Pikmin: Dusk and Dawn is a fan-made Pikmin game concept created by DandoriDoondin. Designed like the traditional Pikmin games, albeit with a twist on the main format: exploring at night. Chronologically, Pikmin: Dusk and Dawn takes place a few years after Pikmin 4.

Story

Epilogue

Years after the events of Pikmin 4, Captain Olimar, worried sick about his space dog, Moss, decides to take a vacation back to PNF-404. Unbeknownst to him, Louie, his dim-witted co-worker, and Chacho, his boss, who owns the shipping company Hocotate Freight, sneak onto his ship to observe his performance.

Olimar is nearing PNF-404's atmosphere, and is managing to control his ship well enough to not cause a crash landing! Until Louie, wanting to steal one of Olimar's snacks, breaks his cover–despite Chacho hurriedly signaling him to come back–asking him if he can have some of his food. Olimar is so badly frightened by Louie's sudden appearance that he loses control of the ship and careens straight into an asteroid, totaling the S.S. Dolphin.

His ship spins down towards the ground, as the sun sets behind the eclipsed planet. The title fades in.

PIKMIN: DUSK AND DAWN

Verdant Vales

Olimar wakes up in Verdant Vales, his life support system obnoxiously beeping. His space suit resuscitated him after he passed out from the crash. Olimar's vitals become stable again, but the beeping doesn't stop. It's from another suit. Olimar's face turns to one of worry when he remembers Louie. He digs through the rubble of the now completely destroyed S.S. Dolphin. He finds Louie, unconscious but still breathing. A small crack is on his helmet. He decides to let Louie recover while he goes exploring. Olimar, cautious about exploring after dark, brings a headlight with him. Now able to see, but not much, he starts scouting out the area, and the tutorial begins.

The tutorial functions similarly to the tutorial of Pikmin 3, with Olimar wandering around. After walking along a trail for a little, a cutscene begins. Olimar is walking along a dirt path, his body only illuminated by the red antennae on his helmet, and the headlight around it. There isn't much to see in the Verdant Vales at this time, but Olimar is fascinated by the scenery. Too fascinated to notice that he's about to trip over something. Olimar's foot gets caught, and he stumbles to the ground. His helmet scratched and his suit covered in dirt, he looks behind him to see what he tripped over, only to see a bright, glowing mushroom. A blue light reflecting off of his helmet, and he gets up to inspect it. After thinking it's just a regular Common Glowcap, he breathes a sigh of relief, his whistle faintly blowing in the process. The dirt beneath the Glowcap begins to shuffle. As Olimar stumbles back, preparing to fight for his life in near-pitch-black darkness, a small, luminescent cyan creature pops out. Olimar slowly realizes what it is.

A new type of Pikmin, a Lumin.

Olimar is dumbfounded that there are even more undiscovered species of Pikmin, but he realizes how important they are to his survival. So Olimar tasks himself with finding more Lumin.

After some more walking, and whistling some more of the strange new Pikmin type that are out in the open, Olimar comes across three more of the same mushrooms.

P2 Olimar icon.png They seemed to respond when I blew my whistle... Maybe that will work?

Blowing the whistle near them will cause the Lumin to uproot themselves and pop out from under the ground.

P2 Olimar icon.png Ah! I can unroot them by pressing Switch B.png to whistle. How interesting... I wonder if something happens if I throw them using Switch A.png...

When throwing the Lumin, they root themselves into the ground, becoming Glowcaps once again.

P2 Olimar icon.png I see... This is quite the perplexing species of Pikmin.

After collecting around 25 Lumin, Olimar enters a cave. Since it is pitch black, Olimar says to himself that it would be a good idea to throw the Lumin to illuminate the area. So, he throws a Lumin ahead of himself to see what's ahead.

A sleeping creature.

Olimar freaks out as the beast slowly wakes up. He tries running, but the beast catches up to him easily. The camera zooms into his horrified face as the screen cuts to black, its close reflection on his helmet.

Main story

Back in space, a spaceship called the S.S. Twilight is drifting through an asteroid belt. The ship sustains some damage but is fine enough to initiate the landing sequence. The spaceship door opens, and the screen fades to black, a character creation sequence begins. The player can customize their character as they see fit, including the character's skin color, hairstyle, and body shape. When finished, the cutscene resumes, and the character steps out of their ship.

Sunrise Garden

Now in the Sunrise Garden, the second tutorial begins. In the second tutorial, the character comes across Red Pikmin and their Onion, and learns how to use them. The captain, after defeating some enemies and moving a box out of the way, discovers their first treasure, the Amateur's Medallion, buried halfway into the dirt. After it is dug up and brought to the ship, the Treasure Hoard is unlocked.

After collecting the Amateur's Medallion and an Emergency Repair Kit, the day will automatically end. Fortunately, due to the Repair Kit, the ship is able to enter low orbit for the character to survive the night, and can now travel to the Stargazer's Grasslands. There is nothing to do with only Red Pikmin elsewhere, and so Stargazer's Grasslands is the only way forward.

Stargazer's Grasslands

In the Stargazer's Grasslands, the character finds the Yellow Onion, finds the first cave, the Dawn Den where they find Purple Pikmin, collect a few upgrades and treasures, and fights the King Pellet Poser. Defeating the King Pellet Poser yields the Vein Card, which increases the ship's scanning radius. Once the radar is upgraded, Blossom Grove is unlocked.

Blossom Grove

Louie, the second captain, is found here. He is particularly jaded and irritable, mostly due to the injuries he sustained in the Verdant Vales; it's a miracle that he's even found his way here. Once Louie joins the other characters, the leaders can stay past sunset for another five minutes before it becomes too dangerous to remain on the planet's surface. The Pink Onion is also found in this area, and the leaders discover their first new Pikmin, the Dart Pikmin. Once finding and defeating the boss of the area, the Segmented Cellarpede, the team collects the Arial Spy, improving the radar further. They find Luminescent Caverns and Verdant Vales, but crystals restrict access to the latter half of the Verdant Vales, and only Rock Pikmin or Bomb Pikmin can break them. Also, the leaders can spend another five minutes past sunset, totaling ten extra minutes to explore in a day, albeit with an added risk of more dangerous enemies, night enemies, and in later areas, night-dwellers, extremely formidable bosses that begin to roam 10-25 minutes past sunset.

Luminescent Caverns

Here, Rock Pikmin, as well as their Onion, are found. Rock Pikmin are needed to access the second half of the Verdant Vales, so it is advised to clear Luminescent Caverns first. The main source of raw material and Luminum is also found here, in ores that can be mined with either a pickaxe or Rock Pikmin. Lumin and their Onion are also found here, their Onion having been swallowed by a Glowstool, which must be defeated in order to progress further into the area. The area's boss is the familiar Vehemoth Phosbat, making its return from Pikmin 3. Using Lumin, the team manages to defeat the beast, granting the Digital Brain. Sadly, it isn't quite enough to travel to a new area.

If this is the first area visited, Louie will begin to show signs of a mysterious sickness, albeit unnoticeable at first...

Modes

  • Challenge Mode: a mode in which there are multiple levels to complete to move on to the next. The gimmicks are reminiscent of Pikmin 1's and Pikmin 2's Challenge Modes.
  • Dandori Challenge: like Pikmin 4's Dandori Challenges, the goal is to collect as much treasure as possible.
  • Mission Mode: returning from Pikmin 3, Mission Mode consists of collecting treasure, killing enemies, and defeating bosses.
  • Hard Mode: a "new game+" for the main story and DLC, making enemies harder, faster, and stronger while giving bosses new attacks and patterns.
  • Bottomless Pit: an endless mode that involves traversing an endless cave, collecting treasures, enemy corpses, gemstones, Solium, and Luminum for points. Every ten to fifteen sublevels is a boss sublevel, and sublevels become increasingly more difficult the more are completed. When every captain is downed or every Pikmin is extinct, the game is over, and every collectible, remaining Pikmin, and captains' remaining health is converted into points. A rank system displays the top scores for a player, and a Treasure Catalogue displays the treasures and how many of each have been collected. Points can be used to purchase upgrades, items, and boosters.
  • Boss Rush: introduced in the Twilight Trails DLC, this mode involves fighting the game's bosses, one after another. Different difficulties can be chosen, the hardest one giving bosses an "evolved" form, changing their attack patterns and color scheme.
  • New Game+: play the game over again, retaining all collected upgrades. Hard Mode is automatically enabled, new areas unlock, and some enemies change.
  • Side Story: a prequel to the events of Pikmin: Dusk and Dawn, A.X.E.M., in need of parts to rebuild himself with, and the Overlord, who wants to learn more about how his planet has evolved, team up. However, one of them seems to be getting influenced by a mysterious life-form...
