The Vehemoth Phosbat is a large, bioluminescent moth-like creature that resides in dark caves, where it renders itself completely invisible to stalk prey undetected. With it are countless Phosbats, and several Common Glowcaps to provide light and therefore shelter from the phosbats. When near a Pikmin or leader, the Vehemoth Phosbat will reveal itself, open its mouth, and inhale furiously, creating a powerful vortex to trap them in and eat up to five Pikmin if not whistled to safety. When distressed, it frantically flaps its wings, releasing a cloud of panic-inducing particles from its hairs that chokes nearby Pikmin and causes them to scatter. When a light is activated near it, such as by having Yellow Pikmin complete an electrode circuit wired to an inactive light source, it will reveal itself and fall to the ground, blinded and helpless for a short time. When it rises off the ground again, it will not instantly go into its invisible state, so it is vulnerable for a few seconds more. When enough light sources are activated, the Vehemoth Phosbat will retaliate by roaring to activate the phosbat pods scattered about the chamber. After its entire arena is illuminated, it will be unable to turn invisible, and will occasionally retreat to a wall to rest, recovering a fraction of its health the first time it does this. Pikmin that are latched onto the resting creature will be thrown off when it prepares to take off, and throwing enough Pikmin onto its back as it flies will force it to the ground.

The Vehemoth Phosbat appears in Pikmin: Infection in Progress as the boss of Fungal Grotto. To encounter it, the the President must defeat all thirty-five Phosbats in the back-left clearing of the area. After this is done, the boss swoops down from the ceiling of the clearing and the fight commences.

The Vehemoth Phosbat's appearance is almost identical to that of its Pikmin 3 incarnation, but small, bright, multicolored spores litter its hair, and its yellow eyes glow in the dark.

In combat, the creature can not only inhale both Pikmin and the President but it can now crush them. Periodically, the Vehemoth Phosbat will become visible and swoop down to grab up to four Pikmin with its front paws and possibly eat any Pikmin thrown at its mouth. While distressed, it can spread toxic dust. When its health gets low enough, the Vehemoth Phosbat will periodically crashland, crushing any Pikmin underneath it and knocking back any Pikmin in front of or beside it, potentially depetaling them.
