The Crested Mockiwi appears exclusively in the computer release of Pikmin Z. Much like other mockiwis, the Crested Mockiwi is a species that once evolved for flight but had lost its wings and evolved to occupy the niche of the grub-dog family. The Crested Mockiwi's behavior mirrors a typical Hairy Bulborb; Pikmin thrown onto its backside harmlessly bounce off. To hurt it, Pikmin must be thrown at its crest. Rock Pikmin are especially effective against it because they can hurt it from any point on its body. Its diet consists of small- to medium-sized animals, and it is preyed upon by the Spiked Mockiwi.

Attacks | Charges and eats Pikmin |
The Crested Mockiwi returns in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. They look the same as their original counterpart in Hey! Pikmin. The Mockiwi will patrol a set path, searching for any Pikmin there. If it spots Pikmin, it will emit a roar and charge at the group, scooping up Pikmin and eating them. There are many ways to foil the creature. Mainly, if a Pikmin is thrown on its signature pink crest, it will begin to try and shake the Pikmin off, allowing for the captains to attack it from behind. This means throwing a Dart Pikmin or Fur Pikmin at the crest is most effective. If led into a wall, the Mockiwi will smash its head into a wall and be stunned, allowing for a chance to attack. If the captain can't attack the creature, they can walk behind the Mockiwi, as the creature can not see from behind unless it turns around.
Notes
- Data file #1: Crested Mockiwis can be lead right into walls! Use this to stun them for an attack.
- Data file #2: Although very threatening, the Mockiwi's pink-crested feathers are their weak point!
Olimar's notes
- “Unlike its original yellow counterpart, this creature is rarely nocturnal. The Mockiwi will spend most of its day wandering around the area in search of food. Although this creature may be menacing, its pink crest serves as an evolutionary weak point. The Mockiwi can only produce one color pigment in its feathers. However, this species seems to possess the capability to produce two pigments instead, sporting much longer and pink feathers. Due to this, the body around said crest is much more sensitive. Even a single Pikmin can cause this creature to freak out.”
Louie's notes
- “The meat around the feathers is much more rich. If you wish to create juicy grilled steaks out of this creature drenched in A1 sauce, use this part of the meat instead.”
President’s notes
- “These weird bird things seem to have a good fashion sense on this planet. Maybe they could help me start a fashion business to make some extra money! I'd have to find a way to get them to stop eating me, however...”

The Crested Mockiwi appears in Pikmin: Spark, where they are encountered exclusively within dens. They behave similarly to normal Mockiwis, as they patrol a set area and attack anything that passes near and ignore them after they leave their eyesight. However, the hair of the Crested Mockiwi prevents the captains from tossing Pikmin from the front, meaning they have to attack the backside to damage it.
In ultra-spicy difficulty, it is faster, and may randomly dash forward while patrolling.
Notes
Abel's medical journal
- “The thick, stiff, frontal plumage of this species has a feel of plastic. Works well as a patient's mattress boxsprings.”
Lyn's sale review
- “The wax in this creature's hair can be peeled off and be sold as a hair gel.”
PIX's creature scan
- “Males of this species are highly aggressive and protective of their young. They have a tendency to charge anything even remotely close to said young, even if the attacker is twice their size.
- Habitat: dens
- Niche: herbivore
- Maturity age: 3 years
- Average lifespan: 10 years
- Breeding season: spring”
