The Flat Splurchin is a species of stationary Splurchin appearing in Pikmin Evolution. As the name suggests they are essentially stationary flat discs with tiny holes jutting out very long spines. The size of the Flat Splurchin can vary greatly from as small as a Dwarf Red Bulborb to as big as the Giant Breadbug, but the entire shell is controlled by a tiny pink core in the center of the Splurchin's body. The spines of the Flat Splurchin are retracted when it enters a fluid like water and acid, where it can be safely broken with Kelp Pikmin and Germ Pikmin respectively. However on the surface, which is where this enemy most likely appears, it will have its spikes extended out, making direct attacks a bad idea. This is due to the fact that any Pikmin who tries to attack the creature will be impaled by the spines, all except Alloy Pikmin, before sucking their bodily fluids. While Alloy Pikmin are immune to being impaled, they can't attack the creature as the spikes are also exceptionally durable, causing the tossed Alloy Pikmin to simply bounce off harmlessly. Since they only become vulnerable due to outside factors, Flat Splurchins are often used as obstacles in the more coastal areas and dens, blocking off hidden passages off the shore. Since they can't be killed directly, the Flat Splurchin is best avoided, however there is one other way to kill them, but its a very risky way. What you need it a crystalline gray syrup, when sprayed the crystal will cover the spines of the Splurchin, allowing Alloy Pikmin to break the shell and reveal the fleshy inner core. However its risky because if not killed in a soon enough period of time the Flat Splurchin will launch the crystal as a very hard solid brick, being so heavy as too instantly kill even Alloy Pikmin. So if you want to kill the Flat Splurchin, you need to be fast and precise.

Notes

Ivy's journal

The oceans are among the least explored areas on the planet, with only the creatures that live in the shallows being widely known and studied. However when something like the memebers of the Splurchin family come up, even that becomes muddled. The Flat Splurchin is an amphibious Splurchin, using the signature sharp spines of the family as straws to suck in oxygen and small food particles when out of the water. In the water it will use its pores to release eggs will then get sucked and fertilized by other Splurchins, being hermaphrodites and all. It is a common scientific mistake to misidentify the more aquatic Round Splurchin as a dead Flat Spurchin due to similar coloring and body patterns, however a skilled biology myself knows that when the Flat Splurchin they melt into a puddle of body fluids since they now lack an active organ system.

Leni's recipe book

These creatures are quite delicate to prepare, one wrong cut and your Splurchin will explode into pink goop. It is best to lightly salt and butter your Splurchin then cut into small pieces to fill in a nice rich and creamy broth, the result is an irresistible seafood stew.

Marvin's strategy guide

The Alloy Pikmin can destroy anything as hard as a rock, but not metal, so the logical course of action is to trick the Alloy Pikmin into thinking the metal is a rock... Definatly no flaws to this plan.
