The Angler Sputtlefish is a fully aquatic enemy appearing in Pikmin Z. Being a species of Sputtlefish and developing into an ambush predator, it holds some similarities, except it's darker-toned and has a third extension off of its head to hold a bulb in front of it to lure prey. It will not pursue leaders, but it will try to catch any prey that wanders in its light. During the day, there's little to worry about over the Angler Sputtlefish, but at night, it will try to catch prey that enters its field of light. Swarming will quickly do the creature in if it hasn't seen anything, but it's recommended that it be attacked from behind if it does, otherwise, it'll consume Pikmin rather quickly. It feeds on small aquatic animals and is hunted by large aquatic carnivores and Fishing Phosbats.

Notes

Piklopedia entry

This species of sputtlefish has turned from a simple fish to a silent hunter. It can't swim very fast, so it relies on its light to lure prey close, to which it swallows up very quickly. Though, I can see a predator using this light to eat an Angler Sputtlefish as well.

UGH! Watch out for the bright light! – The ship, upon discovering the Angler Sputtlefish

The Angler Sputtlefish is an enemy in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature resembles a Sputtlefish, having a light blue body with tentacle-fins curled around its dark blue eyes and its tube-like mouth nestled between. The back of the Sputtlefish has three navy blue fins with a small bulb in the middle of the fin flower. A small glowing sphere is attached to a long limb on the creature's head.

The Angler Sputtlefish can be found swimming in large pools of water. When any Pikmin or leaders get close to them, they will suddenly flip themselves head-down, and their light limb will point straight up. If aggravated enough, the Angler Sputtlefish will suddenly blast the group of Pikmin with a bright light. This will cause them to be stunned until whistled. The Sputtlefish will then swim up to its helpless prey and consume them. If the Sputtlefish is attacked after it flashes its light, it will quickly dart off away from its aggressors.

The Angler Sputtlefish can only be attacked by Blue Pikmin and Weighted Pikmin. Using Blue Pikmin is the best option, as they can swim and attack the creature. Circling the Pikmin around the Sputtlefish as it performs its attack allows an opening to quickly take out the enemy. Optionally, feeding a bomb rock to the creature will prevent any casualties from it.

In Overlord mode, the Angler Sputtlefish's flash of light can kill any Pikmin that are caught by it.

Olimar's notes

The Angler Sputtlefish can be found in the deepest of pools, along with other ocean floor dwellers like the mollusking species. They will use the bright light attached to their head to navigate and hunt prey. To obtain such a bright light, they consume and filter out certain zooplankton and convert them into energy which they use to give off their bioluminescent glow. They have seemed to lose their ink-squirting capacity, however.

Louie's notes

The light may look delectable, but it’s scorching to the touch; do not consume. Instead, chop fish into cubes and sear in a pan. Add rice with fish into corn tortillas, and add soy sauce to the fish for a better flavor. This gives you delicious Sputtlefish Tacos one could sear their tongue for.

President’s notes

A submarine light? Count me in! I just need to give it an incentive to work for me. Two Pokos a day!

Overlord’s thoughts

Little does Olimar know that he and his crew have barely discovered what’s in the ocean. I’d say he's only found about two percent of ocean-dwelling creatures. When he returns, he’ll have a lot to find here.
