Refuse is the main collectible in Pikmin Evolution, as they act as the main source of Sparklium, which is essential to have. Refuse is comparable to treasures in that it is based on real-world objects, and fruits in that there are multiple instances of the same refuse. However, what truly separates refuse from both is that, after refuse is collected, another instance of it or an entirely different piece of refuse can appear in its previous place or close to it.

Certain refuse has a chance to be "pristine", noted for its brilliant shine. Pristine refuse yields fifty percent more Sparklium than its ordinary counterpart, making them even more crucial to collect. Other refuse has a chance to be "contaminated", indicated by it being covered in a hazardous substance, meaning only a certain Pikmin type can carry it. Refuse covered in hot coals can only be carried by Elixer Pikmin, refuse coated in toxic sludge can only be carried by Germ Pikmin, refuse shrouded in black smoke can only be carried by Roach Pikmin, and refuse encased in ice can only be carried by Alloy Pikmin.

Each piece of refuse is categorized under a different family, or collection, unified by a single common trait shared between each piece of refuse. Finding all refuse in a family improves the odds of finding pristine instances of refuse in that particular family. If the name of a particular piece of refuse is bolded, it means that the refuse is comprised of several small pieces that must be collected individually to form the whole piece again.

Each refuse has three journal entries written by Magdelene, Azure, and Sal, similar to the Piklopedia. Each writes about different topics relating to the specific refuse in question. Magdelene discusses her personal thoughts and experiences she relates to the refuse in question, Azure discusses theories on how a piece of refuse was used by the precursors of this world, and Sal discusses sales pitches about each piece of refuse in an attempt to sell it. The former two's entries are available in the base game, but Sal's entries only become available upon purchasing and playing the House of Gloom DLC.

We just had our base fumigated today because of a Sheargrub infestation. When they were cleared out, we found out that the culprit was one of the fruits we salvaged during our trip. We have decided to give patient zero its rather unpalatable name to help warn other people of the dangers fruits can have when not checked for any foreign entities. Now I need to check if any of Leni's minced fruit pies had any traces of Sheargrub. She tried so hard to make them vegan so she didn't want her efforts wasted.

Azure's analysis

This vibrant red bulb is the home to a cavalcade of fascinating insect species. The insects inside seem to have grouped together due to the fruit's high sugar content. It seems that, despite the desperate species found inside, there seems to be no infighting. I wonder if this was a precursor to our idea of living together in a community.

Sal's appraisal log

It may not look like it, but this fruit is a one-stop shop for entomologists as it attracts insects from such wide distances. Its juice also contains the sugars needed to jumpstart the development of one's insect sanctuary, so to all bug lovers, please purchase now.

After our incident with the whole Sheargrub infestation at our base, we were more careful with this subspecies. Luckily, this one didn't have any traces of an infestation, so Leni decided to try and make some of her minced fruit pies. However, when we fed them to the cafeteria, we were faced with a sudden increase in cases of food poisoning. I guess if even the insects don't want to eat this fruit we shouldn't be eating them either.

Azure's analysis

While the Insect Condo was a vibrant home for all kinds of insect life, this subspecies seems to be one where even the lowest of the bottomfeeders don't want to enter with a 20-foot long pole. Why does nature make such terrible housing, and why do we copy from nature every time we make a seedy run-down apartment?

Sal's appraisal log

When juiced, this sour fruit is an all-natural pesticide. A great flushing agent for chasing out pesky insects and worms without needing to harm your Figworts or Margrets. Not safe to drink.
High-end Insect Condo HP Sparklium icon.png × 400 15 25 Golden apple Magdelene's journal
Neither Leni nor the cafeteria patrons want to test if this rather saccharine fruit either has a Scornet Maestro inside or if consuming it will cause spontaneous death. However, when making my daily checkups on all of our held refuse, I discovered that the flesh has been shaved off this fruit. Does this mean Leni is making her honeyed fruit chips? I can't wait...! ...Okay, so, apparently Leni didn't touch the fruit. In fact, no one did. Does that mean... Oh no.

Azure's analysis

The pinnacle of organic housing, this fruit only holds the most respected of arthropods. Meanwhile, the lowly grubs and worms have only been trying to forcefully evict the powerful denizens within, usually to be responded to by said powerful denizen taking their annoyance out on the crowd. Class warfare at its finest.

Sal's appraisal log

Its high sugar content can sustain a growing insect to adulthood. This can be sold to places ranging from hospitals, science labs, zoos, and even some schools. Warning: consumption may result in mild dizziness and sudden bouts of unconsciousness.

Seed of Greed HP Sparklium icon.png × 350 10 15 Chestnut
Corpulent Nut HP Sparklium icon.png × 450 20 35 Large acorn Magdelene's journal
Ivy got into some hot water today over accidentally insulting an official from a far-off tribe of grey leaflings from a Dusk Pustule's induced stupor. She really shouldn't be drinking that stuff. I didn't hear it, but apparently, she joked about how if all leaflings were as girthy as this seed sample we recently discovered, there would be no food left. I am disappointed now since, while that is an insensitive comment on someone's weight, I wanted to see the drama play out.

Azure's analysis

Ivy once said a larger creature needs more nutrients to survive, so by that logic the Corpulent Nut could be seen as the plant equivalent to that concept. Its large girth has led it to develop a thick shell. Maybe someone out there could have cultivated these seeds to create the epitome of natural defense.

Sal's appraisal log

The shell of this rotund seed is both supple and durable, it can be used to create sturdy pine houses or make an unbreakable wood fence. You can even grow your own, as long as you have the life savings to feed its insatiable appetite.

When we packed up shop and decided to rest at camp, I saw Marvin tend to a Pikmin unfortunate enough to lose their flower to a Withering Blowhog. He placed his shoulder on the poor plant and gifted him this wooden cap we found, I assume to protect himself from any future dangers. You know what, tomorrow I'll gift Marvin a free leaf-cutting appointment, he clearly needs a reward for a good man.

Azure's analysis

The people of the ancient world must have been a violent civilization. I mean, why haven't we ever seen them in the modern age? This cap, carved from the toughest tree bark, seems to have acted as a primitive piece of armor during this civilization's many battles.

On one of our previous expeditions, Leni and I discovered this vial of a rather putrid concoction while the others had an unfortunate run-in with an Emperor Bulblax. Leni, being the master of ingredient identification, quickly told me that this was no drink, but some sort of mineral water that he sensed had some sort of healing powers. When we saw how exhausted the others were after their fight, I decided to test this out by giving them a towel soaked in this stuff. Azure said it felt slightly tingly, Ivy didn't feel anything, and Marvin... Well, he was completely fine. I mean, look at him, he is a pinnacle of Leafling fitness, so I should expect him to have high pain tolerance.

Azure's analysis

Ivy's chemical analysis has shown that this fluid is actually an undiscovered mixture of different minerals, and when mixed together makes a chemical reaction that is said to burn away scabs and infections. However, due to how unnatural it is to see these different minerals together in the modern day and the fact that this item was found in a clearly artificial container, it made us wonder if this wonder fluid was even natural.

Magelene's journal

When out exploring, I found this rock in a cave during one of my regular spelunking expeditions. It had a cool bug inside of it so I took it to Ivy's lab to see if she could analyze the contents of what's inside the rock. As I told her about the contents, she went on a whole tangent on her theories on how life started out as tiny insects that grew to colossal sizes as they evolved, and how this stone may be the missing link between the Pikmin and insects. All I could is awkwardly clap and silently walk away when she was preoccupied. Science is not my thing.

Azure's analysis

If there is one thing I don't understand, it's which species descended from what. While Ivy, as a biologist, knows a thing or two about such a topic, I am just confused sometimes with the more ambiguous creatures, like, if the Snagrets are birds or reptiles, if the Breadbugs are mammals, and what's the deal with the Arachnorbs. This causes me to appreciate the insect trapped in this stone. At least that one is pretty cut and dry.

Sal's appraisal log

The creature within this resin is not dead, rather, they are just taking part in a sacred vow of silence and solitude. Viewers can look inside and allow the creature within to bring about a sense of calm.
