A mine is a proximity explosive that attaches to any surface or object it touches. It resembles a metal barrel with a glowing green light on top, and in Pikmin 4, a spike underneath. Pikmin can be issued to pick one up, and throwing that Pikmin will make it stick the mine onto whatever it hits. From that point on, the mine will be armed, and will detonate when it senses nearby movement. If an object with a mine attached is delivered to an Onion without the mine detonating, the explosive will slide off and fall on the ground.

In Pikmin 3, mines are exclusive to Bingo Battles and are only available from the item roulette. While armed, its light turns yellow, with the addition of two yellow beacon lights circling its equator, and upon detecting enemy movement, turns magenta alongside its beacon lights. The device regularly emits a distinct beep while armed and, when tripped, beeps faster for three seconds until exploding.

In Pikmin 4, mines can be crafted with raw material during explorations, or found from an item capsule during a Dandori Battle. The only difference is that their light remains green at all times, except when primed, during which it turns orange-yellow. As well, it glows progressively more orange as its countdown progresses.

Hazards Blunt force, explosion

A mine is a variant of bomb rock in Pikmin: Wide World found mostly in industrial environments such as Ancient Metalworks and its caves. They are metallic, rotund, roughly cylindrical objects with a green light on one end, a set of three claws on the other, and a smooth strip lined with holes around the equator between. They are of one size only, the size of bomb rocks in Pikmin 2. Despite their size and composition, they are surprisingly lightweight, able to be carried by one Pikmin or leader each. Mines almost always require the use of Rock Pikmin to reach initially. Mines are buoyant and will float in liquid bodies.

Mines are initially inert, lying on their side with their claws folded in, but when grabbed by a Pikmin or leader, will emit a gentle beep and their claws will unfold into a "ready" position. When put down, their claws will fold in again. When thrown, however, a mine will automatically orient its bottom side to face whatever surface or object it is thrown at and affix itself to the object using its now outstretched claws. Mines can attach themselves to the ground, slopes, and walls, enemies living or dead, and most other objects, so long as they have adequate space to latch onto, and are not made of metal, stone, or crystalline substances, which the claws can not pierce. After affixing itself, impacting a hard surface, or plunging into a liquid body, a mine will become armed, its light turning red and two yellow beacon lights circling its equator while it regularly produces a bleep sound. From this point onward, anything that enters the mine's range, including Pikmin and leaders responsible for arming the device, will cause it to prime; the mine will beep rapidly alongside its red light blinking for two seconds before detonating, harming, killing, damaging, or destroying anything in the blast. Mines have a blast power comparable to standard bomb rocks in terms of strength, range, and outward force. If a mine is somehow detached from its anchor point without it exploding, it will return to its inert state. Few enemies can utilize mines, but how they do so may vary. Many enemies that eat Pikmin can also, typically with a bit of time and effort, eat mines, but more often than not, the mines will detonate even before they can enter the creatures' stomachs. Regardless of whether it is armed, stabbing forces will send a mine rolling in the direction of the force and crushing forces will cause it to break apart harmlessly. Its explosion will cause any bomb rocks in the blast radius to instantly detonate, creating a destructive chain reaction when multiple bomb rocks are involved, but itself can not be made to detonate from explosions, only sent rolling away.

Some mines may be duds, indicated by a black light on top and limp mounting claws. They can not be primed, but respond as normal to blunt force. Dud mines are most effective when handled as if they were rocks, and shatter after two uses. Mines can not be made into duds whatsoever, even through exposure to fluids, but it can cause them to short-circuit and detonate prematurely when armed.

In ultra-spicy difficulty, mines have a slightly increased explosion size and power, and will detonate shortly after being detached from an object much like when triggered normally. Additionally, enemies are more careful to not consume them and tend to keep away from them if they are aware of any nearby.

Notes

  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #1 (all difficulties): Thrown mines will attach to pretty much anything that isn't too hard, so long as there's space.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #2 (all difficulties): Armed mines are very distinct from inert mines. Pay close attention to avoid catastrophe.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #3 (all difficulties): A mine will detonate approximately 2 seconds after something moves into its range.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #4 (all difficulties): Even if it doesn't latch onto a hard surface, the impact will still prime a mine.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #5 (all difficulties): Mines will float on fluid bodies, and automatically arm themselves there.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #6 (all difficulties): It is tricky, but not impossible, to detach a mine from an object, rendering it inert again.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #7 (ultra-spicy difficulty only): Mines are surprisingly powerful, and will detonate soon after being detached to avoid being compromised.
