In Pikmin: The After Years

The Dark Virus is the main antagonist and final boss of Pikmin: The After Years. This entity is responsible for the events of the game, as it stole the Jewel of Life for its own machinations and destabilized the universe in the process.

The Dark Virus can transform into a variety of horrifying and destructive forms, but its main appearance is as a pure black eight-pointed star with malicious-looking white eyes at its center. The Dark Virus bears an uncanny resemblance to the Dark Star from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, though it is unknown whether the similarity is intentional.

The Dark Virus has a massive army that it commands to do its every bidding, which consists of all of the dark matter enemies and bosses encountered throughout the game. This army is led by Zero Two, the second-in-command to the Dark Virus that is fought and defeated just before the Dark Virus is in the Galactic Warpzone. Other high-ranking members of the Dark Virus's legion include Bloodbath, the Dark Matter Warrior, the Smoky Progg, and Dark Olimar, all of which are also battled in the Galactic Warpzone's boss rush rematches before the final showdown with Zero Two and the Dark Virus.

As the Dark Virus is composed of dark matter, it is lethal to touch, and Pikmin thrown at it directly will instantly die. For this reason, the final boss fight against the Dark Virus seems hopeless at first, and the Dark Virus and its powerful dark matter attacks must be avoided throughout the first phase of the fight. When all hope seems lost, the Stick of Light will suddenly begin resonating with light, and appear for the Pikmin to wield. With the power of the Stick of Light, the leaders are able to turn the tides of the fight, as the Stick of Light is the sole artifact that can actually wound the mighty the Dark Virus. Even with this weapon on the Pikmin's side, though, the second phase of the Dark Virus battle is still incredibly brutal, as the creature's attacks become even more dangerous and destructive, and it begins re-summoning weaker and smaller versions of the various dark matter bosses that were fought throughout the Galactic Warpzone.

When the Dark Virus is finally defeated, it will explode in a massive blast of pure light and radiant stars, which shoot outward in all directions. the Dark Virus will then disintegrate into nothingness, finally destroying the source of dark matter once and for all and ending the desolation of the Pikmin Planet. As the Dark Virus disappears entirely, it leaves the Jewel of Life, the five hundredth and final treasure, on the ground where it disappeared.
