The Metal Shearwig is a close relative of the Shearwig that inhabits areas that are rich in metal content. They differ from Shearwigs in that they can only be harmed from their vulnerable fleshy backsides. Attacking a Metal Shearwig from the front is futile and may result in Pikmin casualties or harm to leaders. Swarming is still a fast and reliable method of killing one, however. Throwing a Pikmin onto a Metal Shearwig's back will kill it instantly, much like with most mandiblards. Metal Shearwigs also differ from their greenish relatives in that throwing a Pikmin at them whilst they are airborne will not instantly kill them; instead, they will crashland onto the ground, unharmed. Other than these notable differences, Metal Shearwigs behave identically to normal Shearwigs.

Olimar's notes

"This species seems to have only recently evolved from ordinary Shearwigs, but still share similar behaviors. Metal Shearwigs seem more durable in combat than their relative due to their stronger carapace, which I can only assume is a result of its mineral-rich diet."

Louie's notes

"Remove the armor and mandibles from the head, and also the wings, and discard them. Cook over low heat, seasoning as needed, before serving. It makes for an excellent source of minerals!"

Shacho's notes

"I bet I could make the armor from these creatures into masks! I could sell them to people back on Hocotate to rake in some extra Pokos."

Dolphin Lander's notes

"What an interesting creature! They're just like a stronger version of the Shearwig that resides in metallic and concrete environments."
