In another part of PNF-404, Louie falls through a canopy of foliage in the Verdant Tropics and onto an isolated section of rocky coast surrounded by water and mangrove trees. He spots some Rock Pikmin and uses them to break a glass wall, finding a cave on the other side. With nowhere else to go, he enters the cave and discovers Metal Pikmin, which he then uses to clear his way by cutting through roots that are blocking parts of the cave. At the end of the cave, he discovers the E.C.T., or "Emergency Cargo Transporter", a satellite-like device that was recently installed during the ship's restoration. It serves as a backup portable storage device, allowing for treasure collection on the field without the need for the ship to be present. It too has an AI, but an extremely rudimentary one compared to the ship's. Upon activation, it informs Louie of its purpose, as well as the emergency signal it received from the ship, which is to focus on repairing it. It also informs him that it's unable to calculate the time in caves, and to head to the surface. Exiting the cave, Louie discovers the Rock Onion. After his first day on the planet is over, he writes his thoughts down in his log.

The second and final ending occurs when Pecha is rescued from the Primordial Gigantoad.

The alternate ending occurs if the 16 most essential ship parts are not found by day 30. Reminiscent of the bad ending of p1, on the morning of day 31, Olimar and Louie are shown to be unconscious. They are discovered by their Pikmin, and both are carried to their respective Onions. They are then beamed up by the Onions and pop out as Pikmin-like creatures. If this ending occurs, the credits roll, and the game cannot be continued unless the save file is restarted. The conditions to get this ending include not picking up any ship parts dropped by bosses or any of the essential parts found inside caves and outside in the overworld. This ending is impossible to get once Olimar and Louie are reunited as the 16 essential ship parts are required for that to happen. Additionally, getting this ending unlocks cosmetic skins for Olimar and Louie in 2-Player Battle and Challenge Mode that resemble their Pikmin-like creature forms.

Pikmin: New Frontiers is a fan-game made by Reginald-Bulbazorp for the Nintendo Switch. It is set after the events of Pikmin 3.

Plot

Olimar and Louie are sent back to PNF-404 yet again, this time because of an intergalactic stock market crash. Hocotate Freight's revenue fell by 40%, and while the President initially wanted to sell off all assets and dissolve the company, much to the horror of Olimar and Louie, his wife convinced him to send his employees back to PNF-404 to retrieve more treasure and make up for the company's tanking profits.

They board the newly restored ship and head off. However, as they enter the planet's atmosphere, turbulence and poor visibility due to stormy weather result in a particularly bumpy landing that separates the two coworkers – and the ship from them, which did so in a couple dozen pieces. Olimar splashes down into the misty Mesmerizing Marsh, and by luck, the ship's research pod lands close by. However, the research pod is on the other side of an impenetrable metal wall and he begins to look for alternate routes. As he explores, he discovers Acid Pikmin along with an Acid Onion. He uses their ability to spit acid to melt the wall, and with the help of his Pikmin, they free the research pod from the mud it was lodged in. Despite its battered state, it still works and the ship's artificial intelligence informs Olimar that he needs to repair it urgently by recovering ship parts. After a productive first day exploring the marshland, Olimar suddenly realizes Louie is nowhere to be found and ponders his whereabouts in his log.

Olimar eventually finds the Yellow Onion in the Mesmerizing Marsh and the Pink Onion in the Glistening Snowdrift, while Louie finds the Blue Onion in the Verdant Tropics and the Red Onion in the Singed Craglands, and both of them come across Purple and White Pikmin while exploring their respective locales. After they pick up at the very least all the essential ship parts, the two Hocotatians travel to the Toppled Kingdom and find the ship's mostly bare framework. They reassemble the ship and leave the planet, returning to Hocotate to report to the President after being missing in action for so long.

After Olimar and the ship brief the President on how things went, the President informs them that he had hired a private investigator named Pecha to find them, fearing the worst. Unfortunately, he’s since lost contact with her after she went to PNF-404. He pleads with them to return to PNF-404 and find her, along with more treasure (as he still has yet to pay her), and they reluctantly do so.

Following clues to the P.I.'s whereabouts, they gain access to a portion of the Toppled Kingdom that was originally blocked off. They descend the well and find the Primordial Gigantoad, a massive creature with a bottomless appetite. Once they defeat it, it spits out several valuable treasures along with Pecha.

Once Pecha wakes up from the ordeal, she thanks them, but seems confused as to who they are. When Olimar explains, Pecha says she wasn't sent here to “rescue” anyone, rather she was sent to find the location of a crashed ship and other missing assets belonging to Hocotate Freight. With her ship having crash-landed on entry, Pecha was forced to do a majority of her detective work on foot. She tracked the signs of the crashed Hocotate ship to what seemed to be its last location, and her Valuable Asset Gauge implied that the ship and other missing assets may have fallen down the well. Olimar, disappointed with his boss’s lack of faith in his own employees and reckless endangerment of a private investigator, offers Pecha a ride back to Hocotate.

On the way there, Pecha mentions that she hopes the President can pay her the money he owes her, especially after her ship was destroyed. Suddenly, Olimar realizes Pecha is sitting in the co-pilot’s seat. When he asks her why, she says “that quiet guy” insisted she board the ship before him, and she just took the first available seat. After thinking about it for a moment, she also says that she didn’t actually see him board. Olimar seems shocked at first, then wearily shakes his head, knowing full well Louie was left behind once again.

Endings

The game has three endings in total, two sequential endings that occur one after the other and an alternate ending. The first ending occurs on day 31 if Olimar and Louie have reached the Toppled Kingdom and all 16 essential ship parts have been found, but can also occur sooner if the all ship parts are recovered before day 31. The second and final ending occurs when Pecha is rescued from the Primordial Gigantoad.

The alternate ending occurs if the 16 most essential ship parts are not found before day 31. Reminiscent of the bad ending of Pikmin 1, on the morning of day 31, Olimar and Louie are shown to be unconscious.

Gameplay

Gameplay is similar to a fusion of Pikmin 2 with aspects of Pikmin 1. Quality-of-life improvements from Pikmin 3 are present. The top priority in the beginning is finding all the ship parts first, and there is a hard time limit of 30 days; failing to get the 16 most essential parts before then results in the bad ending. Treasure has no time limit to get, and can be collected at leisure.

There are 5 different areas, with the first four being split evenly between Olimar and Louie. There are also several caves to be explored for treasure or ship parts.

In the first half of the story, Olimar and Louie are entirely separate and in completely different areas. Each day is played twice, once from Olimar's perspective, and then again from Louie's perspective. This serves to show how hard both Hocotatians are working to survive each day. There are more caves in areas that Louie is in, with more priority on cave exploration. In Olimar's areas, there is more overworld exploration and an area boss. In the second half of the story, they reunite. Once Olimar and Louie reunite, parts of previous areas they couldn't access alone become accessible to both of them.

Alternative game modes

Aside from the main game, there are two additional game modes. 2-Player Battle and Challenge Mode both return. Finishing the main game unlocks both the President and Pecha as playable characters in these modes.

2-Player Battle

2-Player Battle is an unlockable game mode in which two players compete against each other. Players must collect treasure under a time limit, and whoever has the higher score at the end wins. Additionally, each player has a colored marble near their respective Onions that can be stolen by the other player for an instant win. Cupid's Grenades return from previous battle modes and function similarly; collecting them grants power-ups that either benefit the player that uses them or hinder the opposing player.

Challenge Mode

Challenge Mode is an unlockable game mode that features a variety of challenges. The objectives of these challenges vary from collecting all treasures, defeating all enemies, and battling bosses. All challenges start with specific varieties of Pikmin, have time limits, and feature a bonus challenge of completing the stage without losing any Pikmin. Challenge mode can be played both in single-player, or 2-player co-op.

Content

Pikmin

All five main Pikmin types appear once again and function much as they did in Pikmin 3, only Purple Pikmin regain their attack boost and ability to stun enemies. Mushroom Pikmin also return and so do Bulbmin, with both functioning how they do in Pikmin 1 and Pikmin 2 respectively. There are also two new Pikmin types, one that can be discovered in the overworld and another that can be found underground.

Returning types
New types
 • Acid Pikmin: can spit acid from afar when instructed to charge as well as have an elemental resistance to acid. Their acid can melt certain metal walls, and most enemies that eat them will start to slowly lose health. They also have their own Onion and can be propagated like most other Pikmin types.
 • Metal Pikmin: do as much damage as Purple Pikmin but don't stun enemies. They can also cut down walls made of roots and reeds. They don't have their own Onion and can only be found underground through the use of their respective candypop buds.

Characters

 • Captain Olimar: one of the two main protagonists. He returns to PNF-404 once again, only this time he experiences an acute sense of déjà vu for the very first time he crash-landed on the planet.
 • Louie: one of the two main protagonists. He accompanies Olimar back to PNF-404 to collect treasure, but really, he's more interested in eating.
 • The President: a secondary character and minor antagonist. He sends Olimar and Louie back to PNF-404 at the behest of his wife. He grows paranoid after losing communication with them when they crash the ship, and hires a private investigator in hopes of retrieving the ship and anything Olimar and Louie might've collected. He winds up unintentionally endangering the P.I. as a result.
 • Pecha: a secondary character and her first appearance in the series. She's an interplanetary private investigator from Koppai who specializes in finding lost or stolen property. Used to venturing to other planets to find missing things, she doesn't consider to ask what kind of planet PNF-404 is when the President of Hocotate Freight requests her service, only to find out when she crash-lands on the dangerous planet.

Ship parts are needed to progress in the first half of the story. Each ship part goes toward repairing the ship, with some parts also serving as upgrades. There are 30 ship parts in total, though only 16 are required, meaning 14 ship parts can be missed. Any remaining ship parts can still be recovered in the second half of the story.
