Family Breadbug

Breadbugs are creatures that remarkably resemble bread rolls; hence, they are the namesake of the breadbug family. They can not harm leaders or Pikmin directly, but they can drag both small and rather large objects into their dwellings. If Pikmin are holding onto something when a Breadbug pulls it into its nest, they die.

Breadbugs in Pikmin 4: The World to Free play a more important role, in that they happen to steal the parashield key needed to reach the Trash Kingdom's boss. They must be chased down as a result, and don't come back after being defeated.

Notes

Tike's notes

These creatures' behavior patterns are oddly different from the notes by the founder Captain Olimar. They tend to be more pesky and evil than I thought. It's almost as if they are stealing the keys on purpose! Nah, I believe it is just a coincidence, but furthermore, they seem to be able to eat three times their weight. Now that's something.

Alice's notes

As a psychologist, I can sense the true feelings in animals. The breadbugs are actually kind, but greedy and careless creatures. Heesh, they even eat their own kind! However, the breadbugs we found seem to have a strange pulse in them. If so, they aren't being a breadbug and I have an eerie thought they might be in trouble. Argh, if only I could help them.

Captain Pikmin's notes

Normally I have a solution to these guys, but oddly these ones are more clever than the ordinary breadbug. So I hate to say this, but you might have to use your own brains on this one.

In Pikmin Forever, Breadbugs have an improved appearance, as wrinkles are visible in their blubber and their eyes glow in the dark. Breadbugs reside in dark locations and emerge from their dens to roam in search of food. It sometimes tries to drag a sleeping bulborb to its den, but the bulborb quickly wakes up and moves to another location, not at all minding the breadbug. Breadbugs can be knocked over by Mushroom Pikmin or Rock Pikmin, exposing their soft underbelly, which can be attacked. They have a bit more health than a dwarf bulborb. A flipped Breadbug can be carried to an Onion, but not the ship, to deal lots of damage to it, although the Breadbug can get up while being carried. If a Breadbug carrying spoils to its den is being overpowered by Pikmin, it will drop the spoils.

Breadbugs in Pikmin V have undergone some minor but still significant changes. Their damage is now hardcoded, meaning that a direct hit from a normal-sized Pikmin will do one damage, a direct hit from a Purple Pikmin will do two, a small bomb rock will do five, and both a large bomb rock and getting pulled into the Onion or Hocotate Hauler will do ten, killing it immediately. Additionally, when a Breadbug flips when hit, it completes its roll in the direction it started in, instead of rolling back to its original position to be hit again.

Notes

Brittany's notes

The eponym for the Breadbug family due to its unusually thick segments that protect it from most attacks and happen to look like a bread roll. It is a greedy scavenger who will carry anything back to its den - edible or otherwise - and store it for a later date. The den itself seems to be a live plant that lives symbiotically with the Breadbug, providing it with protection while the Breadbug provides food.

Olimar's notes

The best way to take care of these pests is to make a trap by leaving out an easy-to-carry object, like a Pellet, and then overpowering it once it inevitably comes. If you don't have any good items, it is possible to damage a Breadbug with a direct hit to its back, though it is a very slow method of killing it.

Louie's notes

You might be wondering why such a large and energy-packed quantity of food fetches such a low price. The answer is that one half of it is blubber and the other half has no taste.

Rye is the Breadbug that appears in Pikmin: Antarctic Survival. Rye is a useful creature to Awaken as a resident, as her carry strength is well above average and her thick blubber hide provides her solid defense as well as protection from the cold of the Antarctic. However, Rye can only be encountered in the Chilly Valley once the Diamond Settlement's level reaches at least 2.

Rye is obsessed with hoarding things, fittingly for a Breadbug. She is especially fixated on gathering and storing food items and survival supplies, and will become aggressive toward the other residents if they try to take or even touch "her stuff". Her bossiness and difficulty sharing things with anyone can result in hostility and arguments between her and the other Diamond Settlement residents. Ultimately, it is revealed that her obsession with hoarding objects stems from her fear of running out of supplies due to poor resource management. Rye originally lived with a group of Breadbugs who recklessly hoarded and consumed their possessions without any planning, a bad habit that she partook in along with them. One particularly harsh winter, the warren of Breadbugs ran out of food, resulting in the group of Breadbugs nearly being wiped out as they were forced to venture out into the hostile winter environment in a desperate search for food. The majority of the Breadbugs perished over the course of the winter, either from frostbite or starvation, and the few remaining Breadbugs, including Rye, Pita, and a few other unnamed Breadbugs, were forced to resort to cannibalizing their own warren members in order to survive the winter. When the spring finally arrived, only a few Breadbugs remained. While Pita was driven to complete apathy and dry nihilism by the experience, Rye instead became completely fixated on gathering the biggest hoard possible, to make sure nothing like what happened to her back in the warren could ever happen to her and her friends again. Due to Rye's fear of running out of supplies, she refuses to discard anything, even stale and rotting food, or ever eat from her own supply, fearing that even if she needs it then, she may "need it even more later" in another horrible starvation event.

Rye is also a workaholic and often pushes herself to a point of exhaustion gathering resources for her hoard. She has a low view of anyone she sees as "lazy", including Pita, and while Pita and Rye were brought to the Antarctic together and used to live in the same den in the Chilly Valley, Rye would at some point before the events of the game go on to kick Pita out of their den after he kept "loafing around" and eating from her supplies.

Rye is directly named after rye bread, a type of bread made from rye grain. Her full name is actually "Ryely", as she reveals in-game, which is a combination of "rye" and the name "Riley".

Although Rye and Pita originate from the same Breadbug warren, the two of them are not related, as the warren group was made up of several different Breadbug families. Both Rye and Pita are the only surviving members of their respective Breadbug lines.

Breadbugs appear in Pikmin: Attack of the Breadbugs, and drag objects to their dens. They have become a dominant species and their population on PNF-404 has grown significantly. Breadbugs are found scattered around the Land of Wonders, roaming freely in their new territory. A Breadbug without a den serves as the boss of the Beginner Territory as the first challenge. The Breadbug in the Beginner Territory is the only one that will refuse to drag objects. The Breadbug is also the only species to be found throughout the Land of Wonders, found throughout every territory. Captain Olimar can assist in carrying the corpses of Breadbugs.

The pesky Breadbug! Take out that rodent! – The ship, upon discovering the Breadbug

The Breadbug returns in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. Like most of its species, it resembles a roll of bread, as it has a tough, brown exterior. Its inner body, mainly its face, is of a peach coloration. It has a large snout with nostrils, and two glowing eyes with blue sclerae and black pupils. The Breadbug waddles around on two clawed stubby legs.

A Breadbug will appear from its green den at the start of the day or upon entering a sublevel. Dens that have yellow stripes have Crumbugs exit them, up to three at a time. When the Breadbug leaves its den, it will begin to wander around, followed by Crumbugs if any are near. The Breadbug will search for any treasures, but it can collect many other objects like pellets, corpses, or berries. When the Breadbug picks up an object, it will begin to drag it back to its den. Any Pikmin that are unable to lift the object will be dragged into the den with the Breadbug, perishing if they’re dragged inside. However, if the amount of Pikmin exceeds the weight of the treasure, then the Breadbug will be dragged along back to the ship or Onion, taking heavy damage upon hitting the hull after being sucked up. The hide of the Breadbug can also be damaged if a Pikmin is thrown on top of it.

Breadbugs can be a very massive nuisance. The best way to take them out is by winning the tug-of-war battle with them when they attempt to snag a treasure. Throwing Pikmin onto the hide will also deal damage, but not much; the best Pikmin type for the job is Wolf Pikmin, as they can latch onto the hide and deal constant damage. The Breadbug's den will disappear and release any collected objects when the Breadbug perishes.

In Overlord mode, the Breadbug moves much faster when carrying an object, like all Breadbugs.

Notes

  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #1: Breadbugs will try to steal your spoils for themselves! Use your Pikmin to drag them back to the Research Pod and do extreme damage!
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #2: Crumbugs will come out of Breadbugs' nests and follow their superior. Watch out; they will aid them in battle!
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #3: Certain Pikmin types have the ability to latch onto the Breadbug's thick hide and do damage to it.

Olimar's notes

More research into this creature's nest has yielded amazing results. When a Breadbug matures, it will build its own nest. The nest is a series of tunnels connected to various rooms. These rooms may contain food that the Breadbug scavenged. Other rooms contain Crumbugs in the early development stage, which they can not hunt for themselves. There is also a room which contains water for Breadbugs to drink. Breadbugs have been observed using small objects to bring drinking water to their nests, attributing to their high intelligence.

Louie's notes

The unfortunate reality of the Breadbug is that it holds no true purpose in the world of culinary delights. It may have a hearty amount of vitamins and nutrients, but it’s filled with fat, and it’s tasteless. It’s a shame, really. However, other subspecies, like Chocolate Breadbugs, hold more promise.

President’s notes

These small bread things seem to have a good nose for sniffing out loot! I might take one home and make it my own pet. Imagine taking it to the beach to sniff out GOLD! It’s like a natural metal detector!

Overlord's thoughts

I woke up after my afternoon nap to about seven hundred Breadbugs led by a giant leader carrying away my fridge. Why am I protecting these animals again?

In Pikmin: Shipwrecked Stargazers, Breadbugs are similar to their Pikmin 2 incarnation, complete with a burrow that they live in. However, they also have a newfound predator in the form of the Insecure Glimworm. This creature disguises itself as a Breadbug's burrow and lies in wait for one to come by and become its prey.

Notes

Olimar's notes

This curious creature has a morphology similar to a grub-dog, and many members of its family have adapted to mimicking actual grub-dogs as a defense mechanism. However, these particular specimens are merely opportunistic scavengers. They will steal objects they take a liking to, most of which are edible matter they wish to consume. While their hide protects them from most oppressive forces, the breadbug can still easily be preyed upon by many creatures, most notably a species of massive, fossorial worm that disguises itself as its burrow.

Louie's notes

Tragically bland and flavorless, there is really nothing you can do to salvage this creature's meat. You could try to put butter and jam on it or something like that, but even I found that absolutely disgusting when it actually came to eating the dish. A shame too, as it's just so nutritious.

Ship's comments

The biggest sleaze on this whole planet. It lures you in with its cuteness, then makes off with the stuff you need the most! Truly one of the most disgusting creatures I've ever had the displeasure of meeting!
