Blue Pikmin are a blue species of Pikmin that have the special ability of water resistance. Besides coloration, these Pikmin are distinguishable from other Pikmin species by their pink mouth-like gills and their white petals. Blue Pikmin can be propagated through the Blue Onion, or by throwing other Pikmin species into a Lapis Lazuli Candypop Bud. In Pikmin 1 and Pikmin 2, idle Blue Pikmin that see nearby Pikmin drowning in water will run to them, pick them up, and throw them to shore. In Pikmin 3 and Hey! Pikmin, Blue Pikmin can not rescue drowning Pikmin but can swim freely in water.

Blue Pikmin are a returning Pikmin type appearing in Pikmin 2... Again?. They appear as they always have, being of average size and with a body shape like those of the Red Pikmin and Yellow Pikmin, and having a pink mouth-like gill in the shape of a frown. Blue Pikmin are first found at the Treetop Valley, being the 5th Pikmin type to be discovered and the 3rd with an Onion. In fact, their Onion is the first sign of them to be found. The Blue Onion is trapped within a potted plant, but merely freeing it will not activate it; it must be placed in water for the Onion to become usable, whereupon it will eject a single Blue Pikmin seed. Blue Pikmin have all average statistics, but they are resistant to water, meaning they can walk or swim through water bodies without drowning and aren't choked by water droplets. If the Mastery Command upgrade is obtained, Blue Pikmin can be commanded specifically to rescue Pikmin drowning in a water body, which they do by throwing them to dry land. Drowning Pikmin are saved the moment the Blue Pikmin grabs hold of them, even if they are about to perish.

Blue Pikmin are the sixth type of Pikmin to join Olimar in Pikmin Forever, although they are seen before Mushroom Pikmin, found in the Luxuriant Lakeside. Blue Pikmin can swim in water. They sink to the bottom of water bodies and are immune to water jets, but now they can also drink water and store it for thirty seconds; they have a droplet around their stem to represent this effect. Blue Pikmin carry items faster in water, and storing water in their stems prolongs this trait outside of water bodies. Their stored water can also be deposited in obstacles like a sponge bridge.

In Pikmin Kart, Blue Pikmin are items that are commonly found in item boxes. Once thrown from the front of a kart, a Blue Pikmin will latch onto a random kart that's in their range. They hold on for longer than other Pikmin would, and the driver of the kart they are latched onto has to swerve wildly to shake them off, and they require more effort to shake off than other Pikmin types. Blue Pikmin will not release themselves from a kart if its driver enters a body of water. As with all Pikmin items, the Whistle can be used to steal them for use on opponents.

Blue Pikmin are, for once, not the last Pikmin type found in Pikmin V, being found in Clear Creek before the Wingeds. It regains its ability to lifeguard, which was absent in Pikmin 3, though it now requires carrying the Pikmin to shore much like real-world lifeguarding. It also gains a unique voice that has more extreme pitch changes.

Notes
Edward's notes
- “Blue Pikmin have small little gills where a mouth would be. This looks adorable but it also helps when needing to get stuff done underwater. I found them in the Mucky Springs. More investigation led to finding out that they can store water in their mouth and then spit it out when necessary.”
Steward's notes
- “Without the help of these little guys, I would be stranded on this planet. These are definitely my favorite for not only helping me and Edward but being my favorite color as well. That might be biased but I don't care, I can put whatever I want for these notes.”
Olimar's notes
- “These little guys are the third Pikmin type I found when I was stranded on this planet the first time and they helped me find the lost parts of my now-defunct S.S. Dolphin.”

Blue Pikmin make a reappearance in Pikmin: Attack of the Breadbugs and are immune to water as they always were. They and the Blue Onion are found in the Marsh Territory of the Land of Wonders, in a deep pool of water that covers the entirety of the Onion. The only way of accessing Blue Pikmin is if the electric gate protecting them is destroyed with the use of Yellow Pikmin. Multiple Pellet Posies and pellets are scattered about near the Blue Onion for the Blue Pikmin to grow their population.

“ | It seems the first Pikmin we have found is the Blue Pikmin! Thank goodness we found these Pikmin in this beach land. I'd hate to traverse these blinnow-filled waters without any Pikmin to take them on! Come on, let's start propagating these Pikmin! | ” | – The ship, upon discovering the Blue Pikmin |
---|
Blue Pikmin are a returning type of Pikmin in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. They are one of the first types to be discovered. Like most Pikmin types, the Blue Pikmin has an obtuse head and small body, with two stubby legs and feet with three toes, along with two arms with hands that have four fingers. They have two eyes with white sclerae and large, black pupils, and a tall stem on the top of their head that can sprout into a leaf, bud, or flower. The Blue Pikmin, as their name implies, has blue skin, and most notably, a small mouth that acts as gills. The voice of a Blue Pikmin has a gurgly, watery tone. They have their own Onion, the Blue Onion, which can be merged into the Master Onion. To create more Blue Pikmin without an Onion, throw other Pikmin types into a Lapis Lazuli Candypop Bud. When an ultra-refreshing spray is used, Blue Pikmin gain a damage boost for a short time, despite the spray affecting only leaders.
The Blue Pikmin don't have much in terms of other abilities. They have average stats all across the board, except for their damage output. Their damage output is less powerful than other Pikmin types, which makes them unpreferable when taking on enemies. Thankfully, most enemies in the water, like the Puckering Blinnow or Water Dumple, are very weak and can be taken out easily. However, stronger enemies like the Commandeering Basseer, Ocean Dumple, and Blue Bulborb, can pose a great threat to Blue Pikmin. Extreme caution should be taken when attacking strong aquatic enemies with Blue Pikmin, and using a spray may be necessary when fighting said enemies.
Blue Pikmin have one hazard immunity: water. They are able to survive in pools of it and swim around in them. When swimming around, their movement speed is doubled, and they are better at flanking enemies and attacking their weak points. If Pikmin are drowning in pools of water, then idle Blue Pikmin will rush up to them, proceeding to grab them and toss them out of the water and onto shore. This also means Blue Pikmin are immune to water found on enemies, like the Adult Bubblimp, and water attacks from enemies, like the Watery Blowhog or Hydro-Spouting Forcet. They can also break hazards that utilize water, like water geysers. Blue Pikmin can even walk through sprinkler systems without being choked by the falling water droplets. One of its most notable resistances is to rainy days. In areas that are being blasted with rain or thunder, all non-Blue Pikmin will be weakened by the rain. Blue Pikmin can negate these weakening effects, however, and even gain a small strength boost in the rain. This means Blue Pikmin are a valuable asset for fighting enemies and collecting treasures.
In Overlord mode, Blue Pikmin don't swim as fast as they normally do in pools of water.
Notes
- Data file #1: Blue Pikmin can survive any form of water, from enemies or in pools!
- Data file #2: If Pikmin are drowning, then Blue Pikmin can save them from their demise.
- Data file #3: Pikmin swim at double the speed in the water, and are much more agile.
- Data file #4: During rainy days, Blue Pikmin benefit from the rain!
- Data file #5: Blue Pikmin aren't too strong; they're the weakest of all the Pikmin types.
Olimar's notes
- “Blue Pikmin, like most Pikmin, come from the Ambuloradicis class, which are creatures that exhibit plant-like characteristics. Blue Pikmin breathe through their skin using their stomata, which means they are amphibious. They also have gills as well, which resembles a mouth, funnily enough. The absorption of water, as one could tell, benefits this species of Pikmin and its botanic qualities. It especially is prevalent on rainy days, as most other Pikmin are weaker and sluggish, but these Pikmin burst with energy! The excess water storage can be converted into energy to use for the Blue Pikmin, which allows them to be much more agile and quicker in the water. Don't underestimate them in their home base.”
Louie's notes
- “Why does it have a mouth? Can it taste food too? I must test this theory!!”
President’s notes
- “Of course MY treasures would have to fall into the water! Thankfully, these Pikmin can dive in, and collect my valuables. Perhaps, I can send them to the Hocotatian Trench, and see if they can find treasure chests loaded with MILLIONS OF POKOS! I can already see it now! Schacho, leader of the Hocotate Freight Pirates!”
Overlord’s thoughts
- “These Pikmin love water. Like, a lot. They love it so much they end up slipping into my water bottles to live in them. I always have to check them before I drink, lest I choke on a Blue Pikmin. Especially after the Blue Pikmin Incident, I must always check all of my sources of water. I don't want a repeat of the Blue Pikmin Incident.
...I never want to remember that.”

Blue Pikmin in Pikmin: Dual Worlds can be encountered at any time after discovering Aureolin Archipelago, which can be done at any time after obtaining Red Pikmin. They are immune to water, have average statistics on land, and somehow always seem to die first. However, they can swim, and as such their mobility in water is essentially unlimited, which is very useful due to the verticality of the ocean section of the area. The problem is getting to them in the first place.

Blue Pikmin are the fourth variety of Pikmin to be discovered in Pikmin: Return to the Distant Planet. They are discovered in the Stagnant Sea, where they are most useful as most of the land in this area is flooded with water. Thanks to their mouth-shaped gills and amphibious nature, they can traverse pools of water with ease. They can also rescue drowning Pikmin by throwing them onto nearby dry land.
Blue Pikmin have larger mouths compared to other Pikmin, so much so that it's their defining feature. These mouths allow them to take in water and filter it through gills located on their cheeks, allowing them to survive both on land and in water. This makes Blue Pikmin the only Pikmin that can retrieve items submerged in water, as all other types flail around before drowning in bodies of water. Blue Pikmin are more vulnerable to frost and the cold and will begin to wilt in the cold sooner than other types.
Blue Pikmin are the most balanced out of all of the other types, making them not stand out anywhere in particular in doing tasks that other Pikmin can do just as well or better. However, their water resistance makes them valuable for retrieving objects submerged underwater, as without them certain objects are impossible to obtain. This resistance becomes even more crucial to during rainy days.

Blue Pikminappear in Pikmin: Treasure Colonization and possess the ability to survive in water. Thanks to their gills, they can enter and leave bodies of water without any problem, and water projectiles from traps or enemies have no effect on them. They're the last Pikmin to be discovered. They can swim, allowing them to swim up into areas above or attack enemies higher up in the water, in which then they act more like aquatic Winged Pikmin while swimming. These Pikmin can also throw drowning Pikmin that are nearby, which they will only do if they're either idling or are commanded to do so. Their petals have a white color to them. Additionally, Blue Pikmin are thirty-three millimeters tall and have a carrying capacity of spray while under the effects of ultra-sour spray.
Notes
Olimar's notes
- “The best type when it comes to exploration due to how much water there is on this planet. Mysteriously, they have also learned to spit out water, from what I have seen from them. This may be the next evolutionary step happening right under our noses! Sadly, this ability has no real benefit, but maybe in the future, they'll get better at this, and it can become a massive help to them and us.”
Tang's notes
- “These guys have to be one of my favorites in general, just the mouth-like gills gives me a smile. Also possessing the ability to live underwater is stellar, making them vital for under battles. Maybe we will find a huge creature that will be underwater!”
Robin's notes
- “I've come to learn that they actually act like lifeguards. How did I come to this conclusion? From their ability to throw drowning Pikmin back to land, of course! That and their little mouths make them my favorite besides the Yellow Pikmin and Winged Pikmin.”

Jade's notes
- “Blue Pikmin / Pikmin family / The Blue Pikmin have a blue color and a pink mouth. They have gills on the bottom sides of the head, allowing them to breathe underwater. Blue Pikmin are the only Pikmin to have a muscle on the side of the elbows and hips that allows them to swim, and without it, they would not be able to move their arms back. Blue Pikmin are more closely related to Sticky Pikmin than others, as the skin of a Blue Pikmin is slightly slimy, like a fish's, allowing them to move smoothly in water. This slime is produced by a gland on their stem. Blue Pikmin are quite amazing!”
Topaz's notes
- “These guys have such a swimming technique! How in PNF-404 do they do it with such ease? They have little mouths that never close, so I think that they need water in them to survive! Jade just thinks it's a myth. P.S. Don't put your finger in their mouth (they have little sharp teeth)!”

Blue Pikmin are an aquatic main Pikmin species discovered at Arid Oasis in Pikmin: Wide World. They are resistant to water and can swim in pools of it. They have average attack power, mobility, throw range, and digging speed. A Blue Pikmin's defining features are its mouth-like gills, webbed hands and feet, and white petals. The voice of a Blue Pikmin is more timid-sounding than that of other Pikmin. Lapis Lazuli Candypops can be used to convert other Pikmin types into Blue Pikmin.
When a Blue Pikmin detects a Pikmin drowning in a nearby body of water, it will immediately rush over to save it, even breaking away from the group if necessary. When a Blue Pikmin reaches a drowning Pikmin, they will throw them to dry land, even carrying them close enough to shore before throwing them if necessary. Blue Pikmin can also swim underwater, but they usually only do so either when in pursuit of an underwater enemy or if the leader they are following is swimming.
Notes
- Data file #1 (all difficulties): Blue Pikmin can survive water and swim in it, thanks to their gills.
- Data file #2 (all difficulties): Blue Pikmin have all average attributes.
- Data file #3 (all difficulties): If Pikmin are drowning nearby, Blue Pikmin will try to rescue them.
Olimar's comments
- “The mouth-like structure on the blue pikmin's face is actually its gills. This, along with its webbed hands and feet, allows it to live and hunt effectively in its aquatic habitats. It relishes being sprayed with water.”
Shacho's comments
- “If I could, I would bring these pikmin with me to hunt for salvage at the bottom of water bodies on Hocotate, then sell it! ...Ah, Olimar just reminded me that there really isn't that much water on Hocotate. At least we can do it on this planet!”
Marie's comments
- “Blue pikmin are so fun to play with in the water. They may not look like they enjoy it, since their gills are in a frown shape, but we both giggle and laugh while we splash each other and push each other in!”
Louie's comments
- “Lots of condensation forms on their skin. Drink some if you're feeling thirsty.”
Dolphin Lander's comments
- “According to logs in my database, Olimar's previously discovered blue pikmin in a forest cave and in a forest pond. I wonder why they've moved to the beachside? Pikmin have vacations?”
