Appearance in Pikmin 4.
Scientific name | Hortulanus asymmetria
Family | Shepik (unofficial) |
The Mamuta is a fairly large, hairy creature and has two small eyes with dark markings around each one. Its body is notably asymmetrical with large, muscular arms that have strange markings around the wrists. Mamutas in Pikmin 1 are neutral, simply standing still and watching Pikmin that walk by; if any harm comes to it, however, it becomes enraged and attacks. In Pikmin 2, despite being initially so gentle that Unmarked Spectralids can land on them, Mamutas become aggressive when so much as approached. These creatures attack by pounding Pikmin into the ground. This doesn't kill them but replants them, and flowers by some unknown process. Leaders, as opposed to Pikmin, do take damage from Mamuta attacks.

Mamuselah is the Mamuta that appears in Pikmin: Antarctic Survival. He is one of the initial characters that start Awakened and usable from the beginning of the story.
Mamuselah is one of the oldest characters, claiming to be over a thousand years old. The game states that Mamutas have incredibly long lifespans, usually living into their late hundreds before being taken by old age. This makes Mamuselah unusually old, even for a Mamuta, if his claims of age are to be believed. Mamuselah states that he spent most of his life in a "green field of flowers" before being "whisked away" to the Antarctic only a short time before the events of the main story. Judging by Mamuselah's descriptions of this "flower field", it is likely that the area he describes is the Blossoming Arcadia from Pikmin 4. A few years before the events of Antarctic Survival, Mamuselah says that he fell through a "gateway in the sky" which brought him to the Antarctic. After this strange occurrence, Mamuselah ended up taking residence in the Trampled Tundra section of the Antarctic, where he would rest and cultivate a small garden of winter flowers before encountering and being awoken by Tatoursin. After his Awakening, Mamuselah went on to take up residence in the Diamond Settlement and began a flower garden there instead.
Mamuselah fills a variety of roles in the Diamond Settlement, primarily a "central planning" role where he takes inventory of settlement items, keeps track of constructed buildings, and records current settlement residents and their housing. Mamuselah has created a blend of nectar and pollen with similar properties to ink using extracts from his flowers, and he uses this nectar ink to record this information on wood-chips which he uses as a writing base. In addition to this, Mamuselah produces Mamuterra bricks from raw material, using a traditional recipe that has been passed down from Mamuta to Mamuta for countless generations. These bricks are one of the main materials used for building construction in the Diamond Settlement, along with Crystal's snow bricks, which are lower quality but require less raw material to create. Besides central planning and construction of bricks, Mamuselah is skilled at constructing buildings, as he was a builder for his Mamuta tribe in his youth. Mamuselah also plants flower gardens and takes care of the flowers and other plants all over the Diamond Settlement, though he views this as a hobby and not official job work.
Mamutas are stated to be among the most intelligent life-forms of PNF-404, rivaled only by Wraiths in their level of intelligence. As a result of this quality, Mamuselah's Awakening did very little to increase his actual intelligence, which was already comparable to that of Awakened creatures. Instead, the primary change to Mamuselah as a result of his Awakened status was in the changes to his physiology that Awakening always brings, and more importantly in bringing Mamuselah an understanding of the Awakened language, allowing him to communicate with and collaborate with the other Awakened creatures.
Mamuselah is amicable and good-natured, tending to get along well with other Awakened creatures and enjoying casual conversation. Mamuselah can be quite talkative with the settlement residents, often telling long tales about stories of his youth, which can go on for a very long time. Mamuselah often talks about his life before the Antarctic. In his stories, he describes how he used to work as a brickmaker and architect, building many structures and houses for the Mamuta tribe that he lived in. Mamuselah mentions that in his younger years he was fit and quite athletic and popular, often being one of the first picks for Mamuta sports teams. He mentions a variety of sports that the Mamutas of his tribe would play, primarily two sports resembling real-world basketball and football. Though Mamuselah tells tales of how full of energy and active he used to be, it is clear that he is not this way anymore in his older years, as Mamuselah will often drift off in the middle of his stories and fall asleep when telling stories after sunset.
Though Mamuselah is usually very calm and easygoing, some things can set him off and cause him to fly into a rage, similar to the Mamutas of Pikmin 1 and Pikmin 4. The main occurrences that trigger Mamuselah's anger are any sort of damage to his prized flowers, and when he is dealing with especially rude or irritating residents for an extended period of time. Mamuselah gives Rush an exception in the latter case, as although Rush can be incredibly rude, he is also a loyal and hardworking member of the team. However, any other residents who act abrasively to Mamuselah will be responded to much more harshly.
Mamuselah's name is a combination of "Mamuta", his species, and "Methuselah", an ancient figure who is said to have lived to almost one thousand years of age. This name for Mamuselah is fitting considering his advanced age, even among Mamutas.

Attacks | Buries Pikmin |
The Mamuta is a returning enemy appearing in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature retains its furry incarnation from Pikmin 4. Mamutas can be found around fields of flowers and spectralids, sitting down and slowly rocking themselves back and forth. The Mamuta is completely passive, and will not attack Pikmin unless they attack first, and even serves more as an ally to them. If a Pikmin is suffering from a hazard like fire or poison, it will run to the Pikmin and whack it with its hand, extinguishing the hazard but also deflowering the Pikmin. If a Pikmin is drowning, the Mamuta will run into the water and throw them out of it, similar to Blue Pikmin. Mamutas will even try to get Pikmin out of slippery oil or sand pits. However, if attacked, the Mamuta will defend itself by slamming the Pikmin into the ground with its hands, also flowering them. If they attempt to slam a Dart Pikmin, they will recoil in pain and be stunned for a moment.

The Mamuta, in Pikmin: Hybrids, appears in an area named after it and behaves slightly differently. They actively guard a small plot of land occupied by Pikmin sprouts and attack Olimar when he steps onto it. After they are defeated, he can safely pluck the sprouts to supplement his Pikmin population.

Attacks | Buries Pikmin |
The Mamuta is a shepik appearing in Pikmin: Wide World. It stands on dry land, alone or in pairs, completely still, facing a random direction or the Mamuta it is with, looking straight ahead or resting its eyes. It will watch leaders and Pikmin in its view, but otherwise will not react to them even if they touch it. When near Pikmin, it may reach out to feel them, which Pikmin have various reactions to. While near Pikmin sprouts, a Mamuta will lounge back facing them, using its arms to support itself, and occasionally purr. No Pikmin except Mushroom Pikmin and Alien Pikmin, interactions seen only in Bottomless Abyss, will attack Mamutas unless made to, even when idle.
The Mamuta has a quite bizarre appearance. It is a medium-sized, asymmetrical creature covered in coarse off-white hair, sometimes with patches of moss growing on it. Its only visible facial feature is a pair of circular light blue eyes on its front. Its shoulders are two different sizes, but both arms are long and have fleshy pincers at the end. What appears to be the pattern around an Onion's equator is displayed on its wrists. On the underside of the Mamuta are clawed feet.
While a Mamuta may appear completely harmless, it will readily defend itself when threatened by smashing attacking Pikmin and leaders into the ground and can do so from the front or sides, or even both simultaneously. As Mamutas are often positioned on soft terrain, this merely buries Pikmin fully or leaders partially, also flowering Pikmin. On hard terrain, however, this can crush Pikmin and seriously injure leaders. Mamutas are careful about not killing Pikmin, though, and will thoughtfully but forcibly sweep them out of the way before pummeling leaders. Mamutas are also careful to not attack Pikmin not actively attacking it. When left alone, an angry Mamuta will take some time to calm down, pacing about its small territory until it comes to a stop, and from that point on, resume its initial passive behavior; that is, until leaders or something else except a Harvester Mamuta begins plucking Pikmin sprouts near it, which will enrage it again. Because of its defensive capabilities, attacking from the front is not particularly effective, but attacking from behind is, especially when charging Pikmin into it. When charged from the front, a Mamuta will protect itself by crossing its arms in front of itself. Throwing Pikmin onto it also works regardless of how it is approached. Upon death, a Mamuta will tip back forward and back briefly before falling backward and curling its arms under itself, forming a circular shape.
In ultra-spicy difficulty, Mamutas will become aggressive toward leaders near any Pikmin they buried.
Notes
- Data file #1 (all difficulties): A Mamuta will not bother Pikmin or leaders that do not bother it.
- Data file #2 (all difficulties): When provoked, a Mamuta will pound its aggressors into the ground.
- Data file #3 (all difficulties): Pikmin a Mamuta plants will be instantly flowered.
- Data file #4 (all difficulties): Plucking Pikmin a Mamuta buries will instantly provoke it.
- Data file #5 (ultra-spicy difficulty only): Mamutas will become aggressive if leaders approach their flowers.
Olimar's comments
- “The mamuta is a largely unremarkable creature except for the markings around its wrists. The markings are identical to those displayed on an onion, suggesting a deep connection with the pikmin, or at least a strong indication of a sort of mamuta culture.”
Shacho's comments
- “These really weird things look like they enjoy some gardening! I'm sure they'll get along great with some gardeners... until it's time to harvest.”
Marie's comments
- “Mamutas are one of the more interesting pets. They can cultivate plants even in places they could not grow alone, and tend to them as if they were their children... only to consume their petals and nectar as sustenance. They don't mind company but hate when something ruins its flowers.”
Louie's comments
- “Tastes like chicken. Feels like chicken. Hairy chicken. Throw in the oven until it's done, throw on some breadcrumbs or sauce, whatever!”
Dolphin Lander's comments
- “I can't help but notice that pikmin won't attack mamutas until made to, and mamutas appear to keep a watchful eye over pikmin close by. If only we could communicate with mamutas, we could get along and learn a lot from each other!”
