The Thundering Shearwig is a type of sheargrub in Pikmin: Elemental Speciation. It has a similar appearance to the Shearwig, except it has black chitin, and its mandibles are wider, and flatter at the end, which makes them look somewhat square when seen straight-on. When flying, the grooves in their chitin glow yellow. It also has yellow eyes. It has the same behaviors as pikmin 2 shearwigs, except that when they fall to the ground, either through landing or being hit by a pikmin, they release an orb of electricity around themselves. They also land much faster, visually diving into the ground instead of slowly flying down.

- “This species of shearwig has developed robust mandibles that are better able to chew through the thick flesh of the creatures it preys upon, but these jaws are ineffective at initial takedowns of prey, so they have evolved a specialized bioelectric system within its head that allows it to capture the kinetic energy when it crashes to the ground and, supplementing it with its own bioelectricity, to release it to shock nearby creatures, prey and predator alike.”
