Attacks Eats Pikmin

The Cavernous Bulbat is a highly divergent grub-dog in Pikmin X: Deep Freeze that is thoroughly adapted for flight. A cave-dwelling creature, it roosts on walls until approached, alerting it to fly into the air and inquisitively flutter around Pikmin, periodically swooping down and snatching up to two of them to eat. These enemies are always in groups of three, but only one of them is around at first; the other two will swoop in from the ceiling to assist their cohort once it has been awakened by nearby Pikmin. Their numbers make them somewhat dangerous, but Cavernous Bulbats also do not have much health and can be easily grounded by a few thrown Pikmin.

Attacks Eats Pikmin

The Cave Bulbat is a winged grub-dog appearing in Pikmin: Wide World. They reside exclusively in subterranean environments such as caves and Colossal Hollow, using the darkness to their advantage, grouping up in packs consisting of 4-5 individuals. Typically, one or two Cave Bulbats may be fluttering idly about in the air in the pack's territory, the rest clinging upside-down to the cave ceiling above, but sometimes the entire pack may be hanging from the ceiling. When Pikmin or leaders pass below, any active Cave Bulbats will gain altitude, potentially even choosing to attack, while the rest of the pack rapidly descends one after another to join the fight. Cave Bulbats prefer to keep their distance from Pikmin and leaders, anticipating what actions they may take before suddenly backing up and, with a light screech, swooping down at Pikmin to grab up to two of them in their talons to eat or leaders to scratch or bite them. While Cave Bulbat activity is often indicated by the characteristic chattering noise their wings make while flapping, the HocoPad's camera functionality can be used to see their glowing eyes peering down from above.

Notably unique from other grub-dogs, Cave Bulbats barely resemble any of their kind except for similarities they have with dwarf bulborbs. They have a small frame, a rounded head, an upturned snout and an overbite, sharp talons, small, glowing, yellow eyes mounted on stiff, stubby eyestalks, some hairs on their chin, and lastly, a pair of purplish butterfly-like wings with lighter spots. Its wings can be easily mistaken for its body pattern while wrapped around its body, when in reality its posterior's color matches the rest of its body except for its lighter-colored spots.

Cave Bulbats are notoriously troublesome grub-dogs because of both their size and their behaviors. While around Pikmin and leaders, they ascend just out of range of all thrown Pikmin except Yellow Pikmin and especially Winged Pikmin, though, with precise aim, they can be hit by any Pikmin type while swooping. Though Winged Pikmin are instrumental for their ability to engage airborne enemies with ease, they are incapable of taking a Cave Bulbat out of the air unless many are latched onto it at once. Upon being hit by a thrown Pikmin, a Cave Bulbat will plummet to the ground and suffer significant damage upon impact, harmlessly knocking away any other Pikmin it may land on. Perhaps the most effective weapon against Cave Bulbats is light; the Radiant Illuminator deters them from attacking leaders and Pikmin around them, a camera flash from the HocoPad can momentarily daze them, and a dazzling bomb rock can significantly damage them with their overwhelming light. No matter the method, each one will send a Cave Bulbat, and even its entire pack if used effectively, plummeting to the ground with minor damage on impact, blinded and helpless. As well, they will also stay away from sunlight shining in, as well as Common Glowcaps and Colossal Glowcaps. Upon defeat, a Cave Bulbat will convulse and screech woefully before curling up, hiding itself in its wings, and dying.

In ultra-spicy difficulty, Cave Bulbats tend to hang together for unexpected surprise attacks on Pikmin and leaders below, which is especially dangerous because they will attack immediately upon descending to them. Additionally, they appear in packs almost twice the usual size, 6-8 individuals to be exact, intensifying their attack.

Notes

  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #1 (all difficulties): The rest of the pack hides above while one or two Cave Bulbats hunt. Some packs stage ambushes.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #2 (all difficulties): Cave Bulbats like to fly just out of reach. Counterattack when they decide to make a move.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #3 (ultra-spicy difficulty only): Cave Bulbats are known ambush predators and hunt in large packs. They make quite the entrance.

Olimar's comments

PWW Captain Olimar icon.png The blight of cave explorers everywhere, cave bulbats regularly infest their subterranean habitats and drive out any and all competition during mating season. When no other food is available, they quickly resort to cannibalism. Fortunately, outside of that, cave bulbats tend to make a relatively peaceful living in small packs, naturally distributing their populations throughout their territories.

Shacho's comments

PWW President icon.png The Hocotate government owns these huge floating drones that officials pilot and do things with, like taking away Olimar's prized S.S. Dolphin. So, what if I had a couple dozen of these little guys lift and transport Hocotate Freight merchandise? Might not be a bad idea... if they didn't hate light so much.

Marie's comments

PWW Marie icon.png Cave bulbats may not be the cutest grub-dogs, but they sure are lovers. Their favorite form of affection is giving gentle nibbles, which wouldn't be so bad if the entire pack didn't do everything together. It's pretty common to be covered in their teeth impressions and slobber. Eugh.

PWW Louie icon.png The more, the merrier! Fry up a whole batch of these morsels for a delicious, crunchy snack the whole party can enjoy. The wings are my personal favorite part.

Dolphin Lander's comments

PWW Dolphin Lander icon.png Alright, somebody has to do it; why are cave bulbats so sensitive to light even though their eyes glow? Am I really the only person, intelligence, or whatever to ask this? I suppose there could be a chance that the individual reading these entries also thought that... Maybe bulbats see differently than most other creatures do.
