Spikes are obstacles taking the form of sharp protrusions coating or embedded within various surfaces, including the ground, walls, and even ceilings. Inapt Pikmin that touch them often jump back with a yelp, potentially losing their petals, and any that land on or are otherwise forced into spikes will be impaled and killed. Spikes may be static, remaining in one place, or emerge from holes in mechanisms either periodically or when they are activated. Spikes can be destructible or indestructible, or be coated by a particular hazard, making them even more dangerous.
