The Arboreal Whiptongue Bulborb is an enemy in Pikmin: Interstellar Cryptid. It resembles a minuscule Whiptongue Bulborb of incredibly small size comparable to a breadbug mimic rather than a common grub-dog. It has an extra pair of legs that allow it to crawl like a gecko and climb trees. It also possesses a pelt of fur that obscures its backside, with tan colors and dark patterns. It very much resembles a tamandua, living in an environment similar to it. Its actual skin is of a tan color. Despite its size, its tongue is surprisingly lengthy, spanning multiple times its body length. It uses this advantage to hunt, and remains hidden out of view on tree branches.

Its tongue dangles from above, waiting for Pikmin to brush against it. This makes them get stuck to the tongue, as it slowly begins to reel into its mouth. To gain the upper hand against the creature, throw Pikmin at its tongue, and they'll latch onto the tongue to pull the Arboreal Whiptongue Bulborb off of its perch. The creature will be left helpless, scuttering across the ground and occasionally using its slurping tongue like its terrestrial counterpart. Despite its size, it can not be squashed like the breadbug counterparts it is comparable in size to.

Notes

Olimar's notes

Much like the tactical bulberret, the arboreal whiptongue bulborb has a unique second pair of legs that open up possibilities for hunting in the trees. It often uses the flexible tongue whiptongue bulborbs are known for to reach small grubs and worms living under the bark. However, many of the more girthy items of prey live on the ground, where the creature has a disadvantage against them should they fight back. As such, it waits from the trees above and uses its tongue, which can span several feet in spite of its size, to catch hold of any small creatures that get too curious and prod at it, thinking it's a worm. Periodically, the creature must reel its tongue back in to make sure the tongue doesn't dry up, leading to potential injury.

Louie's notes

Pickle the tongue, or at least as much of the tongue one can fit, in a jar of vinegar. Take the creature itself and slice a shank off of its hindquarters. Pan fry in olive oil with sliced tomatoes and mushrooms, and put on a plate with its pickled tongue.

Bentley's notes

The grub-dog family is one of the most impressive in the eyes of me and many others. How could one taxonomic group display traits of so many others? It is for this reason that Eloise and I have fallen in love with PNF-404; it is truly unlike any other.

Eloise's notes

Its tongue is bright and pink, like this one candy we have back at Nijo. But eating this one will lead to something that is much less sweet... Actually, come to think of it, the candy itself is also pretty sour. This might be a poor comparison...
