The Basalt Tunnels is the second sub-area in the Roiling Springs and is accessible as early as Winged Pikmin are available to enter, although due to its difficulty, it is recommended to enter during the return trip after finding the important information held by the Vengeful Thicket's boss, as all Pikmin types are discovered by this point. As the name implies, the Basalt Tunnels are a volcanic cavern system characterized by the black rock walls, sandy floors, and abundance of molten rock. This combined with the many fire-wielding creatures lurking in the cave makes using a group containing many Red Pikmin imperative.
