The Test Enemy is a rare type of enemy appearing in the various Alliance PNF-404 Research Ships, or APRSs, of Pikmin: Dual Worlds. Unlike other enemies, the Test Enemy has no defined shape: instead of being a single species, it's a name given to a variety of different mechanical foes intended to be used for training procedures. A Test Enemy can appear in several different forms, but all of them have a few common characteristics outside of generally having a mechanical appearance: they all appear as a generic member of the family they're supposed to represent, attack exclusively by eating, and are exclusively weak to Test Pikmin. All other attacks are entirely ineffective, as it's only able to be deactivated by the APRS's artificial intelligence or by putting Test Pikmin into the ports found on its back, usually by throwing. Luckily, Test Pikmin are always found nearby, and they will spit out a small number of Test Pikmin cubes on defeat, though any Test Pikmin that were "eaten" are in their off state and can not be unfolded into Pikmin form. They can eat three total Pikmin at once, and any non-Test Pikmin they eat will be counted as deaths, unlike Test Pikmin. They serve as the main threats of the APRSs Phi and Chi, though organic enemies can sometimes be found there. The amount of health a Test Enemy has is determined by size; small is roughly the size of a Dwarf Bulborb, medium-low is about the size of a Yellow Wollywog, medium-high is about the size of a Toady Bloyster, and large is about the size of a Red Bulborb. Due to generally being used for testing purposes, defeating all Test Enemies in an area may be required to open certain doors.
