Pikmin: Wide World is a non-canon Pikmin game concept currently being developed by Cheepy-Cheepy, and is the sequel to Pikmin 3. Although the graphics and gameplay of Pikmin: Wide World are similar to that of Pikmin 3's, the game combines mechanics and features of the three main Pikmin games as well as Hey! Pikmin in such a way that it provides the classic feel of a standard Pikmin title. To further expand the game's content, Pikmin: Wide World incorporates various elements that are not canonical to the Pikmin games, with some being enemies and items. Pikmin: Wide World also introduces new mechanics and features not seen in other Pikmin games.

Friendly Pikmin

Although many Pikmin types return in Pikmin: Wide World, a single new type is discovered: Green Pikmin, which are resistant to acid. Pikmin are listed in the order of discovery:

Yellow Pikmin

Main article: Yellow Pikmin

Yellow Pikmin are immune to electricity and can conduct it as well. They are the first Pikmin type discovered in Pikmin: Wide World, and they are found in Balmy Highlands.

Blue Pikmin

Main article: Blue Pikmin

Blue Pikmin can survive in water, unlike most other Pikmin types. They are discovered in Arid Oasis.

Red Pikmin

Main article: Red Pikmin

Red Pikmin, known for their high damage output and resistance to fire, are the third Pikmin type discovered in Pikmin: Wide World. They are found in Frigid Tundra.

Purple Pikmin

Main article: Purple Pikmin

The strongest Pikmin of all, Purple Pikmin, are first discovered in Ancient Metalworks. They have no particular immunities, but they can lift the weight of ten Pikmin.

Green Pikmin

Main article: Green Pikmin

'Green Pikmin make an appearance in Pikmin: Wide World and are discovered in Ancient Metalworks. Green Pikmin are the second Pikmin type to be discovered in Ancient Metalworks, and for good reason: they can survive the acid that some enemies utilize, as well as the pools of acid that appear in the area.

Rock Pikmin

Main article: Rock Pikmin

Rock Pikmin are the third and final Pikmin type discovered in Ancient Metalworks. They have a high damage output much like Red Pikmin and Purple Pikmin, but cannot cling onto objects or enemies. Rock Pikmin can also be used to destroy crytal objects.

White Pikmin

Main article: White Pikmin

White Pikmin are the fastest of any known Pikmin type, and are known for poisoning enemies that eat them. They are able to see and dig up buried objects, examples being some fruits and treasures. White Pikmin are discovered in Mycelial Sepulcher, and are the second-to-last Pikmin to be discovered in Pikmin: Wide World.

Winged Pikmin

Main article: Winged Pikmin

Winged Pikmin are the final Pikmin type discovered in Pikmin: Wide World, and are found in Endless Sea.

Hostile Pikmin

Hostile Pikmin are Pikmin that attack leaders and even other Pikmin that come to close to them. They ignore any attempts of being whistled at and will continue attacking until they are subdued.

Mushroom Pikmin

Main article: Mushroom Pikmin

Mushroom Pikmin return from Pikmin 1 and are only ever encountered in Mycelial Sepulcher, usually accompanying a Puffstool. Mushroom Pikmin found in the wild never count towards total Pikmin deaths or the limit of on-field Pikmin, but Pikmin that are converted do count as deaths, even before they are disposed of. Pikmin that are converted into Mushroom Pikmin never revert back to normal and must be put out of their misery. Mushroom Pikmin retain the qualities of the Pikmin they once were, including strength, speed, physical characteristics, and resistances. Parasitic Pikmin are capable of being transformed into Mushroom Pikmin as well.

Parasitic Pikmin

Although they are never truly seen, parasitic Pikmin are known for infecting larger hosts and controlling them to survive. They cannot be brought to the surface, and have no special resistances or a specific Onion to be stored in; because of this, they are instead used as a sort of fodder Pikmin. However, they are exceptionally useful combat-wise. When tasked with demolishing an obstacle or led into an enemy, parasitic Pikmin will attack it their stems like an ordinary Pikmin. Parasitic Pikmin can be found on the surface, but appear more commonly underground. Hosts can also be found sleeping instead of wandering. Their stems glow green while idle. Adults are aggressive and nearly always found leading a group of passive juveniles; the former must be defeated before the latter may join a leader's squad. Several hosts for parasitic Pikmin exist, each being listed below:

  • Red Bulbmin: Returns from Pikmin 2, and is the most basic type of Bulbmin. Juvenile Red Bulbmin, like other juvenile grub-dog hosts, bite enemies they are thrown onto, latching onto them and causing severe damage until they are shaken off.
  • Orange Bulbmin: Detects enemies and prey from farther away.
  • Hairy Bulbmin: Hairless juveniles cower behind the leader they are following when an enemy draws near. Often found in cold areas.
  • Spotty Bulbearmin: Detects enemies from a much larger distance than Orange Bulbmin can, and breaks free from the group to attack an enemy that gets too close.
  • Snagmin:

Characters

Pikmin: Wide World does not introduce any new characters, but some characters do make a reappearance:

Captain Olimar

Main article: Captain Olimar

Captain Olimar, the heroic Hocotation who first led the Pikmin to become a force to be reckoned with, returns to PNF-404 alongside Shacho. Olimar is the same as always and writes notes detailing the biology of the lifeforms of the alien planet he is all too familiar with.

The President

Main article: The President

The President of Hocotate Freight, who is referred to as Shacho for the sake of convenience, joins Captain Olimar to revisit PNF-404 in search of riches. Shacho records notes about PNF-404's lifeforms that make his greed blatantly obvious, writing about how to squeeze the most Pokos from everything on the planet.

Louie

Main article: Louie

Although Louie was stranded once more on the Pikmin Planet at the end of Pikmin 3, he can be found and be made into a third leader after he is rescued. He still possesses his voracious appetite and superior culinary skills, and he will record notes detailing how to prepare and cook various creatures and vegetation once he is unlocked.

Ships

One ship reappears in Pikmin: Wide World:

Hocotate ship

Main article: Hocotate ship

The Hocotate ship is the ship used by Captain Olimar and Shacho to explore PNF-404 in search of riches beyond belief. This Hocotate ship is the same golden ship used by the same pair when Hocotate Freight's ten thousand Poko debt is paid off. Although the red and white Hocotate ship used by Olimar and Louie is seen wrecked nearby where the Quaggled Mireclops resided, this is not the same ship and is instead the one Shacho trusted the two employees would not destroy. The Hocotate ship still retains its pompous and quirky personality as well.

Caves

Main article: Cave

Caves make a return from Pikmin 2 and appear in Pikmin: Wide World, serving the same purpose as they did in the past. Caves are underground areas that can be accessed from various holes in the ground of certain regions of aboveground areas, and generally contain just as many treasures and fruits as they do enemies and hazards. Plants are also often found in caves, matching the theme of the sublevel they are on. Various objects and enemies may also fall from the ceilings of caves. All caves can be exited using an escape geyser that is present on the bottommost sublevel of a cave, although escape geysers may also be found on rest sublevels. Some escape geysers must be activated by having Pikmin attack them before they may be used.

Every cave sublevel in Pikmin: Wide World utilizes one of several themes, some returning from '"Pikmin 2. Although themes are usually consistent for the entirety of a cave, some can vary. Some themes can also be mixed together. They usually match the environment in which the cave's entrance was discovered. The following is a list of cave themes appearing in Pikmin: Wide World, organized by alphabetical order:

  • Concrete: Features sandy floors and concrete walls, with concrete floors sometimes as well.
  • Metal: Has metal floors and low walls, which makes it possible to throw Pikmin and lead some enemies to their demise. Mechanical enemies are common in this cave theme.
  • Snow: Very similar to the cave theme of soil, but has snow covering the floor and walls. This cave theme is only ever encountered in Frigid Tundra, and only on the first few sublevels of a cave before it transitions into the soil theme. Rocks are sometimes present in these caves to break up the monotony of the dirt.
  • Soil: A very basic and simple cave theme that possesses dirt floors and walls. Rocks are sometimes present in these caves to break up the monotony of the dirt.
  • Tiles: Blue bathroom tiles cover nearly the whole sublevel. Water is a frequent hazard in this cave theme.

On top of sublevels having themes they are based around, two different cave styles exist in Pikmin: Wide World:

Perilous caves

Perilous caves are caves filled with danger but also contain the most rewards. They may have quite many sublevels to explore before finally reaching the boss lurking in the cave's farthest reaches. Some caves contain "rest sublevels", of which are comparable to tranquil caves in that they can house no enemies, many harmless enemies, or few low-risk enemies.

Tranquil caves

Tranquil caves are caves that are composed of a single sublevel, which is usually populated by harmless enemies or enemies that are easy to kill, provided there are any enemies present within the cave at all. Tranquil caves contain few treasures and fruits, but are worth exploring regardless.

Treasures

Main article: Treasure

Treasures make a reappearance in Pikmin: Wide World from Pikmin 2 and are once again used to acquire vast quantities of Pokos. Additionally, treasures contain larger quantities of Sparklium than most other objects do, which is needed to fuel the Hocotate ship. Unlike in Pikmin 2's story mode, where every treasure appears only once and is never encountered again, treasures discovered in Pikmin: Wide World can be repeatedly encountered and collected. Every treasure in Pikmin: Wide World also has several unique looks for each treasure to keep the game fresh. No artificial or processed food treasures exist in Pikmin: Wide World, as the creatures who made them are long gone at the time the game takes place. Fruits are not considered treasures in Pikmin: Wide World, as they have a more prominent purpose.

Nuggets

Main article: Nugget

Although not exactly treasures, nuggets are valuables that return in Pikmin: Wide World from Pikmin 3 and come in three different types: copper, silver, and gold. Nuggets, each of which requiring a single Pikmin to carry them, come in piles and each type of nugget has differing Poko values and Sparklium worths. They can be found both aboveground and in caves, either in the open, within large crystals, or from dirt piles. Essentially, nuggets can be found almost anywhere. The higher the tier of the nugget, the rarer they are and the smaller piles of them are. The following is a detailed list of the existing nugget types:

  • Copper nuggets, which each are worth P2 Poko icon.png × 5 and contain HP Sparklium icon.png × 5 (HP Sparklium icon.png × 10 with the Sparklium Extractor).
  • Silver nuggets, each worth P2 Poko icon.png × 10 and containing HP Sparklium icon.png × 7 (HP Sparklium icon.png × 14 with the Sparklium Extractor).
  • Gold nuggets, each of which are worth P2 Poko icon.png × 15 and contain HP Sparklium icon.png × 10 (HP Sparklium icon.png × 20 with the Sparklium Extractor).

Fruits

Main article: Fruit

Fruits make a return from Pikmin 3 to appear in Pikmin: Wide World is a pivotal gameplay element once again. Fruits must be collected for the continued survival of the leaders, who feed on the juice they contain. As such, they are no longer considered treasures. Fruits have no Poko value, but they do contain traces of Sparklium, another important gameplay element. Much like common treasures, the amount of fruits currently in existence is infinite.

Sparklium

Main article: Sparklium

Sparklium returns from Hey! Pikmin to serve as a pivotal gameplay mechanic in Pikmin: Wide World. The Hocotate ship requires Sparklium to perform certain tasks such as blasting off at the end of the day or restoring a leader's health. The Hocotate ship requires HP Sparklium icon.png × 250 each nigh to blast off, but the Sparklium Saver reduces that cost to a mere HP Sparklium icon.png × 125. Sparklium can be obtained from a variety of sources, some of them being fruits, treasures, and Sparklium seeds. Fruits contain very little Sparklium, while treasures and Sparklium stones contain the most. The larger and stronger the enemy, the higher of a chance of it having swallowed a higher-tier Sparklium seed.

Sparklium seeds

As the name suggests, Sparklium seeds are collectibles that contain large amounts of Sparklium. Sparklium seeds can be found aboveground and underground, within large crystals, or from any enemy that may cough up one or more upon its defeat. They can be found almost anywhere, much like nuggets, but around more commonly found aboveground than in caves. They can be brought to the Hocotate ship so it can extract the Sparklium they contain. There are three types of Sparklium seeds:

  • Yellow Sparklium seeds, which each contain HP Sparklium icon.png × 5 (HP Sparklium icon.png × 10 with the Sparklium Extractor). Each one requires a single Pikmin to carry it, with a maximum of three Pikmin. They are the smallest and most common type of Sparklium seed.
  • Red Sparklium seeds, each containing HP Sparklium icon.png × 25 (HP Sparklium icon.png × 50 with the Sparklium Extractor). Each one requires at least three Pikmin to carry it, with a maximum of six Pikmin. Red Sparklium seeds are uncommon and are noticeably larger than yellow Sparklium seeds.
  • Rainbow Sparklium seeds, each of which contains HP Sparklium icon.png × 50 (HP Sparklium icon.png × 100 with the Sparklium Extractor). Each one requires at least six Pikmin to carry it, with a maximum of twelve. Rainbow Sparklium Seeds are the largest and rarest of their kind.

Sparklium stones

Sparklium stones are similar to Sparklium seeds yet are slightly different. Sparklium stones are only ever found in the open and are never found within large crystals or enemies. They also have a much higher chance of appearing in caves than in aboveground areas. Sparklium stones differ from Sparklium seeds in that Sparklium stones must be destroyed and cannot be carried by Pikmin, only pushed around. Sparklium stones can be weaponized by both leaders, who can pick them up and throw them just like they can with bomb-rocks, and some enemies such as Skutterchucks, that will pick them up and chuck them at its aggressors. Upon being hit enough, a Sparklium stone will eventually break open and drop its payload of Sparklium, disappearing in the process. Because Sparklium stones cannot be taken in by the Hocotate ship, the Sparklium they contain cannot be doubled with the use of the Sparklium Extractor. Three different types of Splarklium stones exist, mirroring the types of Sparklium seeds that exist:

  • Yellow Sparklium stones, which each contain HP Sparklium icon.png × 20. They are the easiest of the Sparklium stones to break open and are the most common type.
  • Red Sparklium stones, each containing HP Sparklium icon.png × 60. They are uncommon and are a bit more difficult to destroy than yellow Sparklium stones.
  • Rainbow Sparklium stones, each of which contains HP Sparklium icon.png × 120. They are the rarest variety of Sparklium stone and the most difficult to break open, but the efforts to do so are well-rewarded.

Upgrades

Area unlocks

All upgrades that unlock areas are in the form of microSD cards, which, when brought to the Hocotate ship, unlock a new area that may be explored the following day. As Balmy Highlands is the starting area, it does not have a respective data chip that unlocks it.

Exploration Kit

The Exploration Kit in Pikmin: Wide World consists of upgrades that benefit leaders only; ship parts (listed below this section) also benefit leaders but are applied to the Hocotate ship instead. The Exploration Kit includes some upgrades from previous games in the Pikmin series, namely Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3, but also includes some original upgrades as well. Upgrades are not obtained from treasures like they are in Pikmin 3, but instead appear as the upgrade itself encased in a small plastic capsule that must be carried to the Hocotate ship to be unlocked. Most upgrades are found setting around various areas, but some other upgrades are only dropped by bosses. Each Exploration Kit upgrade requires at least fifteen Pikmin to carry it, and a maximum of twenty-five can be carrying it at once. All upgrades can be toggled on or off from the main menu. The list of upgrades is as follows:

  • Treasure Gauge: Returns from Pikmin 2, and once more appears on the heads-up display. As the name implies, this upgrade helps leaders locate treasures. The closer a leader comes to a treasure, be it out in the open, buried in the ground, ingested by an enemy, or so on, the Treasure Gauge will begin to flash more intensely and beep louder and more frequently. The needle on the device also turns to the right more the closer a leader is to a treasure.
  • Fruit Finder: Works in almost the same way as the Treasure Gauge, but detects fruits instead of treasures. As with the Treasure Gauge, it appears on the heads-up display. It will detect fruits that are out in the open, buried in the ground, inside of an enemy, etcetera. The other differences between the Fruit Finder and the Treasure Gauge are that the Fruit Finder flashes pink and that the beeping noise it makes is lower-pitched and riddled with static.
  • Scorch Guard: Provides an 80% decrease in damage from fire or fire-related attacks.
  • Anti-Electrifier: Provides an 80% decrease in damage from electricity or electricity-related attacks.
  • Toxin Filter: Allows leaders to walk through clouds of poison without being harmed by it. Unlike in Pikmin 2, leaders steadily take damage from a poison cloud for as long as they linger in it.
  • Metal Suit Z: Provides a 50% decrease in damage from physical attacks such as being bitten or being crushed.
  • Mega Punch: Increases the damage of all punches delivered by 3%, and allows leaders to deliver a devastating third punch when delivering consecutive punches that does 5% more damage.
  • Zip Kicks: Increases the movement speed of leaders by .25%.
  • Artificial Fins: Allows leaders to swim underwater, similarly to Blue Pikmin.
  • Illustrous Illuminator: Provides more light than a leader's beacons would normally produce, and as such, it greatly improves vision in dark environments such as caves or areas after sundown. It extends the radius of light given off by a leader's beacon by 3x.
  • Dodge Whistle: Allows leaders and Pikmin they are commanding to quickly evade enemy attacks during battle. When used by pressing WiiU Padleftright.png, leaders and grounded Pikmin following them will perform a forward roll in the direction pressed.
  • Whistle Silencer: One of the several new mechanics in Pikmin: Wide World is enemies being able to hear a leader's whistle, which is where this upgrade is useful. When obtained, enemies will no longer be able to hear the whistle and thus cannot be alerted of their presence before they are seen. However, an enemy will still hear the whistle if it is blown by a leader who is very close to one.
  • Mega Tweeter: Returns from Pikmin 2, and functions identically. It extends both the horizontal and vertical range of the leaders' whistles by 2x.
  • Pluckaphone: Returns from Pikmin 2, and functions identically. It allows leaders to pluck Pikmin sprouts from the ground by simply whistling at them.

Ship parts

Unlike the ship parts in Pikmin 1 that are used to rebuild the S.S. Dolphin, the ship parts in Pikmin: Wide World are instead used to upgrade the Hocotate ship. There are only a few ship parts to collect, but each of them greatly benefits the leaders. They are as follows:

  • Repair Module: Allows leaders to repair their spacesuits by standing in front of the Hocotate ship, on the hologram it casts on the ground, and pressing WiiU A.png. Healing uses an amount of Sparklium that scales up with how much health is going to be recovered, however, with HP Sparklium icon.png × 25 being used to restore a quarter of a leader's health. The Sparklium Saver may be used to reduce the Sparklium used by half, rounded down, to HP Sparklium icon.png × 10.
  • Sparklium Extractor: Doubles the amount of Sparklium obtained from any resource that is brought to the ship. This includes but isn't limited to: fruits, treasures, and of course, Sparklium seeds.
  • Sparklium Saver: Halves the amount of Sparklium the Hocotate ship uses for any task.

Enemies

In Pikmin: Wide World, almost every enemy from the canonical Pikmin games returns. Some of these enemies also have different behaviors between instances. Some canonical enemies also have different names or belong to different families. Mixed in with these canon enemies are fan-made enemies to not only provide a nostalgic experience, but also to provide a fresh new feel to the game. Enemies too give Sparklium upon death, although in miniscule amounts. Bold font is used to indicate the enemy being a boss, which usually is an enemy that is large and challenging to defeat.

Varying values

Almost every numeric aspect of Pikmin: Wide World varies in some way, shape, or form to keep the game fresh. It affects only a non-unique object's carry weight, maximum carriers, Poko values, and Sparklium worth. These values may be decreased or increased a set number of integers and entirely depends on the non-unique object's statistics. For example, if a non-unique object's carry weight, maximum carriers, Poko value, or Sparklium worth values are at or below ten, they will seldom be changed, and if they are they increment one value up; however, any carry weight or maximum carriers values that equal one will never change. If those values are in the range of numbers between eleven and twenty, they have a very slight but still increased chance to change, although those values will still only decrease or increase by one. This pattern continues with higher numbers, and the higher the numbers go, the higher the chance of a variance occurring and the higher the severity of the variance. Fruits and the juice they provide are also affected by this system. All values listed for non-unique objects on this page are the average values obtained for each of the objects they affect.

Other new features

  • Leaders can pick up and carry bomb-rocks and Sparklium stones, throwing or dropping them if they need to. Throwing a bomb-rock will cause its timer to start, and throwing a Sparklium stone will damage it as well as the enemies it lands on. Setting either of them down with WiiU B.png will not result in any changes in the objects other than them being relocated.
  • Leaders that have been absorbed by a creature such as a Jellyfloat or Slurker cannot be switched to until they are freed.
  • Leaders, Pikmin, and objects that have been absorbed by an enemy like the Medusal Slurker than cannot digest them will still have them trapped within itself the following day if they are not saved. Leaders that are captured, but not rescued on the same day, will have critical health levels when rescued the day after. Pikmin that are not rescued on the same day they are captured will revert to the leaf stage. Leaders that are left within the creature for longer than a day will be knocked out and be unusable for the rest of the day if the area is visited again. If the area is not revisited, the captured leader will remain in this state and still have to be saved. Pikmin that are trapped for longer than a day will perish.
  • Enemies will intentionally avoid hazards that may damage them. An example of this would be a Red Bulborb walking around an active electrical wire while in pursuit of Pikmin. The only two exceptions to this rule are if the hazard is shallow-enough water, and if the enemy traveling through the hazard utilizes it.
