The Vehemoth Phosbat is a large, bioluminescent moth-like creature with massive orange wings, yellow eyes, small stumpy limbs, and a large gaping whale-like mouth. Vehemoth Phosbats reside in expansive and dark caves that are populated by countless Phosbats and contain several Common Glowcaps, the latter of which acting as the area's only sources of light. In this darkness, the Phosbat is invisible and it will quietly move throughout the area to stalk its prey, only revealing itself when it tries to inhale Pikmin and leaders. To stun the Phosbat, a bright light must be activated close by the creature. This is usually done by having Yellow Pikmin or a similar Pikming type complete the circuit of an electrode wired to an initially inactive light source, which will force the creature to reveal itself and fall to the ground, blinded and helpless. However, the Phosbat will retaliate by summoning its young, the Phosbats, to defend it from its attackers. Its young can eat one Pikmin at a time but are slow and easy to kill.

The Vehemoth Phosbat has two attacks at its disposal:
*It can become visible and create a vortex in which Pikmin and leaders will be trapped. From there, it will suck a few of the Pikmin into its mouth and they will be eaten. Pikmin trapped in the vortex can be whistled at repeatedly and saved.
*After being attacked, it will rise back into the air and scatter a cloud of poison-like dust around it. This will choke Pikmin for a brief period, but will not kill them.

The Phosbats are spawned from large egg sac-like objects that are placed throughout the area called Phosbat Pods, which can be destroyed to prevent further spawning of Phosbats. The Vehemoth Phosbat will relentlessly follow anything that has attacked its young. The Common Glowcaps can be hidden under, which will deter it from approaching closer to its prey.

Activating a light source large enough to illuminate the entire cave will stun the Vehemoth Phosbat and render it incapable of becoming invisible. Throwing Pikmin onto its back will weigh it down and force it to the ground. After it gets back up, it will release a cloud of toxic powder that chokes all nearby Pikmin. During this time, it will make use of its distraction and retreat onto a wall in the cave to rest and regenerate health. Pikmin that are latched onto the resting creature will be thrown off when it prepares to take off.

Upon its defeat, the boss will fall to the ground and writhe in pain, coughing up any valuables it had swallowed just before its life finally ends.

The Vehemoth Phosbat returns in Pikmin: Infection in Progress as a boss appearing in the back-left clearing of Fungal Grotto. To fight it, the President must defeat all thirty-five Phosbats in the back-left clearing. After this is done, the boss swoops down from the ceiling of the clearing and the boss fight commences. The President can assist in carrying the corpse of the Vehemoth Phosbat.
Appearance
The Vehemoth Phosbat's appearance is almost identical to its appearance in Pikmin 3. Minor differences exist, however: small, bright, multicolored spores litter its hair, and its yellow eyes now glow in the dark.
Combat
The Vehemoth Phosbat has more attacks than it possessed in Pikmin 3. Not only can it inhale both Pikmin and leaders, but it can now crush Pikmin, as well as deal substantial damage to the President. Now and again, the Vehemoth Phosbat will become visible and swoop down to grab up to four Pikmin with its talons and possibly eat any Pikmin at it mouth. As it could in Pikmin 3, the Vehemoth Phosbat can spread toxic dust when in distress. When its health gets low enough, the Vehemoth Phosbat will crash-land, crushing any Pikmin underneath of it and knocking back any Pikmin in front of or beside it, potentially deflowering them. The Vehemoth Phosbat typically crash-lands once or twice during the fight.
