The Pearly Clamclamp is an enemy in the Pikmin 1 game. This large bivalve has a pinkish shell and a small pearl surrounded by a clear blue membrane. When Pikmin are thrown on it, which is a grueling task, they will attack the membrane to reveal the pearl, but meanwhile the Clamclamp will stretch its mouth wide open, creaking like a poorly-oiled hinge, and chomp. When it does this, you need to have excellent timing and call the Pikmin so they won't be eaten. This is obviously a very simple predatory tactic for the creature. You will have to sum up the remaining skill in you to destroy the membrane and get the 50 Pikmin prize without losing any Pikmin. If the Clamclamp is on land, two bomb rocks can also be used for a quick and easy kill. This creature is one of the two second leading creatures in Pikmin production, succeeded by the Smoky Progg (100 Pikmin) and tied by the Armored Cannon Beetle.

Brackish water flowing in from estuaries or other naturally occurring filters will most likely contain one or a group of these elusive bivalves. The Clamclamp's mantle only ever forms the top half of its shell; the bottom half shelters a tongue that, when the shell is shut, dissolves nutrients and absorbs them into an inner digestive system. Thus, the lustrous pearl can only ever form when an irritant is covered in the nacreous layers of the top shell, making this Clamclamp half as likely to produce a pearl as its deep-sea counterpart. Once a pearl is a sufficient burden on the top shell's hinging action, the Pearly Clamclamp will dislodge the pearl with acids from its stomach. The pearl rests safely on the creature's tongue, acting as both an prey motion detector and an aid to breaking down food. No other member of the Mollusking family appears to make use of its natural by-products so efficiently.

Behavior

Most Games
This creature idles with its shell open, revealing its encased pearl. When Pikmin attack its pearl it will open even wider, in preparation to close its shell. Any Pikmin caught in its shell will be chewed and eaten. Upon breaking the pearl's barrier, the pearl will break out of the Pearly Clamclamp's mouth, but the creature will still be alive.
Pikmin Forever
While always appearing around or in water bodies, their exact positions are not constant from day to day. After dislodging a pearl, the Clamclamp will not produce another until 5-6 days later; it will remain pearl-less until that time. It cannot be defeated by bomb-rock, when it senses an active bomb-rock near it will close its shell and, if the bomb-rock is inside it, the bomb-rock will deactivate and rest on the Clamclamp's tongue when it opens its mouth again.

Strategy to defeat

Most Games
Throw Pikmin at its pearl so they can break the barrier around it. But be sure to call the Pikmin back before the Clamclamp shuts its shell.
