The frown grenade is an obstacle appearing in Pikmin 2... Again?. It resembles a transparent gashapon capsule-like orb filled with wither gas and with a cartoony yellow frowny face badge inside. They fall from cave ceilings and break upon impact with the ground, releasing a lingering cloud of withering gas. A counterpart of them, the smile grenade, was introduced in The Amazing New Update!!.

Surprisingly, the frown grenade also doubles as a treasure, the Frown Grenade, in the Crumbling Dungeon, as one lands on a part with a mattress, cushioning its fall well enough that it doesn't burst open and can be delivered to the Research Pod for Pokos.

Grumpy grenades are a new obstacle in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. They resemble small, plastic bags with a large frowny face painted on the front. The small bag is filled with an unknown, brown gas. The grenade can be found hanging from ceilings or on catapults. If Pikmin were to walk beneath the bag, it would fall down onto the group and burst. Any Pikmin hit by the gas will have their flowers withered. The best way to avoid the obstacle is by throwing one Pikmin under the bag to activate the trap and then quickly whistling them away before it lands.
