The Ravenous Whiskerpillar is a larval whiskerpillar in Pikmin 2 that is not harmful to Pikmin, but dangerous to Burgeoning Spiderworts. They remain under the ground near the locations of Burgeoning Spiderworts, appearing only when the plants bloom, at which point they proceed to burrow out of the ground, climb the plants, and then eat the berries directly off of them. This act is detrimental to leaders, as berries are necessary to make sprays. When confronted on a Burgeoning Spiderwort, a Ravenous Whiskerpillar will drop off the plant and burrow into the ground, providing a chance to attack it.

Notes

Olimar's observations

These little pests are even more troublesome this time than they were before, mainly due to the ship's converters not working properly, meaning we need 12 berries for a spray. Don't tell the ship I said this, but he was supposed to get them fixed the week before we left. For a robot, it's rather lazy...

Cookin' with Louie

Cook these creatures slowly shortly after they eat some berries to get far more flavor for no extra work!

The Ravenous Whiskerpillar is an item in Pikmin Kart that appears in item boxes commonly. When used, a Ravenous Whiskerpillar appears on the screen of another player who has an item. It will partially block their view and will eat the item that they are holding, causing it to disappear. It will eat items that have not stopped spinning yet, and if no kart has an item, then it will have no effect.

Ravenous Whiskerpillars appear in their usual capacity throughout the Forest of Seeming region of Pikmin V. They have received one notable upgrade, in defiance of Olimar's previous notes, which is the ability to complete their metamorphosis into an adult. If a Ravenous Whiskerpillar consumes ten Burgeoning Spiderwort berries of any kind and lives to the end of the day, it will pupate into a Whiskercoon the following day. If the Whiskercoon is not destroyed that day, it will become a Ravenous Whiskerfly on the following day as well.

Notes

Brittany's notes

This strange creature has become dependent on the energy-packed berries of the Burgeoning Spiderwort to survive. However, it has no means of controlling the availability of these berries, so it has to rely on its admittedly incredible survivability to wait for an opportunity to eat. This explains its unusually long larval period.

Olimar's notes

Even if one does not intend to collect a Spiderwort's berries, killing any infesting Whiskerpillars is a good idea. They possess no offense or defense and their removal prevents the growth, literally and metaphorically, of greater problems in the following days.

Louie's notes

The flavor of this grub is highly dependent on its diet, which as the name suggests, can vary wildly. Entrepreneurs are starting farms that control their food sources for specific tastes. I'm so proud!

Attacks Confuses Pikmin

The Ravenous Whiskerpillar is a returning enemy in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature resembles its Pikmin 2 incarnation. Not much about it has changed, as both they and the Painted Whiskerpillar can be found around spiderwort plants. They will climb the plants and eat the berries, leaving none to be converted into sprays. However, they have been given abilities to defend themselves. The Ravenous Whiskerpillar will only appear near spiderworts with ultra-spicy berries. As a result, the Whiskerpillar will emit an ultra-spicy spray when attacked. This seemingly hypnotic spray causes Pikmin to turn on and begin attacking each other. Although affected Pikmin can not kill each other, the distraction can allow the Whiskerpillar to escape and burrow back into the dirt.

The Ravenous Whiskerpillar returns, after many years of absence, in Pikmin: Spark. They retain their normal behaviors of eating Burgeoning Spiderwort berries, preventing captains from gaining sprays. The biggest addition they gain is an expanded family, with three new species, the Cleric Whiskerpillar, Thieving Whiskerpillar, and Patterned Whiskerpillar, as well as an adult form called the Stringfly.

Notes

Abel's medical journal

A nuisance, they constantly eat our medical supplies and their whiskers possibly contain germs. No practical medical use is found.

Lyn's sale review

The whiskers of these creatures make a strong but comfortable hairbrush that can untangle any knots.

  • Maturity age: 3-6 weeks
  • Average lifespan: 1-2 years
  • Breeding season: Only Stringflies can reproduce

Notes

Olimar's notes

Strange enough, it seems that these whiskerpillars have a certain set of reflexes that make them twitch, even when they are dead. Perhaps they still have a ravenous appetite for berries, even when dead?
