Bulbmin are a parasitic species of Pikmin that resemble bulborbs, hence the name. An adult Bulbmin, resembling a Red Bulborb, is followed by up to ten juvenile Bulbmin, which resemble Dwarf Red Bulborbs, both with a stem atop their back. They wander about, patrolling an established path. The adult Bulbmin is quite aggressive, and when the adult Bulbmin is defeated, the juvenile Bulbmin will panic until whistled, at which point they will join the leader's squad. At this point, they can be used like normal Pikmin. They are resistant to all fire, electricity, water, and poison. As beneficial as their abilities may seem, they cannot leave the caves with the group, for an unknown reason.

Bulbmin are a returning "Pikmin" type appearing in Pikmin 2... Again?, after over two decades of absence, and this time completely reworked due to the Glow Pikmin's appearance. They are first found in one of the Giant's Playground's caves, the Fortress of Bricks, where both the adults and their young are found. The Bulbmin is a Red Bulborb, but with a more yellowish skin, especially for the juvenile Bulbmin, and the start of the legs lack the red tinge from their back, and sprouting from its back is the Pikmite's vermillion, potentially pink-petaled stem. The stem also glows tan rather than green while the Bulbmin is idle, due to the appearance of the Green Pikmin. For adult Bulbmin, which are roughly half the size of a Red Bulborb, the stem is shorter due to their larger size compared to their young, and for juvenile Bulbmin which are roughly the size of a Pikmin of average size and build, have longer stems. Bulbmin have a unique voice, being the same as the Red Bulborb's but higher-pitched, and the juveniles have unique animations due to their unique body shape. Examples of those animations include it carrying using its snout, and spinning horizontally rather than vertically during a throw. Upon death, Bulbmin release a vermillion-colored soul that looks to be a mix between those of Pikmin and enemies, presumably from both the host and the Pikmite, as the Pikmite dies upon the expiration of its host. Due to the Pikmite and its host being separate entities, Bulbmin lack an Onion, akin to their Pikmin 2 incarnation. As well, Bulbmin are only found in caves, but can be brought out of them, to the surface, where they can be stored in the Hocotate Ship. Judging by the dialogues and how Pikmin 2... Again? takes place in an alternate universe, Bulbmin, alongside the Waterwraith, were never discovered before its events; for the Bulbmin, this is due to its drastic changes.

The adult Bulbmin retain their habit of wandering an area with the juveniles following it, similar to the Spotty Bulbear. While the juvenile Bulbmin accompanying it won't attack leaders or their Pikmin, the adult Bulbmin will, and can eat Pikmin at an alarming rate despite its size and health. The juveniles, on the other hand, have many changes regarding their behaviors as compared to their parents. While they still run around in panic upon their parent's death, they are no longer resistant to fire, water, electricity, and poison, and explosions, acid, crushing, and fog are instantly fatal to them as with other Pikmin types. However, they can not be eaten, and are ignored by enemies unless they attack; the only exception is with the Pesky Grabbit, which always targets juvenile Bulbmin. Juvenile Bulbmin have below-average speed and, because of their lack of arms, are incapable of latching onto enemies, bouncing off them instead. Upon landing from bouncing off a target, a juvenile Bulbmin will proceed to bite at it from the ground, dealing above-average damage but at a slow attack rate comparable to the Green Pikmin's. Thus, they are essentially useless against airborne enemies and enemies with elevated weakpoints unless they are somehow forced within reach. On the surface, however, they inflict only average damage, making them, like Glow Pikmin, optional to use. Perhaps the biggest change the juvenile Bulbmin has undergone is the health system it now has. A juvenile Bulbmin's health will go down every time an enemy attacks it or it is knocked to the ground, and hazards will steadily drain its health until it is whistled. Any that are hurt will steadily recover health over time, or instantly fully heal upon drinking nectar. When buried in the ground, which can only be accomplished by enemies capable of doing so to Pikmin, juvenile Bulbmin will not automatically advance in maturity over time as other Pikmin types do; this is due to the Pikmite being within the host, rather than pulling nutrients from the ground the host is buried in. As such, the rarest maturity for a Bulbmin is the bud stage, which can only be seen by reverting its maturity from the flower stage. Like Glow Pikmin, Bulbmin are rejected from candypop buds, looking around confused after being spat out; this is for the same reasons as to why a Bulbmin Onion does not exist. Lastly, Bulbmin can survive sunset if left behind, and can be found in the area's landing side the following day. Upon death, a juvenile Bulbmin will usually collapse and disappear into a puff of harmless blue and purple gas, akin to when an enemy dies, but will disappear shortly after without collapsing if killed by knockback from eating, explosions, and acid.

Notes

Olimar's notes

Bulbmin / Pikmin family / Pikminidae parasiticus. "Bulbmin" is the name for Red Bulborbs hosts of a parasitic Pikmin species known as Pikmite, not to be confused with the Hermikmin, another parasitic species that inhabits objects like a shell. The Pikmite starts as seeds, though they can not bury themselves like the other Pikmin species; this is because... their goal is to be eaten. When a Bulborb Larva eats a Pikmite, it will grow inside the host. While its stem is not visible at first, after the Bulborb Larva develops its legs, it develops its signature spots prematurely, a step in the developmental cycle that only occurs when transitioning into adulthood. I don't know what causes that. Anyway, the Pikmite attaches to the host's ganglia and injects endocrine disruptors. The juveline Bulbmin are friendly, and will never attack other Pikmin, or us. However, the adult Bulbmin is as aggressive as any grub-dog species and will attack anything that comes near. The young Bulbmin are never attacked by other Bulborbs unless provoked, since they are still grub-dogs, so other Bulborbs will still recognize them as of their kind. I never expected to see this kind of creature.

Louie's notes

What do I do now??

President's notes

This thing reminds me of a weird dream I had of many Bulborbs with a Pikmin-like stem. I thought it never existed and... Apparently, my dream became true as we can see by the discovery of the Bulbmin.

Hocotate Ship's notes

What kind of odd Pikmin is this? Well, not a Pikmin, but still, I have never seen a bulborb with a stem. I would think this is a new hybrid, but according to the so-known Olimar, it's at least a relief, they are actually Red Bulborbs, but hosts of a parasitic Pikmin species named "Pikmite"... Then... it controls their mind or something. Strange, now the Pikmin are controlling bulborbs now?

Cosmicaptain's thoughts

I would say the creatures not attacking the smaller Bulbmin "charmed" by their cute appearance, because, well, just look at them. Who wouldn't find them cute enough to not attack them? The adults, however, scare me because they aren't friendly, unlike their young.

Unknown commenter's comments

If I ever saw one, I would be horrified, not because I find them scary, but cause I just didn't expect to see a Bulborb with a stem. Well, not only that, but the most basic foe is now your ally, for the juvenile Bulbmin

In Pikmin Kart, Bulbmin are items that are rarely found from item boxes. After being thrown, they grab onto a random kart in their range. They'll slightly slow the kart they bit onto, but it is possible to shake them off. They won't fall off if the driver drives into a fire geyser, a body of water, electrical wires, or gas pipes. As with all Pikmin items, the Whistle item can protect a player from Pikmin attacks and steal them for themself.

PSP Bulbmin.png

In Pikmin SP, Bulbmin are the same as the ones from Pikmin 2, but there is a larger variety of them. They can also be seen aboveground and every type shares a single Onion. The Onion is found in the Leafy Grotto, the second cave in Dim Jungle. Once their Onion is obtained, they may be taken aboveground.

Below is an explanation of what each type does:

  • Bulbmin – standard Bulbmin.
  • Snow Bulbmin – takes five seconds longer for an enemy to eat, due to being covered in short, scratchy hair.
  • Orange Bulbmin – a more alert Bulbmin that dodges out of the way if it is going to be attacked.
  • Bulbearmin – stays closer to leaders and protects them if any enemies attempt to attack them.
  • Purple Bulbmin – has the abilities of Purple Pikmin, but walks with half the speed of flowered Purple Pikmin when at leaf-stage maturity.
  • Fiery Bulblaxmin – deals as much damage as a Red Pikmin.
  • Watery Bulblaxmin – has a fifty percent chance to get away if it is grabbed by an enemy, seventy percent if it is a fire enemy, and forty percent for electrical enemies.
  • Electrical Bulblaxmin – has a thirty-five percent chance to stun an enemy when it is thrown onto one. Does not apply to bosses or electrical enemies.
  • Toxic Bulblaxmin – slowly deals poison damage to enemies that it is attacking. Does not apply to obstacles, hazards, or poison enemies.

Bulbmin, in Pikmin: Attack of the Breadbugs, have the same role as they did in Pikmin 2, but they and their respective Onion can be found in the Hidden Territory of the Land of Wonders. Only juvenile Bulbmin are present. As before, Bulbmin are immune to all elemental hazards. However, Bulbmin cannot be accessed until Purple Pikmin are found, as only Purple Pikmin have to ability to demolish reinforced gates. Bulbmin can be extremely useful for destroying the Galactic Breadbug if chosen to be used. However, Purple Pikmin are still mandatory, as only they are able to deplete the Galactic Breadbug's health while it is in its stone form.

The Bulbmin is a returning enemy appearing in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature retains its appearance from Pikmin 2. The Bulbmin can only be found wandering about underground, leading smaller Bulbmin. These smaller Bulbmin do not help the adult when fighting, and up to ten can follow an adult. The adult Bulbmin is vicious, being fast and able to eat up to five Pikmin in a single bite. If killed, the smaller Bulbmin will go into a frenzy until they are whistled.

The smaller Bulbmin serve as Pikmin allies, being able to be commanded like normal Pikmin. Bulbmin are immune to every elemental hazard, including the new hazard, oil. Bulbmin do not have any damage multipliers, however. These Bulbmin can be converted into other Pikmin types if thrown into a candypop bud. Bulbmin cannot be brought out of the cave they were found in, making it beneficial to turn them into other Pikmin types before leaving.

Bulbmin appear in Pikmin: Together Forever. They can be brought to the surface, where their complete hazard immunity shines the most, but comes at a cost: the detection range from enemies is larger for Bulbmin than for other Pikmin, making it inconvenient to get around places populated by enemies. Bulbmin can be challenging to reach in the first place, as they can climb walls, and keep, as they will begin to roam when left idle for more than 2-and-a-half minutes. Bulbmin often take paths other Pikmin are unfamiliar with, making travel slower, and take arbitrary paths while carrying objects, preferring to take the scenic route instead of heading directly to their destination. The only enemy that can shake off a Bulbmin is a Giant of Destruction.

The Red Bulbmin is a parasitic Pikmin host appearing in Pikmin: Wide World as a Red Bulborb. As an adult Red Bulbmin roams, it will periodically stop to rest with any juveniles accompanying it. The sleeping adult will awaken upon being harmed or touched, or hearing a sound loud enough to rouse it from its slumber, but the juveniles wake up much easier and often inadvertently awaken the adult. When an adult Red Bulbmin finds a leader or non-parasitic Pikmin, it will walk to and attempt to bite those leaders and eat those Pikmin. As with all parasitic Pikmin hosts, Red Bulbmin lack data files as all data files regarding hosts are instead listed in the parasitic Pikmin's Piklopedia entry.

Red Bulbmin greatly resemble Red Bulborbs, but smaller and with a red stem sprouting from their back. They possess the typical bulborb characteristics, having a tapered snout, light skin, and a red rump with white spots. Their stem is near where their face color transitions to the crimson hue of their backside. Although their eyes appear normal at a glance, they have gray pupils.

Juvenile Red Bulbmin have average mobility, throw range, and dig speed, and lack any hazard resistances. They can hit with their stems and bite for average damage but can't latch onto anything with their feet alone. When thrown at an enemy, a juvenile Red Bulbmin may either simply bounce off of it for low damage, or bite onto it and begin gnawing to inflict above-average damage until shaken off with sufficient effort. Under the proper conditions, a thrown juvenile Red Bulbmin will appear ferocious and emit a sharp sound as it prepares to latch on. However, this special gnawing attack can only be used on parts of enemies that other Pikmin can latch onto normally to pummel. Juvenile Red Bulbmin lift objects with their snout but can not carry them without the help of another Pikmin, a capable juvenile host, or a leader.

Despite their diminished size, adult Red Bulbmin can still pose a threat, especially if their wandering allows them to catch a leader or their non-parasitic Pikmin off-guard. Charging Pikmin at an adult Red Bulbmin is only a good idea if it is asleep, and even then the commotion caused by the juveniles sensing danger would wake it up quickly. While it is awake and active, Pikmin can be thrown at the adult's eyes to inflict damage to the creature, make it flinch, and cause it to spit out any Pikmin it may have in its mouth. Upon death, an adult Red Bulbmin will groan in agony and then drop to the ground, dead.

In ultra-spicy difficulty, an adult Red Bulbmin can use its stem to scoop up to 3 juveniles following it and sling them at leaders and non-parasitic Pikmin, triggering any special behaviors those juveniles may have when thrown.

Notes

Olimar's comments

PWW Captain Olimar icon.png The red bulbmin is the most well-known example of Pikmin taking advanced measures to survive, by assuming control of a host's immune system and using its body for their benefit. The red bulborbs they control are diminished in size, seemingly a common side-effect seen in many parasitic Pikmin hosts.

Shacho's comments

PWW President icon.png Pikmin seem to be very creative in surviving on this planet. I'm glad I have employees as resourceful as the Pikmin! At least, I'd hope they are...

Marie's comments

PWW Marie icon.png While the adult red bulbmin deliberately resist the call of a whistle and can be hard to befriend because of this rebellious habit, the juveniles listen incredibly well. I would imagine so, assuming they follow their parents around as protection. The juveniles are quiet and peaceful, but just like their parents, they grow up to be rebellious.

Louie's comments

Dolphin Lander's comments
