Notes
Olimar's observations
- “This is one of the few types of bulborb that hasn't changed since my last visit. The fire is a big issue as always, but I thankfully found Red Pikmin before I had to fight any of these. The way these creatures are able to not roast themselves to death is quite remarkable. Just another of the bizarre things you can only see here!”
Cookin' with Louie
- “The oily substance on this beast can be harvested and used as a component in hot sauce for some extra-spicy goodness.”

Notes
Olimar's notes
- “This dangerous creature secretes a substance that causes a chemical reaction with its epidermis, causing a flame that envelops the beast. It is also worthwhile to note that its right eyeball is significantly larger than in the past. When it was still small, there was no lens, causing that eye to not be able to see. As such, this heavily impacted the fiery bulblax's vision, as most grub-dogs have been observed to heavily rely on vision to hunt prey. This caused most fiery bulblaxes to disappear, except for the fortuitous ones whose right eyes were normal-sized. As such, they survived and reproduced, and passed on their genes, making most fiery bulblaxes to have a pair of fully functioning eyeballs.”

“ | We better find some Red Pikmin to take down this ignited grub-dog... | ” | – The ship, upon encountering the Fiery Bulblax |
---|
The Fiery Bulblax is a returning enemy that appears in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature not only has a dwarf variant, the Dwarf Fiery Bulblax, but there is also a boss variant of this creature, the Charred Bulblax. Due to the creature's flaming nature, it’s mainly found in the Badlands and its respective caves. Fiery Bulblaxes take on the stature of most Bulborbs. However, their peach snout and rump are now much more charred and look melted. The creature's rump is a dark maroon, which is covered in a coat of searing flames. The creature also has nostrils, two fangs, two eyestalks, and two bi-clawed feet, like most Bulborbs. However, the eyestalks, while they do have white sclera and dark red pupils, are asymmetrical. The left eye of the Fiery Bulblax is much smaller than its right eye.
Fiery Bulblaxes can be found sleeping, usually near pools of lava, which they can traverse. Attacking the beast can cause it to awaken from its slumber. If brushed upon by a captain, it will also awaken. Pikmin that brush upon it will awaken it, but may burst into flames if they are not Red Pikmin. Bomb rock blasts also awaken the creature. Once awoken, the creature will become extremely aggressive, being the most aggressive grub-dog to encounter, aside from the Charred Bulblax. The Fiery Bulblax will ferociously pursue and gobble up Pikmin, up to fifteen at a time. The creature will pursue Pikmin far from its territory, but will inevitably turn back after enough distance. Any Pikmin that aren’t fire-resistant will start to burn up if they attack the Fiery Bulblax from any area. Even attacking the eyestalks will burst them into flames. If the Fiery Bulblax dies, is under a sprinkler, or enters a pool of water, its flames will extinguish until it leaves the water source.
Fiery Bulblaxes are extremely dangerous to engage. Red Pikmin are the only type that can be used to take them out. If the creature is in the water, Blue Pikmin can also be used. Due to the massive amount of health the creature has, it’s best to attack this creature from the back or by stunning it when touching its eyestalks. Overall, it’s best to use a spray against the creature, or some sort of explosive due to its extremely aggressive nature.
In Overlord mode, the creature not only has increased stats, the beast can also fire out balls of lava at the group, burning Pikmin that touch them. The balls of lava will cover large parts of the ground for up to 20 seconds before sizzling out.
Notes
- Data file #1: Be careful; Fiery Bulblaxes are the most aggressive grub-dog!
- Data file #2: Its ignited skin means that attacking with non-Red Pikmin is a bad idea.
- Data file #3 (Overlord mode): The Fiery Bulblax can fire out lava balls at any unsuspecting Pikmin!
Olimar's notes
- “Due to its combustible wax coating reacting with chemicals its skin produces, this creature has a coating of flame as armor. It seems that the eyes of these beasts do not react well to the fire, as sometimes one of their eyestalks may shrivel due to prolonged flame exposure. This may cripple the beast's ability to hunt, as sight is key for any grub-dog trying to take out prey. It does make up for this with its extremely aggressive nature.”
Louie's notes
- “A creature that cooks itself? Put some A1 sauce and seasonings on it, and you got yourself a free rack of Bulblax ribs!”
President’s notes
- “This giant beast is the perfect guard to chase down debt collectors! Those dolts will never be able to get me now...!”
Overlord’s thoughts
- “He may seem scary and dangerous, but this giant guy has a heart of gold. I know he can be grumpy sometimes, but if you were covered in flames 24/7, you’d be a bit on edge, too.”
