The Flaming Cottonade is a charred, burning, and hostile cottonade. It floats aggressively about in the air above a set territory, usually in groups of two to four individuals. When Pikmin or leaders come near, it quickly swoops down at them to knock them over and catch them on fire. On contact, a Flaming Cottonade burns all but Red Pikmin, and leaders equipped with the Scorch Guard. Although difficult, it is possible to extinguish a Flaming Cottonade using water. Doing so will cause it to flee from nearby Pikmin and leaders as well as seek contact with sources of fire to ignite itself again.
The Flaming Cottonade bears a strong resemblance to most lesser cottonades, resembling a ball of cotton with eyestalks, but is completely black and engulfed in flames, and has green eyes with black pupils. It also emits smoke as a side effect of being lit on fire.
Red Pikmin are most effective against a Flaming Cottonade, which cannot harm them except knock them over. Flaming Cottonades have little vitality and throwing at least three Red Pikmin onto them will force them to the ground, where they are soon defeated. Upon death, a Flaming Cottonade will extinguish, and its body can be carried by any Pikmin type.
