The Haunt is a highly evolved and deadly supernatura that is known to reside in spaces between dimensions and prey on lesser supernaturae passing through the space. The creature somewhat resembles the upper body of a humanoid, though it is entirely missing arms. It does, however, have hands, which are disconnected and move independently from its body but seem to be unable to float far from the body.

Haunts are incredibly dangerous, being completely unkillable, even unaffected by methods that work on similar creatures such as the gravitational waves of a Purple Pikmin. Explosions, gravitational waves, and even pure energy either pass through a Haunt harmlessly, or are simply absorbed into it with no effect. As a result of a Haunt's invulnerability, the creature is best avoided. Thankfully, it does not feed on Pikmin, and will never intentionally attack them, though it may grab them in its claws and eat them when clawing at its preferred prey. They also will generally not attack leaders, as they do not feed on them either, though they may attack leaders to defend their territory if they deem a leader to be intruding. Instead, they are known to feed on supernatura such as the Waterwraith and Plasm Wraith that are foolish enough to remain in a place between dimensions for too long.

While hunting, Haunts float aimlessly from one place to another in the regions they inhabit, constantly emitting horrifying groaning noises that can be heard even far from their current location and induce feelings of dread and terror in anyone that hears them. They seem completely disconnected and unaware of the world around them, and have even been observed to pass through objects blocking their paths due to their ghostly nature. However, if a Haunt sees potential prey while on the hunt, which typically takes the form of various supernatura, it will suddenly display extreme aggression, shown by the Haunt suddenly lurching through the air toward its prey at an incredible speed, stopping only when it reaches its target. At this point, Haunts will let out unearthly and horrifying screech sounds to paralyze their prey, and will then begin to attack using their sharp clawed hands.

The screech of a Haunt has varying effects on different creatures of the ecosystem. Pikmin will be overcome with terror and begin to panic if they are in range of a Haunt's screech, though Purple Pikmin and other panic-resistant Pikmin are immune. Leaders will be knocked to the ground and dazed. The screen of the player themself will glitch out and distort if an active leader is affected by a Haunt's screech, making it difficult to tell what is happening through the distortions, though this effect will wear off shortly after the Haunt is done screeching. Finally, the effects of a Haunt's screech on any other member of the supernatura family are the most destructive. A Waterwraith subjected to the screech will immediately become solidified and paralyzed, exactly as if the Waterwraith was hit by a Purple Pikmin's gravitational waves. A Plasm Wraith or similar supernatura will collapse into liquified goop and become unable to reform its body or move for a time. While a Wraith is in this state, it becomes an easy target for the Haunt to attack and consume. Haunts will completely consume their prey, not leaving a single remnant of their prey's bodies behind before moving on to their next meal.

Haunts seem intelligent like many other supernaturae, but they are completely incapable of being reasoned with, as they seem to exist on a different level of consciousness than any other beings. Haunts will either outright ignore creatures they do not see as food, as if the creatures aren't even there, or will brutally attack and rip apart any creature that they do consider food.

Though Haunts do not attack Pikmin and leaders for food, Haunts in some areas may guard treasures or other collectible objects, and will furiously attack any creatures that they see attempting to make off with their possessions. As a result, extreme care should be taken when collecting objects that are claimed by one or more Haunts.

Haunts tend to travel and hunt in groups and display pack behaviors. A group of Haunts is called a "murder", similar to the terminology for crows.

The Haunts appear in Pikmin: Antarctic Survival as part of its "The Portal" DLC pack, where they are found in The Portal. These creatures which are typically next-to-harmless to non-supernatura become an incredible threat to Awakened creatures, as the effects of the Awakening Essence cause such changes to Awakened creatures that it results in any Awakened creature being treated as a potential meal by a Haunt. This means that Haunts will treat Awakened creatures the same way they treat supernaturae, lunging at them and screeching before consuming their targets when within range. Due to this danger, Awakened creatures should take care not to spend too long in The Portal, and to leave through one of the area's gateways if they begin to hear the distant groans that herald a Haunt's approach.

Due to the Haunt's invulnerability, Haunts cannot be Awakened and thus cannot become Diamond Settlement residents.
