Bomb rocks, also written as bomb-rocks, are explosive rocks with cracks through which glowing yellow and red energy flows. Upon being activated, such as by being hit or set down, a bomb rock will light up and emit a hiss until it eventually violently detonates, damaging Pikmin, leaders, enemies, and some obstacles. The explosions can trigger a chain reaction if they hit other bomb rocks. Some enemies utilize bomb rocks to their advantage, and some enemies also have notable interactions with bomb rocks, such as being able to eat them. Bomb rocks are the only means of taking down a reinforced gate.

In Pikmin 1, bomb rocks are slightly smaller than a Pikmin can be carried by Yellow Pikmin. A bomb rock explosion will instantly make all bomb rocks in the vicinity explode.

In Pikmin 2, bomb rocks are remarkably large, serving as obstacles more than tools, and can not be carried by Pikmin, only pushed around slowly by leaders and enemies. A bomb rock that gets hit by an explosion will only initiate its countdown. Throwing a Purple Pikmin directly on top of a bomb rock will make it explode instantly.

In Pikmin 3, bomb rocks are in between the sizes they were in the prequels and can be carried by any type of Pikmin. An explosion triggers a neighboring bomb rock's explosion in around half a second, resulting in quite a fast chain of explosions. Also, a bomb rock's explosion will instantly unearth a buried object in its range.

In Pikmin 4, bomb rocks are an inventory item that can be crafted with raw material, but can also still be found in the wilderness. They do not require Pikmin to use, as leaders and Oatchi can throw them much like they throw Pikmin.

Bomb rocks are items in Pikmin 2... Again?. They are unchanged for the most part, but there is a type named the bomb mad, which is based on the bomb rocks in Pikmin 2. Bomb mads are bomb rocks with glowing red interiors and are too large for Pikmin to wield effectively, and so can not be carried by them. Bomb rocks may be inside crates with "TNT" printed on them, which when hit by explosions, will explode alongside any adjacent TNT crates in a rapid chain reaction.

Bomb rocks appear in Pikmin Adventure, in both the small and large sizes. Small bomb rocks are found in piles of three, contribute to the bomb rock counter when collected, and can be thrown at enemies. The large ones appear as hazards and are the same as they are in Pikmin 2.

When riding a raft, the active leader will throw bomb rocks instead of the Pikmin. A new type of bomb rock, the supermassive bomb rock, appears in the Kingdom of the Insatiable Wyrm.

A bomb rock is an object in Pikmin: Wide World that can be of as much use as it can pose a threat. They are round, gray, bumpy rocks with narrow cracks running throughout their surface, revealing a glowing fiery yellow-orange core within. Bomb rocks may be of two sizes: small, the size they were in Pikmin 1, and large, the size they were in Pikmin 2. Small bomb rocks can be carried by Pikmin while large bomb rocks can be rolled around by exactly two. Leaders can carry one bomb rock at a time no matter its size, but large ones may slow them down slightly purely because of their size and weight. Bomb rocks almost always require the use of Rock Pikmin to reach initially, but they can also be found in very limited quantities outside of those situations.

The main use and danger of a bomb rock is its explosion. When lightly struck, such as from a sufficient tap or a kick, a bomb rock will become primed, the cracks on it snapping further apart with a crack; the core within glows progressively brighter over the course of ten seconds and grows slightly until it finally detonates, harming, killing, damaging, or destroying anything in the blast. Small bomb rocks produce smaller, weaker explosions of less outward force than large bomb rocks, but both are still equally deadly. Pikmin attack with bomb rocks mainly by throwing or shoving them, but can only merely shove large bomb rocks forward; leaders, however, can throw them regardless of their size. Various enemies can also utilize bomb rocks, but how they do so may vary. Many enemies that eat Pikmin can also eat bomb rocks, which will prime when bitten onto and subsequently explode in their stomachs. Setting a bomb rock down or leaving it set will not prime it, and subjecting a bomb rock to crushing and stabbing forces will cause it to detonate instantly. An explosion will cause any bomb rocks in the blast radius to instantly detonate, creating a destructive chain reaction when multiple bomb rocks are involved.

Some bomb rocks may be duds, indicated by a dark, black interior. They can not be primed, and when exposed to crushing and stabbing forces, simply break apart. Dud bomb rocks are most effective when handled as if they were rocks, and shatter after a single use. Active bomb rocks can be made into duds by exposing them to any type of fluid, most commonly water, in any way, with small bomb rocks becoming duds more easily than large bomb rocks.

In ultra-spicy difficulty, bomb rocks detonate after five seconds, and their explosions have slightly increased size and power. Additionally, enemies are more careful to not consume them and tend to keep away from them if they are aware of any nearby.
