Attacks Impales Pikmin
Watch out for the spikes! We have to attack the correct side! – The ship, upon discovering the Spikeler

The Spikeler is a species of slabben in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. They resemble a large, red cube made out of stone, which is covered in cracks. However, there are numerous large holes on five of the sides except for the bottom. Breaking the cube will reveal a small, dark red insect with six legs, and a pair of antennae.

The Spikeler will remain completely idle, even when approached by Pikmin, it won’t move from its spot. However, once attacked, it will begin to shake around. One side of the Spikeler, which is randomly chosen, will begin to glow a bright red for a very short time before a large set of spikes will suddenly pierce right out of the shell. These spikes can impale numerous Pikmin at once, killing them. The spikes will then retract back into the shell, repeating the process a few seconds later. The side that the spikes come out of can’t be damaged due to the spikes, but the other sides can during the duration. When the shell is broken, the insect will be revealed, and be rendered vulnerable.

The Spikeler can be extremely dangerous if caught off-guard. The shell of the insect is very durable and may take a while to destroy. As with all other slabbens, the shell takes extra damage from Weighted Pikmin, Purple Pikmin, Rock Pikmin, and Dart Pikmin. An explosion from a Bomb Pikmin will only deplete two-thirds of the shell’s health. Take extreme care when taking on the Spikeler, and choose the correct side to damage. Treasures or objects may be found inside the shell of the insect, potentially making them a requirement to fight.

In Overlord mode, the Spikeler can fire from up to four sides at once, but it's more common for the slabben to fire from two or three sides.

Notes

  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #1: Spikeler’s are extremely dangerous. Choose the right side to damage, and move out of the way if you pick wrong!
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #2: Dodging the spikes by using the dodge whistle is most effective.

Olimar's notes

The Slabber comes from a diverse species of insects that collect bits of debris from its environment to construct a hard exterior. The Spikeler collects large, hardened thorns and wires them together in the form of a lever system within their shell. When the small insect senses vibrations on one side of a shell, they will flip a switch that connects to the spikes, which thrusts them out at the victim. They’ll emerge when the coast is clear to consume their spoils. The shell of a Spikeler is their home, and takes days for them to build due to how complex it is.

Louie's notes

Don’t eat this bug. Instead, use it to hunt food for you with its powerful defense mechanism. You can split their spoils 60–40.

President’s notes

I can use this insect to create booby traps for my safe! No more thieves or crooks!

Overlord’s thoughts

For an insect, it’s unnervingly intelligent. Maybe I’ll turn it into one of my partners like the Cosmic Complex Bulbot. The... Cosmic Complex Slabben!
