The Smoky Progg is a dark green and black creature with glowing white eyes with a pinkish ring around them. The progg is initially contained within a massive egg and, if approached, will break out within four to eight seconds. It constantly emits a cloud of gas behind it that is harmful to both Pikmin and leaders, and the creature itself is able to uproot Pikmin sprouts.

Smoky Progg returns in Pikmin 2... Again? that acts as the boss of Ominous Underground. It looks and behaves exactly like its Pikmin 4 incarnation, but the gloom patch resulting from its signature attack is so massive that water geysers are often needed to avoid it. The gloom patch persists for a long time before it dissipates.

An egg is hatching... A baby creature? An egg yolk for my breakfast? A chick? The ultimate nectar? Well, our guesses crumble apart like a biscuit when we see what comes out: a horrific, nightmarish abomination. I would hug most of the baby versions of this planet's creatures or their smaller versions, but this one I wouldn't have the courage to even look at. I would run away faster than light if I ever saw one, that's the truth. What surprises me is that this... thing, is really a larval Mamuta. How can a creature grow bigger than the parents and don't look alike? I'm relieved to see that it's a malformed one, so at least we know not all baby Mamutas are as terrifying as that one. At least, I hope, because we have never seen one yet.

In Pikmin 3 (Flish version), the Smoky Progg is much weaker and often appears as miniboss, but in Ruined Caverns the Smoky Progg is a full-fledged boss. There, four appear from separate progg eggs, which fall from the ceiling every five seconds, to give time to kill a previous progg, and shatter upon hitting the ground, releasing the Smoky Progg within.

The Smoky Progg is the rarest enemy in Pikmin Galaxy Adventure, only appearing once in the main story. It is fought in Progg Cavern, a secret cave found on the Pikmin Planet after beating the game. White Pikmin and Green Pikmin should be used against the Smoky Progg because depending on what color it changes, it will use that hazard; if it turns green, it uses acid, and if it turns purple, it uses poison. It roams around, so keep other Pikmin far away from it. The Smoky Progg also makes an indirect appearance in a 4-Player Battle map, its egg embedded halfway into a wall.

The Smoky Progg makes an appearance in Pikmin: Attack of the Breadbugs as the boss of the Toxin Territory. Its egg rests in a nest of metal scraps and will not hatch until the fifth day Captain Olimar is in the Toxin Territory or it has been disturbed. It wanders around the area aimlessly, even passing through or by the landing site, and attacks only when attacked. The poison it trails will kill even White Pikmin, so caution is advised when swarming. Yet another attack of the Smoky Progg is roaring, causing Pikmin to panic and scatter, forcing Captain Olimar to recollect his squad. The Smoky Progg can only be attacked with White Pikmin, as all the other Pikmin will die from simply making any contact with it. Once killed, the Smoky Progg will melt into its shadow, leaving behind a bronze sphere worth one hundred Pikmin seeds.

The Smoky Progg is a giant frog-like amorphous being in Pikmin: Before the Impact. Its defining characteristics are its smoky green body and relatively large glowing eyes. It initially starts out inside of a spotted egg, waiting to hatch, and upon doing so, begins to attack. It leaves behind a trail of gloom as it moves, which will instantly kill any Pikmin that make contact with it, spit out a projectile that turns into a wave of gloom on the ground, and cause fear with a shrieking roar. It is quite a formidable beast, having a lot of health, and being able to wipe out entire groups of Pikmin with its gloom attacks.

Notes

Stevvy’s observations

Deep in the depths of the marsh, there lies a peculiar egg. You expect this egg to contain something special, be it some kind of young creature, or delicious nectar, but what actually comes out is a creature of pure death. This is a creature born of terror, born of nightmares, born of the deepest fears of every person in the universe. It rampages around the swamp, leaving behind a trail of noxious fumes that cause even the healthiest of plants to wither and fall apart. It is ruthless and will leave you for dead. Here is a tip for any daring explorers wanting to see the sights of this planet: if you hear a ghastly scream and see red glowing eyes in the distance, run. Run for your life. It is coming, and it will kill you.

Natti’s cookbook

If you're ever out at night trying to procure ingredients, look out for this dangerous beast. You might not make it out alive. The creature itself... I wouldn't cook it even if I could.

Attacks Panics, uproots, and suffocates Pikmin, fires gloom balls, causes earthquakes

The Smoky Progg is a returning boss appearing in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature retains its appearance from Pikmin 4. The boss can only be found inside of large, brown-spotted eggs. The egg will never hatch above ground if left alone, but will inevitably hatch underground. If the egg is damaged, the egg will begin to move before it inevitably breaks open. Afterward, the Progg will scream ferociously, initiating the boss fight.

The Smoky Progg will pursue any Pikmin it sees. It will move over any Pikmin in its way, being able to kill any type with its deadly gloom. If the Pikmin are farther away or on elevated land, the Progg will begin to fire balls of gloom from its mouth. When the gloom lands, it will create a small ring of gloom that expands for a few seconds before dissipating. If attacked, the Progg will shake off all Pikmin. It will then scream, sending Pikmin into a frenzy. If the Progg wanders over to an Onion, it will also scream, uprooting them. They will also grab and kill any Pikmin attempting to enter the Onion. The Smoky Progg can even slam the ground with its feet and produce a massive earthquake for a few seconds that sends Pikmin tumbling and tripping everywhere. The best way to kill the Progg is by applying constant pressure to the beast, as continually throwing Pikmin will slowly drain its health. Keep in mind that the Progg is immune to hazards, stunning, elemental properties, sprays, and even damage multipliers. If defeated, the creature will slowly become a cloud of gloom and dissipate. leaving behind a small brown pearl that can be collected for a wealth of seeds. Defeating a Smoky Progg for the first time will grant the "Amphibian Nightmare" achievement.

Attacks Poisons and entrances Pikmin

The Smoky Progg is a late-game boss in Pikmin: Shipwrecked Stargazers. It is encountered in Marrow Mines, a bone-filled cave within Misty Badlands. The Smoky Progg's egg is stranded on an island, located in the center of a massive pond in a chamber built around a right whale's skull. Although vulnerable to its poison, Blue Pikmin are preferable for reaching and cracking the Smoky Progg's massive egg. When hatched, the Smoky Progg acts similar to its Pikmin 1 iteration, but its movements are more visually fluid and aggressive. The Smoky Progg is slightly less lethal, as its toxins merely kill Pikmin much faster than normal, rather than being instantaneous, and White Pikmin are immune to them. In addition to this, the Smoky Progg can also let out a cry that causes Pikmin to oafishly walk into the poison left behind as residue. When the Smoky Progg enters water, it will become a massive cloud of pollutants that instantly chokes all Pikmin it passes in the water without immunities. It will return to its normal state when exiting the water.

When rematched in Gladiator's Gulch, the Smoky Progg's arena has femur bones jutting out of the pond, obstructing the squadron as they maneuver through it, while the intangible Smoky Progg effortlessly passes through them.

Notes

Olimar's notes

Its ghastly appearance and destructive attributes have left scientists to ponder what this phantasmic abomination truly is, but DNA experiments and visual observations imply that it is, in fact, a larval mamuta of an indeterminate species. This rare mutation is most commonly seen in newborns that are forced into hatching prematurely from external forces. It is vaguely similar to normal mamuta larvae appearance-wise, but with many supernatural traits: a body composed of smoke that near-instantly asphyxiates those that breathe it in and causes irreversible burns on organic tissue, "eyes" that are more or less disembodied, hovering balls of light, and a metallic sphere with an appearance similar to dull brass, conjecturally named a "pearl", where its true organs are assumed to be located. Smoky Proggs tend to not last in their environment, but a downed specimen can leave behind a cloud of miasma that, if left undisturbed, will linger for hours at a time. The fact that this incredibly dangerous, revenant-like creature can exist naturally, without any sort of artificial interference, is extremely disturbing.

Louie's notes

Crack open this phantom's dull pearl, and... Wait, why do I smell hydrogen sulfide?

Addendum: to whoever it may concern, this is not Louie writing, this is the Ship. Louie has been found passed out, laying in the middle of the Lumberlift's now ruined, smoke-filled kitchen. Despite the burns on his suit, no damage has been observed on his flesh. I myself believe that the Progg's core exploded suddenly, and Louie's suit put him into forced stasis from the ensuing physical and mental shock. Louie will wake up eventually, but let this be a lesson to never try to prepare a dish out of the Smoky Progg... ever.

Ship's comments

You got all that? Good.

Attacks Suffocates and uproots Pikmin, summons enemies

In Pikspore, the Smoky Progg is the boss of Aquatic Ruins. Like the Waterwraith, the progg's egg will sometimes fall on odd-numbered sublevels, the creature then hatching and pursuing Olimar. The creature is skeletal, bone-white with no facial features whatsoever, and instantly kills any Pikmin it touches.

The progg's egg can be seen resting on the ground of the final sublevel of the cave, and after it hatches the true progg, which is green with pink eyes, is fought. It slowly pursues Pikmin while summoning Progglings to knock them over and periodically charges blindly at its prey. Only Green Pikmin can survive its deadly onslaught of pain. Olimar comments that the white progg seen in the Aquatic Ruins may be an ethereal duplicate of the real progg, created to extract emotions, mostly fear, and bodily fluids from intruders, which are used to feed the real progg.
