The Puffstool is an enemy in Pikmin 1 that appears to be a huge walking fungus. It has a red capped mushroom head and a tender yellow torso which is vulnerable to swarming. Not much is scientifically known of it, but minimal details are supplied.
The Puffstool is a large sporovid with a tender yellow torso that is vulnerable to attack. The Puffstool will try to run when attacked, but its legs are clearly not made for sprinting, so it trips easily, landing on its head with its feet in the air. After a few seconds, the Puffstool will right itself and blow out a cloud of purplish spores. In p1, Pikmin exposed to its spores will become Mushroom Pikmin, which the Puffstool acts as a leader for, but in p4, exposed Pikmin will simply be confused.

The Puffstool will try to run when attacked, but its legs are clearly not made for sprinting and it trips easily, landing on its head with feet in the air. Since the cap is invulnerable to attack, Pikmin must be thrown onto its undersection once it's on the ground. After a few seconds, the Puffstool will right itself up and blow out a purplish cloud of spores which cause a strange change in nearby Pikmin, which the Puffstool acts as a Captain for. Affected Pikmin turn purple and grow small brown mushroom caps on their stalks. These Pikmin are known infamously as Mushroom Pikmin, Zombie pikmin, or Toadmin.

How to Kill
__TOC__
Mushroom Pikmin will attack Captain Olimar and any unaffected Pikmin. The effect will wear off in a short time, but more instantaneous remedies can also be used. Tossing a single Pikmin next to a Mushroom Pikmin will result in a small scuffle between the two, after which the enslaved Pikmin is knocked back to its senses and rejoins your army; using more Pikmin than necessary will more than likely kill the creature, counting towards your total number of Pikmin lost. A much safer strategy is attract the attention of multiple Mushroom Pikmin with your captain, then shake them off when they attack, instantly curing them without the risk of killing them. You can also get rid of the mushroom effect by killing the Puffstool.
clear

To minimize the risk of losing Pikmin, it is recommended to attack only with the captain. Furthermore, the Puffstool has no attacks that could harm Olimar. Note, however, that this may consume a fair amount of time, and as the sporing habits of the puffstool are fully predictable, having pikmin turned into toadmin is usually not a problem for competent players.

The Puffstool has an overwhelming weakness to fire in that its spores are highly flammable. When its spores are set ablaze, such as while the creature is scattering them, the Puffstool will begin to burn up with them, dealing heavy damage to it and leaving it greatly injured. The Puffstool is completely passive, and will not attack unless harmed first. However, most Puffstools have treasures in them, so they must fight to get them. If attacked, the Puffstool will attempt to shake off Pikmin swarming its feet. If attacked enough, however, the mushroom will flip over and become vulnerable for seven seconds. It will then right itself and release a cloud of spores around it. Any Pikmin that come in contact with these spores will become Mushroom Pikmin, which will serve the Puffstool and attack the captain and their Pikmin. Infected Pikmin that are shaken off or hit enough will be reverted back to their original state. Another spore attack the Puffstool wields is spinning around in a circle, scattering spores in a spiral formation. The leader should run away from the creature when it performs this attack. The Puffstool is a boss that appears in Pikmin: Infection in Progress and is fought in Fungal Grotto. It is encountered by destroying a large patch of Spotcaps and other mushrooms in the center of the back clearing. Once approached too closely, the Puffstool illuminates its antennae and springs to life, unearthing itself and then waddling around the area. The President can assist in carrying the remains of the Puffstool.

Appearances in other games
The Puffstool appears similarly to as it does in p1, although larger and more mature. Wrinkles and other growths are noticeable on its body, and its feet are larger.

In "The Legend Of Zelda: The Minish Cap" for the Gameboy Advance, Puffstools are enemies that are encountered in a dungeon known as the Deepwood Shrine. If the player does not kill the Puffstools, they will leave clouds of gold spores everywhere, which must be disposed of with an item known as the 'gust jar'. Their appearance has been slightly altered. They now have eyes, a white ring around the cap of the mushroom, are taller, and have bigger feet. They are about the same size as they are in Pikmin, since the player fights them only when the game's protagonist is shrunk to the size of a quarter.
During the fight, the Puffstool waddles about the clearing, crushing any Spotcaps in its path. It has more difficulty tripping because of more prominent and stable feet. The Puffstool also has the ability to produce spores while walking, along with the ability to do so while standing. On average, the Puffstool will trip and bowl over once or twice during the fight and will produce spores while doing so. It will also right itself sooner, usually in the direction of the Pikmin squad in an attempt to crush them. The boss can convert an entire army of Pikmin if one is not careful. When defeated, the Puffstool stumbles back and forth briefly until falling backwards, its body being pulled into the cap, and its antennae blinking rapidly before blackening altogether.

The Puffstool in Pikmin: Infinite Exploration appears similar to how it did in p1, but more akin to the Jestcap in shape and color. The Puffstool also acts similarly to its original incarnation but is first found hiding among Buttoncaps and Jestcaps. The distinctive way to tell a Puffstool from a Jestcap is the stem, which is not as yellow as a Puffstool's. Another way to tell the difference is that if a leader or a group of Pikmin brush up against the Puffstool, it will not wobble, unlike the Buttoncap and Jestcap. Once attacked the Puffstool will instantly come out of hiding and spray a cloud of spores, which will transform any Pikmin hit into Mushroom Pikmin. The best way to defeat a Puffstool is to first draw it out of hiding by punching it with a leader. After it has finished spraying its spores, rush it with a large group of Winged Pikmin as they can hit its stem even after it trips over.

In Redemption the puffstool is actually a boss and is quite hard. The how to kill section is above. Your reward, however, is a special egg that allows you to store 100 pikmin inside of it. The best part is that it is portable so you can take 200 pikmin with you to places without them being on the field. Cool, huh?

In Pikmin: Redemption, the Puffstool is a somewhat difficult boss. It can convert Pikmin into Mushroom Pikmin using spores in the form of a mist, or a spore bomb, which bursts into a cloud of spores. These Mushroom Pikmin are rabid and attack any normal Pikmin and leader in range, and die after some time.
