Attacks Eats pikmin

Template:Taxa Red Bulborbs are nocturnal creatures that sleep out in the open, exposing themselves to Pikmin attacks. Red Bulborbs are generally surprisingly apathetic creatures and won't arise from their sleep even if one of their own is under attack. That being said, however, some Dwarf Red Bulborbs may let out a screech when agitated, awaking any nearby bulborbs. If their eyestalks are attacked, they will panic and break off whatever they are doing to shake away their assailants.

Notes

Olimar's notes

"This large organism has the familiar mandibles and cranial morphology of the grub-dog family, as well as the characteristic bulging eyes. As with most grub-dogs, the creature's cranium comprises half of its total length and girth. Showing a scarlet abdomen with white spots, this creature is primarily nocturnal, choosing to prey upon smaller creatures returning to their nests. Originally classified as the spotty bulborb, further research has reclassified this species as the red bulborb. Subspecies of varied colors have recently been discovered, but academics are divided into two rival camps over how to handle their classification."

Louie's notes

"Plump specimens are best spit-roasted whole, stuffed with a lime and a slab of bacon. Baste frequently to ensure a magnificently moist haunch."

Alph's comments

"Structural flaws: eyestalks, back / Weight: 10 / Only a very confident designer would waive through issues like bright-red warning coloration and a tendency to sleep in broad daylight. There's no way a frontal assault on this thing will work, so we have to get creative. I'm thinking we should hit its back hard while it sleeps, or maybe target those thin-looking eyestalks."

Brittany's comments

"The white polka dots on red is quite a look. Something about it is familiar, but where— Ah. Right. It reminds me of the captain. Not the polka dots—I mean the way it snores as it naps in the sun."

Charlie's comments

"This red bruiser gobbles up Pikmin like candy. The standard approach is to attack from behind while it's still asleep. That may seem callous, but it would do the same to you if it could. Stow those feelings and strike!"

Tike's notes

"After I got here I discovered I landed on PNF 404 so yeah, this has been an already explored sign. I started to get messages from a friend of mine from Hocotate, saying that his grandfather told him stories of every creature here, some I can't name. Plus the so-called man-eating Red Bulborbs. He said that Red Bulborbs are quite common, and they eat Pikmin as well. Well, I believe him, because when I visited the planet, there were Red bulborbs. However, I don't know why they are considered scary. Plus when I came to the planet, they are not too common either. In fact, after I explored three chunks of land in this world: Forest of Beginnings, Crystal Citadel, and Trash Kingdom. I only mainly found Sheargrubs and Shearwigs. What happened to the Bulborb craze? Perhaps sheargrubs dominated the world."

Alice's notes

"Well, I know some act differently, at different times of the day. But never before I have seen such a mood swing like this before. Meet the Red Bulborb, the lazy, carefree creature, in the morning all gentle, and sweet. However in the night, they are in the vicious, mean, I want to rip your head off type of mood. I'm serious this is how they are. Maybe while one is sleeping, I will administer a stress-relieving pill. Maybe he won't be grumpy after his nocturnal nap this time."

Captain Pikmin's notes

"Well, we have known red bulborbs for a long time, so they kinda like our long time rival. Attack his back, when they're sleeping, and that should leave a mark on him. When he wakes up, avoid their jaws of doom. It should keep Pikmin away from being their nice bedtime snack."

The Red Bulborb returns in Pikmin V nearly identical to its incarnation in Pikmin 3, although it returns to having Red in its name. The one change is that the trick of hitting the Bulborb's eyes to distract it and make it spit out Pikmin will only work once; after that, it will close its eyes if there are Pikmin near and use its sense of smell. This prevents easy defeats of the Bulborb by stun-locking it into its flinching animation.

Notes

Brittany's notes

"Easily the trademark species of the grub-dog family, and maybe of the entire planet. The Red Bulborb gets its name from its spotty red behind, though it has had several name changes over time depending on the frequency of other Bulborb species. Its front half consists entirely of its face, with bulging eyes and a huge mouth that allow it to find and catch prey while hunting at night."

Olimar's notes

"If it is still asleep, its backside is a good place to rush it and deal lots of damage. Hitting it in the eye will cause it to recoil and drop any Pikmin it is eating, although it only works once."

Louie's notes

"Koppai now has a Pikmin Day in celebration of it being saved by the Pikmin, and they want me to come as a special guest to prepare Bulborb meats for a feast! A whole planet that loves food... I should move there."

Notes

Olimar's notes

"This creature was once classified as the spotty bulborb, but other spotted ones were found. The only grub-dog that can be classified as "Spotty" is the Spotty Bulbear. But chances are that won't be the case for much longer."

Ship's notes

"I feel like this creature is really disgusting. I mean like, just LOOK at its eyes. What has eyes like that? It also has a horrible odor (so what if I can't smell?). However, it does have a nice red color."

Charlie's notes

"Attack it from behind to gain the advantage! Its eyeballs are a weak point!"

Derrick's notes

"The creature’s stomach acids are a potent catalyst for decomposition reactions, capable of breaking down objects to their base compounds and decaying those compounds to water and other simple molecules. I should hunt down as many of these as I can!"

President]]'s notes

"This creature is not worth anything, except to be sold as a very large pet or as food..."

Sagittarius's notes

"A nice house pet, but requires a large sleeping mat and plenty of meat. Petting is not advised, as they may wake up believing they are being attacked by Pikmin. Owners must be the kind that can fall asleep even when someone is snoring, as this snores loud enough to scare nearby animals. Voracious appetite can be used to your advantage to create a fearsome burglar alarm. The burglars may not make it out intact, though."

Libra's notes

"If tanned like leather, this creature makes an excellent shoe or purse material, and is completely Pikmin-proof!"

Violet's notes

"This creature is so strong, so majestic... but Louie is so strong he could easily beat it any day!"

In Pikmin: Return

See: Pikmin: Return

In Pikmin: Return, the Red Bulbob returns along with its close cousins, the Sunset Bulbor and the Pale Bulborb, which only appear in beach areas and cave areas, respectively. The Red Bulborb is similar in appearance to the one in Pikmin 3. If Pikmin are thrown at its eyes or Purple Pikmin are thrown on its back, it will flinch and release any Pikmin in its mouth. If it swallows a Bomb-rock, the bomb-rock will explode and its body will expand quickly and slightly. Smoke will then seep out of its mouth and nose briefly. It will now be able to wander the whole map if it is disturbed, and if the Captain/Pikmin gets out of range, it will follow the shortest path back to its sleeping spot, and they have a walking path much like the Pikmin's carrying path, except it will not jump onto lilypads or use geysers, and will go through water and try to go around obstacles like fire and electricity. Bulborbs will now respond to different hazards. Its minor variants are listed below:

  • Pale Bulborb - the same as normal Red Bulborbs but with a few graphical and behavioral differences, such as a slightly longer body, a paler face and duller red on its rear, and inability to go in deep bodies of water.
  • Sunset Bulborb - the same as normal Red Bulborbs but with a few differences, such as a stouter body, tanner face, and spots, a more vibrant shade of red on its hide, and ability to roar and summon Dwarf Red Bulborbs to aid it in battle.

In Pikmin: The Return of the Puffmin

Template:Pikmin:ROTP Red Bulborbs are the same as they are in the canonical games, only they have better hearing, so they will be able to hear better when you kill their babies.

In Pikmin: Return to the Distant Planet

Template:PRDP Template:Infobox

Red Bulborbs are some of the most well-known enemies in the Pikmin franchise, and are often just as much of a staple for the games as the Pikmin themselves. Red Bulborbs are found in most areas sleeping out in the open, as they are nocturnal. As the day goes on, however, they'll become easier to wake, until sunset where they'll actively sniff the ground in search of prey. If encountered in a cave or other similarly dark area, they'll wander around said cave and won't sleep. These creatures aren't usually found outside during winter and can be found sleeping in caves, only waking up to respond to danger.

Swarming the creature from behind is a fairly effective strategy, however, it will shake Pikmin off as it wakes, making it a bit harder to deal with if attacked with a smaller swarm of Pikmin. Another effective strategy is to throw Pikmin onto it's face, as this deals more damage, and then throwing Pikmin onto its eyes should it manage to get any into its mouth, as this causes it to recoil and spit out any Pikmin in its mouth. In a pinch, feeding it a bomb rock will kill it immediately.

Red Bulborbs are the second most common enemy and is the Miniboss of the Landing Site. They are found everywhere except a number of caves, including the first cave in the game. They are usually found in Carnival Square, near their kids. In this game, they are known as Red Bulborb Adults.

In Pikmin: Treacherous Treasures

Red Bulborbs appear in Pikmin: Treacherous Treasures. These creatures are usually found sleeping out in the open. Attacking them from behind is safer than attacking them head on, as they can devour Pikmin in a short amount of time if you're not careful.

The Red Bulborb will be found asleep during the day, and will not attack until it is touched. Sneaking up behind it and swarming Pikmin on it's abdomen is the most effective strategy. If it happens to awaken, simply throw Pikmin on it's back and face to inflict damage while dodging it's bites towards the Pikmin. It's eyes serve as a weak point, and if it is being fought awake, attacking it's eyes will stun it, and make it release any Pikmin in it's mouth, and proceed to fling all Pikmin on it off.

If a bomb rock explodes near it, the explosion will startle it, making it jump up and look around for a bit. During this time the bulborb can see Pikmin and Captains further away than usual until it goes back to sleep.
