Scientific name Pseudoarachnia navaronia
Family Arachnorb

The Man-at-Legs is a member of the arachnorb family that has no footpads to stomp on Pikmin using, and instead relies on its long-ranged attacks and speed, quickly skittering about to evade attacks but occasionally standing still to rest. When agitated, it stops in place, the panels of its underbelly separate, and a machine gun-like weapon extends from between them, tracking a nearby target by a laser sight before firing a barrage of explosive rounds at it. After firing a few dozen shots, with minimal breaks in between, it sheathes its weapon before continuing to move about. Cover can be used as protection from the projectiles, although they can simply be evaded.

The Man-at-Legs returns in Pikmin 2... Again?. It first appears in the Blackout Facility as its boss, where the lights shut off whenever it fires bullets and turn on again when it ceases fire. Its illuminant bullets are one of the few sources of precious light when there otherwise aren't any. Additionally, its bullets can damage and destroy the dirt gates used as cover in its arena, but not the metal ones that temporarily lift up at the press of a button.

Notes

Olimar's observations

This creature is truly one of the strangest creatures I've seen anywhere on this planet. I can't say that I understand how it works. It doesn't seem much different from last time, but that doesn't make it any less threatening. How does it manage to shoot at Pikmin without end? Shouldn't it have some sort of ammunition? I really wish that we knew more about this strange thing.

Cookin' with Louie

Although the meat is a bit on the metallic side, the oil makes a mouthwatering gravy or lubricative vinaigrette.

I'M BAAACK!!! – Man-at-Legs EX

The Man-at-Legs EX is a stronger, sapient, and better-equipped version of the Man-at-Legs serving as the third boss in Pikmin 4: Machine World. It is fought in Thermal Caverns, directly after the first fight against Robotimar, who pilots the mechanical spider from inside. An intense heat permeates the area where the Man-at-Legs EX is fought, causing Pikmin that move too much, or move too close to where the Orange Pikmin are, to burn. How close Pikmin are to burning because of the heat is indicated on a heat meter that is uniquely displayed only during this particular battle. Bomb rocks are also present at the heat field's boundaries.

The first phase of the battle opens with the Man-at-Legs EX using its classic machine gun attack, but its steady stream of shots can be simply evaded or prevented altogether by remaining close enough to the creature. To counter the latter strategy, the Man-at-Legs EX can execute a melee attack wherein it crouches, and then thrusts two sawblades towards nearby Pikmin to rapidly tear them to pieces. Additionally, if it senses Pikmin underneath itself, the Man-at-Legs EX will suck them up into its body by using a vortex of wind, turn them into Mushroom Pikmin, and then fling them at leaders and Pikmin by using a catapult. The Mushroom Pikmin will attack leaders directly but can be whistled to return them to normal. Phase two begins when the Man-at-Legs EX's health is depleted fully, playing a brief cutscene showing the top half of the Man-at-Legs EX's main body detaching from the bottom half, revealing Robotimar within as the top half begins flying around. Here, the body retains only its gun and melee attacks, while the head inherits the vacuum and Mushroom Pikmin conversion attacks, but also can launch explosives at Pikmin and leaders. After both halves of the body are defeated, Robotimar ejects himself from his position in the lower half of the body just before it and the other half explodes, scattering mechanical and biological parts everywhere.

The Man-at-Legs, in Pikmin: The After Years, is the same as it is in Pikmin 2. The one in Remembrance Ravine fires more projectiles than usual.

The Man-at-Legs also has a dark matter-infused variant, which is known as the "Dark Man-at-Legs". The Dark Man-at-Legs appears only in the Galactic Warpzone, the final cave, and it is a much stronger version of the Man-at-Legs that has much more health, faster and deadlier attacks, and the ability to use a new, unique attack in addition to its existing ones.

I have a very bad feeling about this... – The ship, upon discovering the Man-at-Legs

The Man-at-Legs is a boss in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature resembles most arachnorbs of its species, as its main body is a large orb. This orb, however, is covered in a dark yellow plating of metal scraps. Some scraps are missing, which reveals the creature's glowing molten insides. A red valve can be found on top of the orb as well. Three black, spindly legs allow for quick movement, and a larger, dark yellow claw acts as an anchor foot to drag the boss across the arena at large distances.

The Man-at-Legs can be found resting, its orb buried in the arena, with steam rising from its exhaust pipes. If approached, it will begin to shake violently before popping out of the ground, initiating the boss fight. The arachnorb can move very fast, and can easily move to any point in the area by extending its claw leg to the point of interest and using it as a grapple to quickly move its body to that spot. If the boss is damaged, or if it eventually decides to attack, the Man-at-Legs will suddenly open up its bottom hatchet on its main body, and a large gun with a laser sight will emerge. This gun will aim at the nearest Pikmin group for a few seconds before rapidly firing explosive projectiles. This is the most deadly attack of all arachnorbs, as it can wipe out the entire squad in seconds. However, the aim of the Man-at-Legs cannot penetrate terrain. After ten seconds of firing bullets, it will stop firing. At lower health, the arachnorb will increase its firing duration, first up to fifteen seconds, then twenty seconds at critical health. If any Pikmin stay near the Man-at-Legs' feet for too long, or if they try to attack them, the boss will slice at the Pikmin with its feet, which can kill them.

The explosive nature of the Man-at-Legs means that most Pikmin types are at extreme risk. Orange Pikmin, however, are immune to the explosive projectiles of the boss, so that makes them the best type to use in the fight. However, they can still be damaged by the sharp legs of the boss if they are swiped at. Defeating a Man-at-Legs for the first time will grant the "A Symbiotic Breakup" achievement.

In Overlord mode, the Man-at-Legs will fire magma explosives. The explosives will create a patch of fire that will last for twenty seconds after being ignited. Upon defeat, the boss will drop a single Volatile Dweevil.

Notes

  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #1: The Man-at-Legs cannot aim over elevated land, so find cover!
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #2: Don’t linger for too long near the legs, as the arachnorb may swipe at your group with them. They’re sharp and deadly!
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #3 (Overlord mode): The new ammunition of the Man-at-Legs is ignitable.

Olimar's notes

The Man-at-Legs is an example of a symbiotic relationship. Some form of artificial intelligence, or parasitic, biomechanical organism has taken over or is working together with this creature. The technology serves as a good hunting method and self-defense due to the deadly nature of the projectiles. Due to how demanding it is to fire off such projectiles, it’s only used as a last resort, as the legs of a Man-at-Legs are extremely sharp, and can be used to slice at attackers.

Louie's notes

Metal cannot be eaten. At least I think so. Too bad most arachnorbs are inedible.

President’s notes

GIANT SPIDER WITH A MECHA DEATH GUN!!! Debt collectors will cower at my arsenal of destructive spider weaponry! I’ll become the kingpin of the cargo industry!

Overlord’s thoughts

Such a violent and scary creature! I don’t know what artificial intelligence approached such a peaceful arachnorb, but my guess is that it was the same model that was adopted by A.X.E.M.

In Pikmin: Dimensional Breach, a single Man-at-Legs lurks at the very bottom of the Mad Doctor's Citadel, a dungeon in the Perplexing Tropics. It is identical to its Pikmin 2 appearance, with one additional stipulation: its bullets are classified as blunt force hazards. Thus, Rock Pikmin will not be damaged by the bullets, although they can still be knocked into the abyss by the force they exert. Upon death, the creature will spray out steam and explode, leaving behind the Forgotten Cutlass.

Notes

Olimar's observations

Man-at-Legs. Pseudoarachnia navaronia. Arachnorb family. This species of arachnorb fuses with machinery at a crucial point in its maturation process, allowing it to fire high-velocity rounds from the weapon encased within its torso. However, the Man-at-Legs itself is not in direct control of the weapon; rather, the weapon itself seems to autonomously acquire and attack targets. The Man-at-Legs itself has a gentle disposition, and as a member of the arachnorb family, it has no natural enemies. It is difficult to understand why such a docile species would suddenly develop such impressive offensive capabilities. The prevailing theory earlier on, when the species was first discovered, was that the machine had approached the beast first and proposed the symbiosis, but further review and new evidence have suggested that it may have been an artificial species entirely, although what the purpose of such a creation would be is still up for debate.

Louie's cookbook

The meat itself is fine, but it leaves a metallic aftertaste in your mouth. However, one creative way to use the beast is to siphon the oil from the mostly-mechanical lower half of its chassis, mix it with Dijon mustard, salt, and ground black pepper, and serve it as a dressing on your favorite salad.

Sagittarius' taming notes

As awesome as having a pet with a literal machine gun mounted on its belly might sound, the weapon fires and attacks independently of its host. Not counting the gun's tendency to fire on anything in sight, the insect itself is incredibly docile and sweet to have around. I'd recommend investing in a computer programmer to "train" the weapon before coming to a definitive decision on whether the Man-at-Legs is the right pet for you.

Libra's fashion guide

One would think that an arachnorb wouldn't have much to offer fashion-wise, but the distinct grayish-green of the metallic plating gave me an idea. That color would be absolutely perfect for the military, or for anyone who needs to sneak around in the dark and still be protected from harm. Unfortunately, metalworking is not my forte, so I might need some help with designing the armor made from this contraption.

Charlie's battle comments

Most of the monsters that have attacked us on this planet have had two things in common: they mean to do it, and they use all-natural means to decimate our Pikmin squads. The Man-at-Legs has neither going for it: not only does it carry a firearm with it at all times, but according to Olimar, it has zero control over what it shoots with its weapon. If this is the state that evolution is going towards, then I believe that we are doing the creature mercy by taking it down. Thankfully, despite being plated in metal, the creature's chassis is just as vulnerable to Pikmin as any monster on this planet.

Derrick's grimoire

Do I even need to say why I elected to hide the Forgotten Cutlass inside this mechanical monstrosity or did you just sort of skim through everyone else's notes? GUN. Enough said.
