“ | Really? They have thorns now? | ” | – The ship, upon discovering the Thorny Waddlepus |
---|
The Thorny Waddlepus is an enemy in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature resembles a Waddlepus, having a scaly, dark red, starfish-shaped body with a yellow outlining and mouth. Along with its eyes with green sclerae and red pupils, the flobbler has dozens of spikes covering its entire body, including one large spike directly between its eyes.
Thorny Waddlepi can be found sleeping peacefully. Once poked or approached, they will suddenly awake from their slumber and expand their head greatly. If further aggravated, it will spew out a flurry of bubbles upon its attacker, which can trap Pikmin in them. The spikes on the Thorny Waddlepus make them completely immune to any attacks from Pikmin not immune to blunt force, as they will take damage from the spikes and potentially be killed. This can be especially dangerous, as Pikmin caught in bubbles may float above the Waddlepus and pop, the Pikmin falling right on them. Once there are no Pikmin in the general area, the Thorny Waddlepus will go back to resting in their original position.
Thorny Waddlepi can be taken on in different ways. Rock Pikmin and Weighted Pikmin are best suited for the job due to their blunt force immunity. Bomb Pikmin can also sacrifice themselves for an easy kill. Weighted Pikmin, Cactus Pikmin, and Dart Pikmin are also all immune to the bubbles of a Thorny Waddlepus, and Winged Pikmin can easily pop them.
In Overlord mode, the Thorny Waddlepus will occasionally spray ink like its normal counterpart.
Notes
- Data file #1: The spikes of a Thorny Waddlepus make them invulnerable to damage. Find other ways to hurt them.
Olimar's notes
- “This species of flobbler has managed to evolve spikes in replacement of their usual openings found on the top of their head which spews bubbles. This serves as a great deterrent for predators that try to prey on the lazy creature, allowing them to sleep for half of the day. They mainly perform their mating and consumption during the nighttime, as they have eyes developed for night vision.”
Louie's notes
- “Remove the spikes and grill these slabs of Waddlepi. You could eat the spikes... but... I probably wouldn't.”
President’s notes
- “Squish up this guy, and you have a spiked ball ready for battle! INCOMING DEBT COLLECTORS!! THE FLOBBLER CRUSHER!!”
Overlord’s thoughts
- “I was going to pet the Waddlepi, but I guess I can't now. Why does everything here have to develop thorns? I want to pet the animals.”

Attacks | Skewers Pikmin |
The Thorny Waddlepus is a more dangerous and slightly bigger and stronger relative of the Waddlepus. Unlike its harmless cousin, it is covered in spikes that protrude when it inflates its body, skewering Pikmin latched onto it and nearby. Rock Pikmin and Sandy Pikmin are immune to this attack.
