Scientific name Parastacoidea reptantia
Family Creep-crab

The Segmented Crawbster is a crab-like creature that has one large arm, an exceedingly smaller left arm, and also has a rather thick shell protecting its main body. This creature rolls after the active leader, potentially crushing Pikmin under its weight. If it crashes into a wall, it can cause boulders to fall. It will then struggle to get back up in an upright position, and while doing so will expose its weak spot: its flashing underbelly. Eventually, it will then get back up and swing its large arm around back and forth two or so times and continue its assault.

Notes

Olimar's observations

This beast is truly powerful, not something to take lightly at all. I was lucky to be able to take this thing down at all. Well, I'll just hope I only have to fight one of these monsters this trip and not ever again. As if it wasn't bad enough before, it seems even stronger this time! Then again, that's kind of normal at this point. The Ship won't tell anyone this, but even it gets scared of this thing. All it does is sit there, what is it so worried about anyway? Actually, I really hope we never run into a creature that actually does see our ship as a target. The last thing I need is to get stranded here again, and this time with Louie!

Dessert meats are all the rage on Hocotate. When the planet's finest chefs hear about the kind of sorbets, pies, and parfaits you can make with the claw meat on this sweet beast, they'll clamor for every morsel we bring home!

The Segmented Crawbster is the boss of Bone Cove, a cave in Shimmering Seaside, and is the only Pikmin 2-exclusive boss to make a return in Pikmin Eco. While it physically is the same as its Pikmin 2 incarnation, its behavior differs greatly. In addition, the water level where it is fought has an impact on its behavior. It is fought inside a hollowed-out coral shell, where water can splash inside the arena during the battle to flood it, and then drain sometime later. When no water is present, it crawls slowly on the ground. If leaders or Pikmin get too close, it will swing its larger arm to knock them back. On occasion, it will slam the ground with its huge arm, crushing any Pikmin underneath it and causing boulders to fall from above. When the arena becomes flooded, the Segmented Crawbster will float along the surface of the water and swim around. It will also try to swing its huge claw around, but since it's swimming the swings are much more ranged. While it is swimming, Winged Pikmin are needed to push the crawbster so it is upside down so when the arena drains, it will be stuck on its back, exposing its vulnerable underbelly to attack. Eventually, it will swing itself back onto its stomach so it can not be killed in one fell swoop.

Notes

In-game entry

This specimen has evolved more one-sidedly: a highly developed muscular arm on one side with a much smaller arm on the other. While this does enable it to joust against competing rivals, it does also make its locomotion very limited when on land. It's notable that the inland segmented crawbster specimen behaved differently than those along the coastal region. Studies jot this up to minute variance between both types from different habitats.

The Segmented Crawbster also has a dark matter-infused variant, which is known as the "Dark Segmented Crawbster". The Dark Segmented Crawbster appears only in the Galactic Warpzone, the final cave, and it is a much stronger version of the Segmented Crawbster that has much more health, faster and deadlier attacks, and the ability to use a new, unique attack in addition to its existing ones.

Attacks Crushes Pikmin

The Segmented Crawbster appears as a vicious, dangerous creep-crab in Pikmin: Wide World, and uses Pikmin 2's boss theme. Crawbster Young are juvenile Segmented Crawbsters. It can not be seen, even with the use of the HocoPad's camera functionality, until it breaks through the cave ceiling above where Pikmin or leaders are treading by pounding on it violently until it crumbles and gives way, the creature itself falling immediately after and crushing anything it lands on top of. While idle, a Segmented Crawbster explores its large territory, dragging itself along using its larger arm. It occasionally stops to either groom its larger arm with its feelers or gently swing its tail from side to side. It curls up and rolls towards nearby leaders, but not Pikmin, that are in its range of sight, homing in on them and crushing anything it rolls over. While rolling, a Segmented Crawbster can turn, although not sharply, by tilting in the direction it wishes to go. It leaning too far left or right, however, forces the creature to return to its normal posture, although depending on its orientation it may either be on its belly or flipped over onto its back. Additionally, a Segmented Crawbster will be forced onto its back upon colliding with a wall, which may also cause boulders to fall from weaker cave ceilings. After righting itself, a Segmented Crawbster will violently swing its larger arm back and forth, flinging Pikmin off of it and away from the creature itself, and skewering Pikmin on the arm's blades. Pikmin and leaders crowding around the tail of a Segmented Crawbster risk their safety, as the creature may either knock them away with a flick of its tail or lift its tail to slam it on top of them.

A Segmented Crawbster is a massive crustacean-like creature. It is rather lengthy and has an indestructible, shiny, spotted, segmented blue shell covering all but its face, arms, and stomach. Its face is wide, red, and leathery, cleft in appearance, and features a relatively beady black eye on either side of it. Its arms are severely misproportioned, as its left arm is small and scrawny compared to its massive, club-like, bulky right arm, which features several curved, blade-like protrusions on its outer side. On the creature's underside is its exposed, pink, fleshy belly.

Emerging victorious from a battle with a Segmented Crawbster requires swift evasion of its attacks and complete control of the Pikmin being used to battle it. Its face and arms are vulnerable to attack, but targeting them does not inflict as much damage as attacking its belly, which may only be attacked when the creature is flipped onto its back. Even Rock Pikmin throws and Purple Pikmin pounds fail to pierce through the shell of a Segmented Crawbster. Rock Pikmin are very useful against a Segmented Crawbster because of their high damage output when thrown and their inability to be crushed. Winged Pikmin are equally as useful as Rock Pikmin because the Segmented Crawbster often has extreme difficulty in crushing them and because Winged Pikmin automatically target the creature's most vulnerable parts when they are charged into it. Pikmin attacking the face of a Segmented Crawbster are likely to be harmlessly wiped off of it by the creature's larger arm. After taking enough damage at once while upright, a Segmented Crawbster may angrily pound its larger arm on the ground several times, knocking away Pikmin and leaders close to it and crushing those under it, and also potentially causing a few boulders to fall from weaker cave ceilings. Upon death, a Segmented Crawbster yields HP Sparklium icon.png × 45, and will groan and squeal as its belly throbs and gurgles, writhing and curling up onto its side as it bursts open, spewing slime and undigested matter everywhere in its immediate vicinity and releasing a large quantity of harmless steam. Its body can be taken to the Lander Pod to either receive P3 Poko icon.png × 35 or gain fifty seeds of any selected discovered main Pikmin species, but only if the cave is exited using an escape geyser.

Notes

Olimar's notes

The segmented crawbster is an exceedingly dangerous predator. Its unique, and rather dramatic, ambush tactic to catch prey involve it using its brute strength to break through the ceiling above to crush them into a fine paste. The creature is not without its weaknesses, however, as even though its shell is completely impenetrable to attack, its face, legs, and exposed stomach are vulnerable, with damage to its soft stomach inflicting the most harm to the creature. The segmented crawbster's aversion to light is among the strongest held by any creature on the planet and explains why it so aggressively and relentlessly targets explorers in possession of a light source such as a beacon.

Shacho's notes

I always feel insecure whenever I see this creature not because of its size and ferocity but because of Olimar and Louie. There was a time they and I went to the beach, and I had worn blue swim trunks. I had forgotten to wear sunscreen, so by the time we were ready to head home, I was as red as this thing's skin! Every time we encounter this beast they always pick on me about it. I can still feel the stinging pain from that sunburn...

Marie's notes

This creature seems to be entirely passive in dark environments where visibility is at an absolute minimum, but because of its behavioral patterns, as well as its size and preferred habitat, I would strongly suggest not having a segmented crawbster as a pet. I'm willing to believe there would be some kid that would shine a flashlight at its eyes because they think doing that would be funny, not knowing what would happen.

Louie's notes

The sweet meat of this creature's right arm perfectly compliments dessert dishes, but may also be used as the primary ingredient in them. Segmented crawbster meat pies are a particular favorite of mine!

Dolphin Lander's notes

Although its vision is very poor, the segmented crawbster is still able to see sources of light surprisingly well. It must have incredibly sharp senses to detect prey through the ground below it, but how does it manage to find itself at a vantage point like that? How does it return to where it fell from? Can it?
