recover instantly.

Wither is a hazard introduced in Pikmin 2... Again?. It commonly takes the form of a greenish-gray gas, but a less common form is a black tar of unknown composition. Wither is first found in one of the Giant's Playground's caves, specifically the Fling Ring, where the Wither Progg is first encountered. Later, starting in the Midnight Ruins in the Ominous Underground, wither becomes more common; Lichen Pikmin, discovered around that time, are needed to progress there due to a gloom gate blocking the hole to the next sublevel as they are resistant to wither. Wither negatively affects Pikmin by weakening them, making them deal less damage and move slower, and also making them more feeble, making them lose grip on an enemy they are latched onto when first affected and refuse to attack or pass through the source. Withered also Pikmin appear less saturated, have a sad facial expression, and their stems droop. Essentially, wither has effects opposite those of ultra-spicy spray and ultra-energetic spray, but with added disadvantages. Pikmin under the effects of with will recover after many seconds, or instantly by consuming nectar and even changing nectar. If the Gloom Medic upgrade has been collected, ultra-spicy spray and ultra-energetic spray will also instantly recover Pikmin's health. Just like ice, it cannot kill Pikmin on its own, but if Pikmin are withered while enemies or other hazards are near, it can be devasting. Glow Pikmin resist wither, much like they do most other hazards. Wither is the only hazard in Pikmin 2... Again? to appear before the Pikmin type resistant to it is discovered, excluding the Glow Pikmin, as wither appears in some caves before Midnight Ruins.

The word "wither" in its use refers specifically to a plant decaying, referring to its effects on the half-plant Pikmin.

A counterpart of wither, bloom, was introduced in The Amazing New Update!!.

Notes

Olimar's notes

A strange gas, its composition unknown. The Pikmin on expositions don't seem to feel good from it... It has a weakening effect on them, but it seems nothing happened to me... I named it "wither" because I thought I wouldn't let its name as just "black gas" or "black spore". Strangely, I don't remember seeing wither anywhere on PNF-404 until... It just appeared out of nowhere on my return, much like the creatures that use this gas, which I doubt could have happened in only so many years. This makes me think that something is happening to this planet.

Louie's notes

I tried and... nothing happened. Unfortunately, I can't eat gas, but I tried to eat the suspicious slime from one of those cave floors and I regret it.

The President's notes

Maybe it could be used for movie sets. And it's safe, at least for us, which is even better!

Hocotate Ship's notes

This gaseous substance looks like one of Louie's cooking disasters. I don't want to imagine what kind of damage it can do to me judging by appearance alone. As if that newly hatched, deformed monstrosity with that crimson fog behind it wasn't enough.

Probably, those hearing the word "wither" will imagine it's from the Withering Blowhog, and assume it'll remove those Pikmin's flowers. Not so much. Even I first thought that.
