The Frozen Fen, also known by Yuki's name for it, “Ice Skating World”, is the sixth area in Pikmin: Antarctic Survival. This area is known for the presence of its unique resource, grass goop, which can only be found here. This area also is covered in frozen bodies of water which form sheets of ice, and patches of unstable snowy terrain known as “quicksnow.”

This area is fairly dangerous due to the patches of its quicksnow hazards. Quicksnow looks very similar to regular snow, which covers the area as it does the rest of the Antarctic. The only visual differences between quicksnow and typical snow require experience and familiarity to observe. Quicksnow patches often appear slightly sunken into the ground compared to the surrounding snow, and regularly form faint concentric circle patterns on the surface of the snow, though these patterns are not clearly visible and cannot be noticed at a glance. Any creature that steps into a patch of quicksnow will become trapped and begin to sink, unless the creature is incredibly light and thus less dense than the patch of quicksnow.

A creature that falls into quicksnow will quickly find that the substance, though it looks like snow, feels nothing like regular snow. Quicksnow's consistency is that of a viscous liquid that pulls anything in it deeper the more they struggle. As a result, the best way to avoid sinking below the surface and suffocating inside of it is actually to resist the instinct to struggle, as this will only cause a creature to become more thoroughly entrapped in it. Instead, the only way to escape quicksnow is to move slowly and calmly to the edge of the patch and then pull oneself back onto solid snow. This is quite difficult, especially for heavier creatures such as arachnorbs which will find that quicksnow does not want to give up its grip on them. Traveling creatures in the Frozen Fen are highly recommended to travel in groups, as if one creature becomes trapped in quicksnow, it is much easier to escape if the other creatures that are not trapped in the quicksnow can help pull them back onto land.

Flying creatures and very light creatures such as Skitter Leaves do not need to take nearly as many precautions in the region, as flying creatures can simply hover over quicksnow and avoid coming into contact with it, and light creatures can “swim” over the surface of the quicksnow, due to their low density. A group of creatures especially skilled at detecting and avoiding quicksnow is the aristocrab subfamily, which can usually identify quicksnow from a distance and thus are much less likely to fall into it. If an Aristocrab does fall into a patch of quicksnow, these creatures also know how to safely escape it, understanding how to move within it and knowing that struggling is dangerous.

Layout

The Frozen Fen has an unusual “layered” layout, with different “plates” of terrain at different elevations, and snowy edges connecting them. This is somewhat similar to the watery areas of the Forest Naval, which are located at different heights and feature slight drops from higher plates to lower ones. These edges can make it difficult for shorter creatures to travel through the area since they cannot climb up the ledges, though larger and taller creatures, such as those of adult grub-dog size or larger, can easily walk up the ledges. Smaller creatures will need to find alternate methods to reach higher “plates”, such as locating occasional snowy “ramps” which connect the areas of different elevations.

Much of the surface of the Frozen Fen consists of slick patches of ice, which is slippery and difficult to travel over without falling. Many of the ice patches are frozen on top of lakes of liquid water, which are home to many water-dwelling creatures. Heavier creatures must be careful when traveling over the ice, as they may break through thin ice and fall into the freezing water below. The ice patches of the region vary in size, and some of them are quite large.

The snowy terrain of the area is hazardous to travel over, as these snowy areas are where quicksnow is found. Quicksnow patches are very common in the region, as the consistency of the snow and earth in the region is ideal for quicksnow formation. Similar to the region's patches of ice, the patches of quicksnow vary in size, with some occupying very large areas of snowy terrain.

One other unusual sight in the Frozen Fen's terrain is that of large unsightly dark green patches that can be found sporadically throughout the snow. These patches are deposits of grass goop, which is a sticky substance consisting of snow, mud, and large quantities of plant matter. Grass goop is unusually slimy and sticky, and is generally considered quite unpleasant.

Much of the region's ecosystem is actually found below the ground, in the bodies of water found below patches of ice. Many aquatic creatures and other forms of life occupy these areas. Some of the water in the Frozen Fen is actually not frozen over, due to either a high salt content in the water, the presence of underwater fire geysers which warm the water, or a combination of both.

Portions of the Frozen Fen are also especially muddy and swampy, with mud often mixing with quicksnow and grass goop to form unique substances. These muddy regions have the highest concentration of plantlife in the area, forming rich areas of the region which are often highly populated by surface creatures that feed on and sometimes live on the plants. Less muddy areas of the Frozen Fen have much more infrequent plantlife, though it can still be found dotting the region.

Trivia

  • Quicksnow, the main hazard of the Frozen Fen region, is directly taken from a dream that the creator of Pikmin: Antarctic Survival had in around 2010. The substance is virtually identical to quicksand, only consisting of snow instead of sand.
    • The dream which featured quicksnow took place in a Pikmin 2 cave that was snow-themed similar to several of the Valley of Repose's caves from Pikmin 2, but also contained large patches of snowy quicksand, which functioned similar to the quicksand patches in some of the Wistful Wild's cave sublevels. The dream sublevel's enemies were various members of the lithopod family, mainly Armored Cannon Larvae and Decorated Cannon Beetles, as well as a new variant of lithopod larva which was capable of flight and shot boulders down from above. In the dream, lithopod larvae were able to walk over and burrow through quicksnow without becoming trapped in it. However, this is not the case in Pikmin: Antarctic Survival.
