What the–?! Floating eyeballs in the water...? The life on this planet surely is unusual... – The ship, upon discovering the Aquaoculus

The Aquaoculus is a new enemy that appears in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. Being much more radical than most water-dwelling creatures, the Aquaoculus will only appear in large bodies of water, the number of Aquaoculi increasing with the size of the pool. The Aquaoculus coexists peacefully with other enemies as it floats harmlessly in the water. The creature itself resembles a small eyeball, around the size of a Wogpole. The Aquaoculus consists of one flattish eyeball with a white sclerae and a dark marine-blue pupil. The sides of the sclerae have more of a reddish hue with slightly visible veins. On the bottom and sides of the Aquaoculus, a coat of soft, yellow fur surrounds the eyeball as it swims around, the fur being hydrophobic, which allows for the eyeball to float on the water.

The Aquaoculus is a harmless creature, preferring to swim around aimlessly on the surface of pools. The sporadic movements of the creature heavily resemble the speed and edginess of a Skeeterskate. If approached by any Pikmin or captains, the Aquaoculus will perform a slight jump before speeding away from the squad. After it manages to get far away enough, it will slow down before stopping to rest. If constantly pursued, it may stop for a few seconds, allowing for attack. Constantly pursuing the Aquaoculus is futile, however, as the eyeball's extremely fast speed will leave any pursuers in the dust. If near other enemies, like creatures in the onionshell family or amphituber family, the Aquaoculus will deliberately swim behind them to lead the captains and Pikmin into danger, inadvertently allowing for the eyeball to escape its pursuers. If the pool of water the Aquaoculus is in is drained by destroying a clog or any other method, the Aquaoculus will become beached along with any other aquatic enemies. However, the creature can still scuttle away on its thick coat of fur, but its speed is much slower on land, only going around half speed. If beached, the creature will seek nearby pools of water to swim in.

Trying to defeat an Aquaoculus is much harder than it seems. No matter how many Pikmin are sent at the creature, they will inevitably be outrun by it. Blue Pikmin and Winged Pikmin are futile in trying to take out an Aquaoculus. However, throwing a Blue Pikmin at the Aquaoculus will allow it to latch on and do significant damage. They may be shaken off if the creature jumps into the air, however. The best way to take out an Aquaoculus is by sending an Iguana Pikmin to the edge of the water. Due to its range, it can send its tongue out and grab the Aquaoculus with it, jerking it out of the water and onto land. This is the easiest and most efficient way of defeating the creature. Dart Pikmin can instantly kill an Aquaoculus, like most eyebulbs, and Cactus Pikmin can do significant damage to the family's members. When defeated, the Aquaoculus will lose all of its fur and shrivel up, allowing for it to be collected. However, the reward from an Aquaoculus is very measly, not being worth the effort. Killing an Aquaoculus with a Dart Pikmin for the first time will unlock the "Wet Bullseye" achievement.

In Overlord mode, the Aquaoculus will appear in much larger groups. Along with this, they move slightly faster and are much faster when turning and skittering around. They are also slightly faster on land and have a bit more health.

Olimar's notes

Being an extremely radical aquatic creature, the Aquaoculus can be found in large pools of water. Due to lacking any orifice for consumption, the creature mainly feeds on two food sources: sunlight, and microscopic zooplankton. The zooplankton are absorbed by the filtering fur of the creature, and the eyeball absorbs rays from the sun for energy, similar to photosynthesis. The coating around an Aquaoculus consists of extremely hydrophobic fur, allowing for the small organism to skate around the water with ease.

Louie's notes

These small creatures have similar vitamins and minerals to the eggs we have at home, so I recommend frying this creature over easy with a dousing of hot sauce! They make for a very hearty breakfast!

President’s notes

Hydrophobic fur...? Maybe we could give this to our non-Blue Pikmin and allow them to walk on the water! Or I could make it into a wig... That is the most important goal!! The Pikmin can learn how to swim!
