The Emperor Bulblax is a larger grub-dog that hides in the ground to ambush prey, erupting from it when they come near, and then attempting to catch them with its long, sticky tongue or crush them under its immense weight. Its soft face is its only weak point to attack. It doesn't discriminate much when eating, so it can be led to swallow something a bit less tasteful than Pikmin; namely, bomb rocks. A unique plant, the Blaxcap, is stated to grow on its body.

In Pikmin 1, a gigantic Emperor Bulblax is the final boss. Only its mossy backside protrudes from the ground when first encountered. Along with being able to eat an unlimited amount of Pikmin in a single lick and crush any standing under it by hopping in place, the Emperor Bulblax may, after reaching below half-health, periodically leap high into the air to come crashing down upon its attackers. It drools uncontrollably when it wants to eat, and doesn't at all when it wants to jump.

In Pikmin 2, Emperor Bulblaxes are much smaller and weaker and lie in wait with only their eyestalks exposed. In place of their high jump attack, they may roar when at or below one-quarter health, calling any nearby Emperor Bulblaxes to the fight and causing existing Mitites to emerge from the ground. After death, an Emperor Bulblax's body can be recovered.

In Pikmin 4, Emperor Bulblaxes are again smaller, but with much more vegetation on their backsides, and so they once again disguise themselves as mossy rocks. They otherwise retain their behaviors from Pikmin 2, even including their roar attack. Emperor Bulblaxes of advanced age are referred to as Sovereign Bulblaxes.

In Hey! Pikmin, a giant Emperor Bulblax serves as the penultimate boss. Although it never leaves its central position in its arena, its attacks have a far reach. It attacks mainly by biting, but can also perform a horizontal tongue swipe before biting. If the Emperor Bulblax bites down on a bomb rock, it will chew on it until it blows up in its mouth, causing a small amount of damage and it to topple forward onto the ground, stunned and motionless. After recovering, it jumps up and burrows into the ground, and two Crumbugs emerge from behind the grass surrounding the buried bulblax a short while before the Emperor Bulblax itself emerges from the ground. After taking enough damage, rather than simply slowly turning to face its prey, the Emperor Bulblax will quickly turn by jumping. When the Emperor Bulblax prepares for a jump this way, two, later four, Sparrowheads emerge from behind it and flank the leaders and Pikmin, one on each side, swooping down at them while the bulblax prepares its licking attack.

An Emperor Bulblax has appeared in the story serial of Pikmin: Mysterious World. It was apparently the same Emperor Bulblax that swallowed the Secret Safe. It claimed it had been killed, a seeming paradox since it should not be alive to tell if it was killed. An explanation has not yet been given. Notably, the Emperor Bulblax was called the "Ancient One". It is unknown if this is its real name or just a title given to it by the Intelligence. Interestingly, the Emperor Bulblax smelled Sagittarius and mistook him for Olimar. Sagittarius is Olimar's son, which is likely the reason behind the mistake.

The Emperor Bulblax is a returning species of grub-dog in Pikmin 2... Again?. It is similar to its Pikmin 1 incarnation, being a colossal Red Bulborb with slimy tan skin, two clawed legs, a long purple tongue, and most notably, plant life growing on its back, including blaxcaps and bulborels. The Emperor Bulblax also has pink lips, and two red eyes mounted on stalks. The Emperor Bulblax is initially burrowed into the ground, only emerging when Pikmin and leaders come too close, knocking back any that are touching it. The Emperor Bulblax will then proceed to lumber toward them and slurp them up with its tongue, but if there are any at its feet, it will instead hop in place to crush them. When it licks, it will leave a puddle of slimy drool where its tongue touches the ground, and this puddle will persist for some moments before drying up. The Emperor Bulblax can also roar, making all Pikmin except Purple Pikmin panic and scatter. When damaged enough, the Emperor Bulblax will begin periodically leaping high into the air, so much so that only its shadow can be seen. The impact of it landing will result in an earthquake that knocks back Pikmin and leaders and also causes boulders to fall. Once defeated, the Emperor Bulblax will shrink.

Notes

Olimar's observations

Well, for the third time, I find these creatures are back and ready to eat. This time they seem stronger than before, but still nothing compared to the monstrous one I fought on my first visit. That one really was a beast. I've come so far with my exploring abilities since those days. I'm impressed I was even able to pull it off back then! Still, I shouldn't act like these are no fuss now. It seems that the best way to fight is to spam Pikmin right onto it's head as it is still emerging. Its cheap, sure, but it works. I frankly don't care what it takes, the important thing is to have as few Pikmin lost as possible.

In Pikmin Chronicles, an Emperor Bulblax serves as the first boss, appearing towards the end of chapter one. It is found buried in the ground on the last sublevel of the cave it is in, with both its eyes and moss-covered back exposed. The Pikmin walk up to it, unaware of what it is until it is too late. It initially is too strong to kill and must be fled from by escaping the cave. Once on the surface, the ground shakes and a roar is heard. A few seconds later, the upset Emperor Bulblax bursts through the ground and terrorizes the landing site, which is where the boss battle takes place, It is about the same size as the one in Pikmin 1 and is killed the same way. After it is killed, its body is taken away, and it is realized that the hole the Emperor Bulblax created when it busted through the ground has opened up a new path.

The Emperor Bulblax appears in Pikmin Eco as the main boss of Bulblax Treetops in Bounty Canopy. It is exceptionally larger than any other encountered bulborb species. It is initially found buried under the ground, with only its eyestalks visible, and remains inactive until approached by Pikmin or leaders, prompting it to then burst out of the ground to attack. Its main attack is lashing its large tongue out to slurp up unsuspecting Pikmin, but after shaking off some Pikmin, it jumps into the air and slams onto the ground. This attack launches Pikmin back, and temporarily paralyzes leaders, also dealing slight damage to them. The hard layer covering its backside renders it face its only weakpoint. It and the Hex-at-Legs are the only bosses that the Hoverpack is required to use to fight against. Using the Hoverpack to stay off the ground is the only way for leaders to avoid the effects of the Emperor Bulblax's tremor attack.

Notes

In-game entry

The Emperor Bulblax is the largest known male species of the grub-dog family, only smaller than the Empress Bulblax. It's intriguing how this species tends to grow much larger when above ground whereas the size severely decreases for those who live underground. This has been classified as environmentally effective growth, as smaller subspecies are better fitted to live underground than larger ones, who themselves are more durable due to competition for food. It buries itself out of sight and only attacks once a prey item gets close.

The Emperor Bulblax is a species of grub-dog patriarch appearing in Pikmin Evolution. It retains the appearance of its Pikmin 4 incarnation, though with the addition of each one's back having slightly different plant life rather than it being the same across all of them. Another and more noticeable change is the different sizes they can be. Rather than each size being its own separate creature, the Emperor Bulblax can be seen in three distinct sizes, small, medium, and giant, each size with its own strengths and weaknesses. All three sizes share similar fighting styles, that being licking anything, namely Pikmin and leaders, in their way with their long sticky tongues and crushing anything under their body. Also, each size of Bulblax can be found in distinct locations; the small size acts more like a miniboss in the overworld as well as in dens, the medium size is a more challenging opponent in the way of an objective, and the giant size is reserved for the most difficult locations to be explored. Each size helps bridge the gap between the regular Emperor Bulblax and the Sovereign Bulblax.

The small Emperor Bulblax has the lowest health and fastest movement and attack speed of the three sizes, the giant Emperor Bulblax has the most health and lowest speed, and the medium Emperor Bulblax, with 50% more health than the small size, is in-between. The small Emperor Bulblax can only eat up to 10 Pikmin at a time compared to the other two sizes' 20. Small Emperor Bulblaxes can execute their modest jumping attack several times in a row due to their lighter frame, but the other two sizes can only execute one jump at a time, and the giant Emperor Bulblax can cause boulders to fall when it lands. The small Emperor Bulblax has a weak roar that can only knock Pikmin and leaders back and summon other members of its pack, while the medium and giant Emperor Bulblaxes' roars can also induce panic in Pikmin. Lastly, unlike the lone medium and giant Emperor Bulblaxes, small Emperor Bulblaxes have the benefit of numbers, often found in groups ranging from as few as two to as many as five, so what they lack in destructive power, they make up for in sheer overwhelming numbers.

Despite the numerous differences between the three sizes of Bulblax, fights against them are largely the same as they ever were, their face being the prime target and their mossy backsides being immune to attack. They also all share one common weakness, explosives, namely orange syrups, as a Bulblax that ingests one will suffer internal damage and be briefly stunned. The primary reason to hunt Emperor Bulblaxes is due to the discovery of Bulborels, rare mushrooms that grow only on their backs and can be harvested after their defeat. Bulborels are immensely valuable as they instantly tame any creature they are fed to, making the Emperor Bulblax a highly sought-after creature due to providing this unique service. Overall, the Emperor Bulblax is a returning foe that still manages to present new challenges to keep conflicts against them refreshing with all their differences.

Notes

Ivy's journal

One of our planet's premier apex predators, the Emperor Bulbax is a lot more gentle than you would expect. Well, not to us. of course. Evidence suggests that the Emperor Bulblax's signature pronounced chin may be the result of storing regurgitated food to feed to its mate, the Empress Bulblax, due to their inability to move. Young Emperors seem to show a preference for attacking in packs, with the packs becoming more spread out and fragmented as they age and grow. These recent behaviors are quite fascinating and I wonder what other secrets this iconic megafauna may have.

Leni's recipe book

I personally like to remove the eyeballs of this creature and stuff them with pellets and nectar before baking them for three hours. The result is what I call "meat cups". They're quite unpopular with both the Pikmin and our young one, but adults seem to like them.

The Emperor Bulblax is a returning boss appearing in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature retains its design throughout the series. The Emperor Bulblax is the smallest and weakest of all three bulblaxes. The beast can be found buried in the ground, rarely by other Emperor Bulblaxes. If approached, they will erupt from the ground, initiating the battle.

Emperor Bulblaxes will lumber around slowly to get to their prey. They will recoil backward slowly before thrusting out their large tongue to slurp up to twenty Pikmin. If attacked, they will perform a short hop, launching off any Pikmin attached and crushing any Pikmin at its feet. The Emperor Bulblax will also emit a ferocious roar if threatened, sending Pikmin into a panic, and summoning up to two Sparrowheads, a homage to the Hey! Pikmin boss fight. If an Emperor Bulblax consumes a bomb rock, it will take damage and be stunned for a few moments. A strange interaction with the Bulblax and Iguana Pikmin is that they can latch their tongues onto the Bulblax when it attacks. Once one latches their tongue, they can hold it in place for three seconds, and for another three seconds each time another tongue is latched on. If thirty Iguana Pikmin are attached, they will pull and slam the beast into the ground, stunning it. Defeating an Emperor Bulblax for the first time will grant "The Emperor Dethroned" achievement.

The Emperor Bulblax appears as a miniboss in Pikmin: Interstellar Cryptid, encountered sparsely throughout the Giant's Bald Spot. These ancient predators hide beneath the ground with only their mossy backs showing. When approached, they emerge with a resounding roar. They mainly attack by lashing their tongues at Pikmin, making short jumps to flush them off their bodies or crush those caught beneath, and roaring to make the squad freak out. Their roars also make Mitites nearby unearth themselves and scurry as well. Throwing bomb rocks and other explosive devices onto their tongues will cause them to be stunned by the device exploding within their gut.

A larger version of this miniboss, the Sovereign Bulblax, appears as the fourth night expedition boss.

Notes

Olimar's notes

A living fossil of the grub-dog lineage, many have assumed this lumbersome behemoth is a patriarchal red bulborb due to its common title. Whether or not his conception has any truth to it is still a commonly discussed subject in the science sector. Its backside possesses a massive, calcified hump as hard as stone. During the monsoon season, rainwater allows for moss and small plants to congregate on this hide, perfecting a disguise that's hard to see through. It hunts in packs by burying itself face first, striking prey with its adhesive tongue when it gets the jump on them. A species of mushroom, the blaxcap, is known to survive only on the back of a young emperor bulblax, meaning the conservation of the fungus relies on the conservation of the emperor as well.

Louie's notes

Sever the tongue from its body and cube it. Marinate these cubes in olive oil overnight. The day after, put these cubes in a stock with diced carrots, chopped potatoes, and thinly sliced chives. Upon serving, add a bread roll to the side to absorb whatever stock you don't catch with your spoon. The rest of the morsel aside from its tongue is nothing to write home about yet, but becomes more flavorful with age.

Bentley's notes

Although I like investigating the small things, larger beasts do strike me with a sense of awe. One such giant is why we're here after all, heh. The mossy backside of these guardians of the forest could be home to multiple species of plant, fungi, and invertebrates science has yet to let in on. Being a cryptozoologist, I appreciate the gesture.

Eloise's notes

I don't like it one bit! I was planning on taking a seat on top of a nice rock to alleviate my footaches (or is it feetache?); it was even matted in a layer of cushiony moss to boot! When I went to inspect the rest spot, however, the floor quaked and a massive tongue rocketed towards me! Sorry about my dramatic disposition, it's just... it's just a lot to take in, okay?

The Emperor Bulblax is a grub-dog patriarch appearing in Pikmin: Wide World. It is the patriarch of Red Bulborbs, its robotic counterpart is the Emperor Bulbot, and the Ancient Bulblax is a very specific Emperor Bulblax of advanced age. The Emperor Bulblax remains buried almost completely in penetrable ground, always on land and never under liquid, with only its eyes and eyestalks, the topmost portion of its back, or both visible. It will violently erupt from the ground when touched or walked upon by Pikmin and leaders, knocking them away a fair distance and often down before jumping to its feet. Afterward, the Emperor Bulblax will trudge toward any in its territory with the intent to slurp them up with its massive purple tongue, although it can also inadvertently kick away Pikmin at its feet as it walks. Leaders it licks up are not spat out, but swallowed, and may only escape its stomach by continually struggling, causing the creature itself to regurgitate them. When alone and active, an Emperor Bulblax will slowly and aimlessly stomp about its territory before eventually returning to a spot near its original resting position and burrowing there, its orientation revealed after the dust clears. A notable characteristic of the Emperor Bulblax is that it will come to the aid of distressed empress bulblaxes, specifically the Empress Red Bulblax.

The Emperor Bulblax has the typical bulblax physiology, being a comparatively larger grub-dog with a rigid facial structure, bulbous nose, enlarged tongue, and two beady eyes mounted on drooping eyestalks. It has cream-colored skin, blue eyes, and most notably, a naturally armored backside covered in vegetation and with stones of various sizes embedded within. Its lips have sagged with age, forming signature jowls, its fangs hidden behind them. Its stubby yet muscular legs terminate in feet that have a thick, white nail at the end of each of its two toes.

An Emperor Bulblax can make for a challenging foe due to its varied and powerful attacks. Only its face and legs are vulnerable, as attacking from the rear is futile. Its face is less resilient to attack than its legs, but targeting it makes Pikmin liable to be eaten; likewise, attacking its legs can easily result in them being buried or crushed by a quick hop depending on if the ground underneath is soft or hard. Because its eyes are so small, trying to attack them will not put the Emperor Bulblax at a disadvantage or have any sort of effect, contrary to many other grub-dogs. The Emperor Bulblax also has several ways of defending itself directly, such as by licking off and eating any Pikmin latched onto its lips, or performing a short, stationary jump to force them to the ground and deal with any Pikmin swatting its legs. Starting from when its health reaches one-third, an Emperor Bulblax may unleash a ferocious roar should it feel overwhelmed, which not only scares Pikmin into a panic but also attracts the attention of other Emperor Bulblaxes of any kind in the local area.

In ultra-spicy difficulty, the Emperor Bulblax may be completely hidden underground with no part of it visible, easily resulting in unexpected surprise assaults. Upon reaching half-health, it will begin periodically using a new battle tactic, and that is to jump high in an arc, which is used to evade or crush Pikmin. Such a maneuver, which takes only mere moments to prepare, is denoted by it squatting down progressively further while trembling and its eyes widening before finally leaping into the air.

Olimar's comments

PWW Captain Olimar icon.png The emperor bulblax is perhaps the highest and mightiest of all grub-dogs. It is revered by its lesser kin, and no predators dare target it. During hibernation, mud sticks to its back, which serves as a fertile site for vegetation to grow on and rocks to be lodged in, forming a thick, protective hide.

Shacho's comments

PWW President icon.png I like to think of myself as the emperor bulblax of Hocotate Freight. We're mean and big, and nobody messes with me! Ah, who am I kidding...

Marie's comments

PWW Marie icon.png First and foremost, only those who own quite a few acres of land should own an emperor bulblax. It's sure to be torn up by the big guy, but at least it'll be happy. It enjoys periodic visits from those it trusts most, but can only tolerate so much interaction before it starts to get annoyed.

Louie's comments

PWW Louie icon.png Remove the tongue, cut it into small pieces, and pan-fry with olive oil, diced onions, and sliced peppers. The tongue has the texture of cow liver, making it a fulfilling meal when complemented with the proper flavors.

Dolphin Lander's comments

PWW Dolphin Lander icon.png Olimar hasn't mentioned this in his notes, but emperor bulblaxes come to be when male grub-dogs find a perfect mate, triggering a hormonal response in themselves and their mate that radically changes their physical and behavioral characteristics. Basically, once a grub-dog finds its soulmate, both of them undergo a transformation. Interesting...
